Does kal even have better housing than Stanford?  Maybe just for football players?

That was my first reaction.  I never thought Cal was all that well known for its luxurious housing.  It is entirely possible that moving from Tennessee to Stanford was a very big step down in terms of housing, and that the grass was not as green at Stanford as he expected.

Was on Alabama's campus for the first time in years over the holidays. Many student housing facilities and the greek system have been substantially updated, and in many instances, completely rebuilt. They are stunning, at least from the outside. A quick perusal of what's offered for athletes is pretty amazing. I'd imagine Tennessee is close to that level. Stanford, I think, has significantly upgraded housing since I was last there in the early 80's, and imaging many are very nice, too. Who knows how close to the level for SEC athletes, though.

That said, do we really want an athlete to whom his or her living facilities are a key factor?

My guess is that family issues, being home sick, or personal entanglements are the main cause. I'm pretty sure you can force a room change, at least back in the day.

IOW, it seems he was admitted conditionally and had to meet a certain GPA to be fully accepted, and when he didn't his admission was denied.

Yes, Stanford's Football program announced the transfer (giving reason to believe all was on track), but this is the first time such a transfer was allowed, and also - and I think importantly - with a brand new Head Football Coach with no Stanford experience in charge.

I never bought the dorm reason was why he decide to end up in Berkeley. So I went back to why so many other committed recruits have suddenly dropped Stanford. I asked someone in the know, and this is what I was told. Makes the most sense of any reason. No committed recruit ever comes out and says "I was denied Stanford admission." Why would a transfer like JWT be any different?

Y'all can discuss the implications of admissions blowing up a transfer, but I think admissions is responsible for JWT not enrolling at Stanford.  I do find it curious he ended up at Cal given Cal has more RB depth than Stanford. Maybe he just wants to play for a school that values academics more than winning football games.

As someone who was a mid-year undergrad transfer and graduate school transfer, I can certainly relate to the challenges of fitting in to a new campus when everyone has already had a chance to meet and develop relationships. And I don't remember roommate change requests being denied, because when things get to that point, the request probably has merit. 

Changing schools because of a living situation just is not a believable reason to me, or the person who told me about the grade release timing. You don't base your decision to be at a school on with whom or where you are living. You just don't. You make it based on the school, campus, the program you are in, the teachers (coaches). You don't decide to transfer somewhere, then pick another school because you don't like your living situation.
