Yeah, that was the most bizarre commercial I've ever seen. The end screen made it look like it was a technical error.

I guess our society has progressed to the point that we can enjoy a football game halftime show, taking place on a field on which the words "End Racism" are written in large letters at the back of the end zones, wherein women are objectified, the "N" word is heard repeatedly in song lyrics, gang banging and thuggery is glorified, and in the show's finale song the dancers are dressed in prison garb.
Over the past couple of years many sports organizations like the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA have pushed campaigns for equality, especially for women. How does this halftime show in this game, arguably the biggest sporting event of the year, speak to the effectiveness of those campaigns?

I mean hip hop and rap is not my cup of tea, but it is shocking that we’ve been through 55 Super Bowls in a game that features 57% of its players who are Black and never had a halftime show that featured hip hop.

Halftime show was awesome. Best part of game for sure.
I don't think there were any n-words and the songs they picked weren't particularly misogynistic, though certainly hip hop does have some of that. What hip hop acts would you have chosen martyup?

On the n-word, I would add that there is a tradition of groups appropriating insults. Think of the LGBTQ community adopting the word “queer”, which was an insult when I was growing up, or country music adopting “redneck”. Both of those are words that I wouldn’t direct at someone, but members of their respective communities are free to use it.

I am, actually, a big fan of hip hop and rap and have been since I was a kid in the 70s. I'm still bitter about the "Disco Sucks" campaign perpetrated by chumps who couldn't dance.

The game is being played in Inglewood, that's why they picked west coast hip hop acts for the halftime show.

It's just not that confusing why the NFL picked these acts. They're very popular, local, hit the nostalgia button for the age group that Super Bowl advertisers want.
