JUMP was superb from beyond the arc,
hitting 8/15 to tie her game record
for most 3-pointer made.
Kind of frustrated with Haley JONES.
She is obviously struggling with her outside shooting.
She was very open twice from 3-point range
and midrange, but hesitated, stalled then decided to pass.

Jump had some very nice moments on defense too. She was very quick tonight. I'm impressed with how she keeps improving every year.

I love that Tara gives meaningful minutes to the bench players but I wanted to see more minutes from the starters because, like tonight, there was some sloppy sequences and the more time they play together on the court the better the negatives will sort themselves out. Especially before the biggest non conference game of the season coming up.

The record for three point shots made in one game for Stanford is 9, held by Yamasaki and Goodenbour--wish Tara had left Jump in so she could get one more. Jump has hit 8 once before, as did Bonnie Samuelson, Wiggins, and Yamasaki. It was wonderful to see Jump having one of her best games--many fans started to give her standing ovations as the treys mounted up in number.
Cal Poly SLO acquitted itself quite well tonight. I think it was a reasonable goal for us to hit 100 again, and a reasonable goal for us to hold them under 40, and we failed on both counts. SLO was able to slow the game down and we were not able to push the pace the way we have in prior games--get ready for a LOT more of that on Sunday.
But it is our defense that is beginning to concern me. I so appreciated Katy confirming our observation that we are doing a lot more switching on defense. But there were times when Cal Poly SLO made our defense look a bit chaotic--when we would have two players going after one of their defenders and leaving someone else open. As a direct result, SLO got some wide open shots from three point range and hit a whopping 43% of them. That will not do on Sunday.
My concerns about Jones continue. Is it too early to call it a slump? She hit only one basket tonight, and what was worse, when she had open looks she seemed indecisive about taking them, as if she has lost some confidence in her shot. Well, in the past, I have noted that she seems to play up or down to the level of her competition. Let's hope that she plays up to the competition on Sunday.
Lepolo has come back down to earth--three assists and three turnovers today. There was one particularly egregious miss which caused Tara to pull her, when she fired a bullet pass in to an open player in the post but sent it way too high. I almost had concluded that she could not make mistakes. Still, sitting at courtside and watching her I was impressed with how strong she is for her size. She is physically quite mature and should be able to bang away with any other players in her height range.
I got the impression that if we played Betts for 40 minutes and required that every possession she had to touch the ball at least once--we would indeed have scored 100. But there was no point in dominating this scrappy little team by height alone--we knew we could do that--but could we defeat them without completely selling out to the gross physical differences between the teams? Frankly, I am not sure. I suspect that we could not win by scheme alone--that most of our advantage was physical. That worries me a bit since the other team will sometimes be our equal, physically.
Demetre had an uncharacteristic bad shooting day. Brink and Iriafen both looked great during limited minutes. Papadaki got the briefest of playing time but made the most of it with an aggressive basket.

If you want to watch it, a replay is scheduled on PAC-12 Mountain at 7:30AM Thursday. Considering the result, maybe we all should watch.
Yes, the game was played at altitude.
Utah pulled down a dominant 85.4% of rebounds under the OU basket and a impressive 39% of rebounds under their own basket. (For comparison, Stanford was 75% and 55% tonight.) As a result, Utah had 18 more FGA.
Their 55% shooting overall helped bury the Sooners. Utah scored 13 3-ptrs (3 more than Stanford tonight) with 32.5% shooting while OU was 3 of 16. Three players had 20+ points. Three more had 10+ points.
OU had 15 turnovers (not good, but not the cause of the discrepancy).
If I read it right, OU starters were 6'3", 6'0", 6'0", 6'0", 5'3".
Utah started 6'2", 6'2", 5'11", 5'10", 5'6". The difference in rebounding must be due to hustle and blocking out.
Good game for PAC-12's Net rankings. Good to get a heads-up on Utah's potential this early.

I was generally disappointed in Stanford's play tonight.
For one thing, we showed we are vulnerable to 3s. Until 0.1 seconds left in the first half, CP SLO had scored one 2 pointer and four 3 pointers. CP SLO wound up with 9 threes on 21 attempts (42.9%) while 6 of 29 two-pointers. (Although Stanford wound up with a lower 3PT%, we were (barely) ahead when Jump was pulled.) CP SLO spread their 3-pt attempts around (4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1 attempts by different players), which meant we couldn't really shut down one.
The CP SLO coach was the most active I've seen, constantly coaching & positioning his players. Good for him. I'm sure they learned a lot tonight. I thought they played with a lot of effort and disrupted us more than I would have thought. I wish them luck in their conference.
I think Tara pulled Jump because the team had quit playing what they were supposed to work on, and were just feeding Jump.
3Q 7:40 Brink missed 3pt (IIRC, shot clock was running low and we couldn't get the ball inside)
5:21 Jump 3pt
4:11 Jump missed 3pt
4:05 Jump 3pt
3:36 Jump 3pt
2:53 Jump 3pt
2:37 Jump subbed out
That's about as fair and as useful as if we'd been feeding Betts for 5 straight shots. No, it was less useful (Betts needs more reps.)
I saw one thing of concern that may be a side-effect of our playing much weaker teams: lazy passes. This has been a problem for Stanford before that bites them when they play elite teams. I want to watch the game again and see if I focused on a few weak passes or whether it was pervasive.

Sloppy game with some not so great defending of their three point shooters. Fifth game in a short time, not a great game, sort of the lull before the storm on Sunday. Jones did seem a bit off. She passed up wide open threes and some other shots, as was mentioned above. Cal Poly did a good job getting back on defense to stop our breaks. They also swarmed our bigs pretty well so people missed but were so much taller they just got the O board and scored. Played everyone with big minutes for the bench. Eh, ugly game with the offense looking meh compared to the previous games. Is it a worry? Doubt it matters, may in fact give Tara a good excuse to pound home some important points ahead of S. Car.

I would characterize it differently. It isn't that we were laying off of their 3-point shooters and didn't get out to them in time. CP SLO used a lot of motion and screens, dragging our defenders toward the lane, impeding their ability to get back out to the 3pt line, and then passing the ball around to get it to an open player on the 3-pt line. And, as I say above, "their three point shooters" were 10 players. I credit CP SLO more than I'd say it was Stanford's players at fault.

Observations:
Jump seems to have become our most consistent and stable player, that started last year and continues even more so this year; no wonder Tara gives her the most minutes. Only question is; people reported that in practices Hannan was doing a fair amount of driving and pull up mid range jumpers. Don't think I have seen one yet in games, maybe one.
Jump shot a hair better than 53% from 3 tonight - and her year to date 3 pt % dropped - she was shooting 63% coming into the game!
Assuming So. Carolina is as physical, quick, and pressuring at UConn and Texas. If so, how we are playing now is going to cut it. We rely too much on passes and with the ball pressure and overall pressure, it's a recoipe for mega TOs against teams like those three - and they are also great at turning them into quick fast break points. We need Lepolo, Jones, Nivar, and Nnopu to drive and penetrate and as needed, kick out.
Speaking of Jones, she MUST take those 3 shots! Especially in these games against weaker opponents where a miss isn't going to be disasterous. She has to get that shot and he confidence developed. Otherwise teams will just lay off her.
When Betts is in there, I notice that the rest of our players don't do much. The guard or wing who has the ball just looks to throw the ball into the post ans let Betts go for a shot. That works agst. weeaker opponents but won't be so good agst. top teams with realy good centers/posts. Can't be so predictable and think that we can always squeeze in a pass to Betts. And yes, Betts should not always put down a dribble.
Against So. Carolina, we may have an advantage in that they aren't a great 3pt shooting team and from what I can see in stats, they rely a lot om post play. So with our posts, we should able to make it difficult on SC if we play hard and smart.
My metric for the team to be playing good is for them to score 20 each quarter. We didn't do that this game in the 2nd and 4th and almost didn't average 20 per Q for the entire game.

I sat right behind the visiting team bench so heard all of the huddles and the in game talking amongst the coaches. It was interesting how often the Cal Poly coach complained that her team was gassed and not in good enough shape to run hard in transition. I think their team did a pretty good job of running hard on defense to prevent transition opportunities for us. But this also resulted in them not having the energy to run hard on offense. Something to keep an eye out for with other opponents. If we are pushing the pace on offense and the opposing team sprints back and we don’t get a layup, are we still benefiting by decreasing the chances of running/transition against us? Our defense has been pretty great this year. In our 5 games this year, no team has scored more than 50 points. Last year we held only 2 of 12 non conference opponents under 50 (but they were better teams in general last year than we have faced thus far).

Some very good points by everyone above.
I think Haley will be all right. I think she is still trying to be a pass-first PG. Unfortunately that mindset deprives us of a lot of her slash and pull-up game, as well as the open 3. With our bigs, she should shoot more and trust that our rebounding will clean things up sufficiently. She does have a knack for being in the right place and coming up with key rebounds and loose balls.
I did not think Cam had that good a game. SLO clogged the paint and she seemed to be finding it hard to move in there. I had the sound off for a while but it looked like that was her with that totally silly foul with 0.1 secs left in the half.
Bosgana is a pretty opportunistic player but her 3 was not falling. I think she has a lot of upside.
I think starting Lepolo is absolutely the right move by Tara.
2Q and 4Q were pretty ugly. Our shooting %tage must have been abysmal during those stretches. Some bad TO's too. Even that 21-0 run could have been 26 or 27 with better play. When our shooting is off -- and there will be games when that is true -- we absolutely cannot afford TO's.
I don't think we're quite where we want to be yet, but let's see how things get worked out by March, when it really counts. Need some more killer instinct when the competition is this (relatively low) level -- it would carry over into the fights with the UConns and such.

I agree that Stanford didn't have its best game last night. Gave up too many 3's and didn't score as easily as in some of the other mismatch games. Also, Haley's shot is still not there yet. It goes without saying that if the team plays poorly against the #1 ranked team, they will lose.
But I don't think there is great cause for concern about this team because I think they will keep getting better. I also don't think that if we lose on Sunday it is the end of the world. I am interested in seeing how Haley does if she gets more minutes. It has always seemed like she does better in the second half after she gets her rhythm going and I don't think she has had much opportunity or need for that yet this year. But I don't want to see just our starters (or main 7-8 players) get all the time. I think our backups need to get some real time against an elite opponent on the big stage. That is just as important. I want us to be great at tournament time and Sunday is more of a development opportunity that I don't think Tara will waste. I want us to beat S. Carolina and will be there early and cheering the team on and hanging on every possession. I just think we all need to remember that it is early and there will likely be more bumps along the road toward a deep run in March that hopefully ends with us winning our last game.
Cheers,
Pete F.

I had a different take here. CalPoly was consistently doubling and sometimes even trippling when the ball got down to the post. I imagine kicking the ball out to the shooter is exactly what Tara wants in those situations - at least it is what I would tell a team to do :).

At the chalk talk Steding was asked about the offense and defense, and both are somewhat new, as we here have noticed. Not much of the Princeton offense is left. That means there will almost certainly be a few growing pains while the team perfects the new stuff and also that there will be continued tweaks and line-up tests. I think it bodes well that the offense has looked so good for the most part, albeit against generally weaker competition, when it is at least somewhat new this season. Same for the defense. Everything should look much better as the season rolls on.
I am not worried about S. Carolina, in that I don't see a negative. Winning would be fantastic but losing is also very useful, especially with a revamped offense. They can see what worked well against an elite team and what may need work.
