Stanford vs. UCLA 1979. John Elway and Vincent White provided most of the offense, but the game was tied three times. With six seconds left, Ken Naber attempted a 56 yard field goal. It hit the left upright a few inches above the cross bar, and toppled over for the win, 27-24. I can see the whole flight of that kick in my mind's eye as if I were still in my student seat in the old stadium.
That kick may have been less significant because the game was less significant than some of kicks mentioned earlier. But the kick itself was the most dramatic of them all, taking account of the distance, the hang time, the hit on the upright, and the fortunate fall.

Have we mentioned this one? Field goal was almost anti-climactic after the chaos of the previous minute, but it was the winning margin.

Pete Gogolak who paved the way for soccer style kickers in American Football played for the NFL Giants, in one game he attempted a field goal which was block, the ball rolled back toward where he was standing, at which point he kick the ball again, this time the ball travelled through the uprigths of the goal post for 3 points, when he kicked the ball the second time he used his opposite foot. I guess that makes him a Switch-Kicker (aka switch hitter), it was after this the nfl passed a rule that outlawed kicking the ball more than once on field goal and extra point attempts.

I was lucky enough to be in attendance for several of these FGs -- Naber's 1979 kick vs. UCLA, Hopkins' 1990 FG at Cal, and Ukropina's 2015 kick vs. Notre Dame. Great moments. not a Stanford FG but in 1980 I was at the Packers-Bears game at Lambeau Field. Chester Marcol comes in to kick a short FG in OT for the win. The snap and hold are good but then we hear the dreaded double thump of a blocked kick. The ball bounces back to Marcol and he scoops it up and runs around the left side for a 17 yard TD...the crowd went from dead silent on the block to great joy as he crossed the goal line...years later he wrote in his book that he was high on cocaine at the time..

There is a guy on the sidelines who turns his back and can't watch. Too many people on the sidelines anyway. Probably high rolling members of the booster club whose name I can't think of.

LOL, good catch! I don't know why one would deprive oneself of the chance to watch a game-winning field goal as time expired. Of course, even without watching, you would know what happened from the audio.
