Down by 9 with 33 seconds left in regulation at home agains the Knicks - who oddly enough had won 9 straight years in Dallas - the Mavs went on to tie game off an intentionally missed free throw and put back by Doncic, with 1 sec left, and won in OT. Crazy - why sports are so compelling. You just never know what is gonna happen or when you will see something that never has before.
Oh by the way, Doncic had 60 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists - first time anyone has had 60-20-10 in an NBA game.

Had very good seats at the Warriors game last night. They barely beat a thoroughly outclassed Charlotte team. At one point, they were ahead by 17, and they should have won by 30. Their shooting went ice cold. They got sloppy and lackadaisacal and Charlotte took advantage of it.
Came to some conclusions on their 2020 and 2021 first round draft picks:
1) James Wiseman. The NBA game is way too fast for him right now. He does well in certain ways, but fails in most obvious basic ways. He's out of position far more often than not. He's slow to everything; slow to block out, slow to defend, slow to switch on defense, slow to set screens, and when he does those activities, he's far weaker than typical NBA players. His screens are twice as far away as they should be, he takes the wrong angle and he's slow to penetrate. He looks like exactly what he is: a tremendous, borderline amazing athlete who's seven feet tall, and at least three and probably more like five years away from reaching his potential, thanks to his lack of competitive basketball over the past three years. At the same time, his defense is improving, which is a good sign.
2. Moses Moody. Exactly as advertised. High floor, low ceiling. Competent and capable, starter on a not-so-good NBA team, decent backup on a very good NBA team. Not quite as athletic, not quite as strong, not quite as quick as the other young players, but definitely a better basketball player. Needs to put on weight and strength. IMHO, would benefit tremendously from G league experience, or anywhere he could play 30 minutes a night.
3. Jonathan Kuminga. He's a find. It's starting to click. He's starting to understand what he can do and what he can't do, and he's refraining from the weaker parts of his game. He's learning how to play with others, figuring out the system and just as importantly, figuring out what he can add to the system that the Warriors don't have. Fun and very exciting to watch. If Kuminga and Poole learn defense the way that Draymond Green and Klay Thompson did, then this Warriors team won't miss a beat.

I'm not sure the Warriors' youth movement will have a chance to reach its potential. The Warriors' luxury tax situation is the elephant in the room, and I doubt ownership will want to pay 500MM in salary + tax next year given the team's results this year. A salary dump at the deadline or in the offseason seems very plausible to me.
When I registered here in 2014, TrumpCard seemed like an apolitical user ID...
I'm not sure the Warriors' youth movement will have a chance to reach its potential. The Warriors' luxury tax situation is the elephant in the room, and I doubt ownership will want to pay 500MM in salary + tax next year given the team's results this year. A salary dump at the deadline or in the offseason seems very plausible to me.

Maybe just dump Poole at the deadline to a contender willing to assume his long term salary obligation. Appease Draymond and avoid a big chunk of tax next year without giving up a starter or breaking up the “core.” Since Poole is still on his rookie deal, the Warriors would not need to take much salary in return. After one more season, Draymond and Klay could re-sign for closer to market comp to close out their careers with Curry. The team wouldn’t be likely to contend again soon, but it wouldn’t break the bank and it would be a fun team to watch fight for a playoff spot. Last year was lightening in a bottle. Another title was too much to ask.

Something is happening (in a good way) for this Warriors team now. I had to do a double take when I saw Wiseman, Moody, and Kuminga all on the floor together at the same time against Memphis. They actually held their own.
Wiseman is definitely not polished, but it is clear he is starting to be playable in spurts. Before going to Santa Cruz, he was unplayable. Obviously you want more, faster from the #2 pick three years ago, but I'd rather be James Wiseman than Trey Lance right now, who's career paths are eerily similar.
Kuminga is a player for sure. The thing I like most about him is he is totally fine playing team basketball and being a cog in the machine. He knows he's not expected to be a primary scorer, and he loves playing defense. He passes well, runs the floor well, can get his own shot a little bit, and he's starting to gain confidence that he is an NBA rotation player now.
Moody is solid and does what is asked of him, without the ability to make plays based on sheer athletic talent like Kuminga. He'll likely never be a starter, but a solid rotation player the coaches trust. Maybe a better version of Damion Lee?
The win against Utah, without Curry, Thompson, and Wiggins showed a lot, especially the fact they held Utah to 13 4th quarter points. Can they get the confidence to perform on the road this year? That's what the season is all about now. The Curry injury might turn out to be good for the team, much like it was good for them to play without Thompson and Green last year, because the younger guys are not able to be carried by the vets and are being forced to figure things out. Might be seeing Steve Kerr's greatest coaching job ever this year if the team starts moving up the standings.

So the Warriors compiled a 7-6 record in January and stand at 26-24 on the season. Not exactly inspiring, but with the parity we're seeing in the Western Conference, that record is good for 5th place right now. A lot of guys have missed games, but the team seems healthy for now. Curry, Thompson, Wiggins, D. Green, Poole, Looney, DeVincenzo, and Kuminga seem pretty well entrenched in the rotation. After those 8 players, however, this team has some question marks, and I'm not sure that an 8-man rotation with this many old and often-injured players will be viable.
Wiseman has played 0 minutes for the Warriors since the post above, including a few healthy DNPs over the last week.
Moody had repeatedly logged single digit minutes on a depleted roster, spent time in the G-League, and logged a healthy DNP upon his return.
Baldwin is just a rookie and hasn't shown close to enough yet to be part of the rotation for a contender.
Igoudala has played only 3 games all year and is injured yet again.
J. Green has played 3 games this month. Like Wiseman, some DNPs were due to injury, but he had 2 healthy DNPs in the last 4 games.
That leaves the question of what to do with the 2-way players.
They can't play in more than 50 regular season games and can't play in the playoffs.
Lamb and Jerome have been useful at times, but the team would have to make a rotation spot available to promote them to the regular rotation.
What's Lacob's next move? Anything coming up at the trade deadline?

That's what the season is all about now. The Curry injury might turn out to be good for the team, much like it was good for them to play without Thompson and Green last year, because the younger guys are not able to be carried by the vets and are being forced to figure things out. Might be seeing Steve Kerr's greatest coaching job ever this year if the team starts moving up the standings.
So the Warriors compiled a 7-6 record in January and stand at 26-24 on the season. Not exactly inspiring, but with the parity we're seeing in the Western Conference, that record is good for 5th place right now. A lot of guys have missed games, but the team seems healthy for now. Curry, Thompson, Wiggins, D. Green, Poole, Looney, DeVincenzo, and Kuminga seem pretty well entrenched in the rotation. After those 8 players, however, this team has some question marks, and I'm not sure that an 8-man rotation with this many old and often-injured players will be viable.
Wiseman has played 0 minutes for the Warriors since the post above, including a few healthy DNPs over the last week.
Moody had repeatedly logged single digit minutes on a depleted roster, spent time in the G-League, and logged a healthy DNP upon his return.
Baldwin is just a rookie and hasn't shown close to enough yet to be part of the rotation for a contender.
Igoudala has played only 3 games all year and is injured yet again.
J. Green has played 3 games this month. Like Wiseman, some DNPs were due to injury, but he had 2 healthy DNPs in the last 4 games.
That leaves the question of what to do with the 2-way players.

There are only 4 truly awful teams in the NBA, San Antonio & Houston in the West, Charlotte & Detroit in the East. Everyone else is within 4 games of the 10th spot for ply-in or better, and the Lakers are only 3 GB from 6th (no play-in needed to make playoffs). A 4th place team can now go on a 5-game losing streak and be in lottery, with just 30 games left in the season. Crazy. Ask the Pelicans about this...

So the W's go from #5 to #9 in two days after dropping a very winnable game in Minnesota and a game they had no chance in Denver.
It appears I was wrong about the Lakers, so wrong that I am now inclined to believe the Lakers - after the savvy Rui Hachimura trade the W's needed - will finish ahead of the Warriors in the standings. The Warriors are just plain mediocre and not getting better. They consistently lose close games (their OT record over the last several years is something like 2-17), blow leads, and have shown me nothing to warrant belief that they will some how be anything much more than 15-15 the rest of the way. I'm not even sure they will make the play-in tournament, as they are only .5 ahead of Portland and 1.5 ahead of LAL, both playing better than the W's recently.

What we are seeing with the Warriors is how little the regular season matters. There is no great team in the West. Make the playoffs, hopefully stay out of the play-in, with Curry, Thompson, Dray as fresh as possible. From that point anything can happen.

I think the Warriors could go deep in the playoffs, but they would need the following:
1) Learn to play on the road. They average 4 fewer rebounds, two fewer assists and 2.5 more turnovers on the road.
2) Learn to play defense, especially on the road where they give up 123.1 ppg.
3) Good health. Rest as much as they can in-season, avoid the play-in series.
4) Stop turning the ball over. GSW is #2 in the league. Jordan Poole is 4th in the league in TO's, btw.
5) Stop fouling. GSW is #2 in the league, but only #17 in steals and #27 in most blocks. Yikes.
6) Keep passing. GSW is #1 in assists. Don't devolve into run and gun.

Heard Bob Meyers talk about how this NBA trade deadline there are not that many sellers because only like 4-5 teams are totally out of it. This may be true, but that doesn't mean teams thinking they can contend can't try to improve themselves by trading their actual NBA players for others, not just future draft assets. One team may have too may front court players but not enough backcourt depth, and trade with a team with the opposite problem, in a win-win trade.
The Kyrie Irving trade request sure threw a wrench in the gears of the Brooklyn Nets. I wonder if any ripple effect from that could result in a shock Kevin Durant trade. The bummer for the Warriors is they can't trade Andrew Wiggins to the Nets - who would need to be included - because due to some arcane NBA rule, he and Ben Simmons can't be on the same team due to their contract status.
The Warriors are a mess right now and in a a very awkward spot with Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and James Wiseman. Worse for them, they don't own their 2024 first round pick, so can't trade their 2023 first round pick or their 2025 first round pick due to NBA rule that says you can't trade your first round picks in consecutive years. They could do a pick swap, to gain some flexibility, but for the most part, they are stuck, with no way to improve the team other than through free agent exceptions and draft. Wiseman, Moody, and Kuminga were suppose to be the guys to provide that improvement but it hasn't happened.
Jakob Poeltl would be a perfect fit for the W's, providing rebounding and paint scoring the W's lack, but San Antonio reportedly isn't interested in anything the W's can offer. It looks like Jarred Vanderbilt a long 2-way wing from Jazz averaging 8 reb/game could be had, and just read about 6-5 Matisse Thybulle, more of a pure defensive specialist from Sixers, is available too. Both Vanderbilt and Thybulle could be swapped for Moses Moody straight up, but might take a draft pick or draft swap to get especially Vanderbilt.
I am of the belief the Warriors must make a move to bolster the defense to be a legit playoff contender. All three of these guys would do this.

Definitely agree with you with respect to the lack of defense. Warriors defensive rating was #1 last year, is currently 27th. Their offensive rating is #2. Offense is more expensive than defense, but overemphasis on offense is like bacon: smells great, tastes better and will kill you in the long run.
The Warriors are down to some hard choices, which I think need to be made:
1) Warriors need to trade Wiseman. He is an injury machine, and his lack of play for years really shows. His instincts are all very late -- he's late on defense, late on offense, late on transition, late on everything. I think he'll develop, but not for another three years...he needs to get a lot of playing time on a very bad team. He'll be a good player in 2026, but not for the Warriors. His salary cap hit this year is $9.6 million. Next year it's $12.1 million. Too expensive
2) Hopefully, Draymond will not exercise his player option. His play has really declined in recent years, as has his conditioning. Maybe he can get a three or four year contract from the Lakers or some other team, but his contract is an albatross. His salary cap hit is $27.6 million next year.
3) Klay's salary cap hit is $43 million. I know there's no realistic way of trading Klay. Klay used to be the best two-way player in the league. After two years of injuries, he's a very ordinary defender -- at best. Unfortunately, there's no way to get rid of him.
4) Wiggins is a comparative bargain. Keep him.
5) Hate to say it, but I think Poole needs to go. In exchange for his occasional amazing offensive play, almost everything else about him is negative. He doesn't work hard on defense. He's a bit fragile. He's a turnover machine. He's more likely to shoot than pass (this is where his admiration for Steph Curry isn't doing him any favors, he's acting like the worst of Steph at times). I can see why Draymond doesn't like him -- he's the definition of the player that the Warriors don't want and try to avoid. I know he's young, and I'm sure they hope he will mature and turn the ball over less and pass more and exert more effort on defense. We'll see.
6) I really, really hope they keep DiVincenzo. He's the anti-Poole. Not as gifted athletically, but does everything else right. He gets about 50% more steals, turns the ball over 50% less, plays hard defense (though is overmatched at times). And his 3pt shooting percentage (39.9%) is much better than Poole's (32.4%), and about the same as Wiggins (39.7%) and Klay's (39.2%). He gets more rebounds per minute than anyone on the team except Looney, Draymond and Steph. Outside of the starters, DiVincenzo has the best +/- on the team.
7) I'd like to see more of Patrick Baldwin, Jr. He's soft, but he's inexpensive and young. I think he's hungry. Maybe he needs a year in the G league.

Definitely agree with you with respect to the lack of defense. Warriors defensive rating was #1 last year, is currently 27th. Their offensive rating is #2. Offense is more expensive than defense, but overemphasis on offense is like bacon: smells great, tastes better and will kill you in the long run.
The Warriors are down to some hard choices, which I think need to be made:
1) Warriors need to trade Wiseman. He is an injury machine, and his lack of play for years really shows. His instincts are all very late -- he's late on defense, late on offense, late on transition, late on everything. I think he'll develop, but not for another three years...he needs to get a lot of playing time on a very bad team. He'll be a good player in 2026, but not for the Warriors. His salary cap hit this year is $9.6 million. Next year it's $12.1 million. Too expensive
2) Hopefully, Draymond will not exercise his player option. His play has really declined in recent years, as has his conditioning. Maybe he can get a three or four year contract from the Lakers or some other team, but his contract is an albatross. His salary cap hit is $27.6 million next year.
3) Klay's salary cap hit is $43 million. I know there's no realistic way of trading Klay. Klay used to be the best two-way player in the league. After two years of injuries, he's a very ordinary defender -- at best. Unfortunately, there's no way to get rid of him.

Why would the Nets trade a first team all-NBA player in return for that package? A team can't contend without a star (or two), and these proposed trades would leave the Nets star-less. If the Nets are going to blow up the team and give up on contending, they should do it the right way, like OKC is doing, not by taking a role player in or past his prime like Wiggins or Dray.
