Be careful, this type of comment on a WBB thread may be brutally attacked. IMO neither Jenna or Jana would start at Stanford next season.
Except nobody was attacking anyone or doing anything other than giving their thoughts. I don't know, maybe kinda wait and see if anything is actually attacked before pissing on the board as likely to attack?
I am getting tired of this place. It is not what it used to be. I think I may stop posting. Doubt anyone will miss me. See you all next year, maybe.
I hear you. I've been worried about this too, and trying to put a finger on it.
Our culture in general has become harsher, and some people--good people--react by asserting themselves and fight fire with fire. Other people--good people--react by seeking out small communities of positive, like-minded individuals to preserve an element of community.
Like you, I am in the second group. In my "real life" I face the ugly reality of many negative trends in the world--a lot of you who think I am a goodie two-shoes from the Cardboard would not believe I am the same person in other walks of life. When I log into the Cardboard I am looking, if I am honest, for some escapism. I want a positive atmosphere and I want to hang out with positive people. Truth be told, I actually hate a lot of college sports which I know from personal experience often corrupt the basic educational mission of many universities--and all for entertainment value. But Stanford in general and Tara Vanderveer in particular are the great exceptions that prove the rule. I can be a fan here because Stanford has attempted to show the nation how college athletics
should be done--emphasizing values like academic standards, keeping the corruption of money away from the students, and hiring coaches who embody not only athletic excellence but also serve as role models for ethics, justice, and leadership.
But lately I feel my escapist window is closing. It is as if Sauron won the war and Hobbiton is surrounded by orcs. What are we, on a public board like this, to do? Do we lay out a banquet and try to enjoy our last days in Hobbiton to the fullest? Or do we spend all our time discussing the Orcs--their number, kind, and the many possible ways they might kill us?
