Exactly. If you wonder why football is losing boatloads of money...look no further
Football is losing money because those folks weren't doing their job. . . .
Precisely. Every football staff in the country is this big (or bigger). Naive to say "this is why we're losing money." We're losing money because the team has been dogshit, nobody shows up to games, and Larry Scott screwed the conference on TV rights.
How did Larry Scott screw the conference on TV rights? Not that long ago people were singing the praises of the new guy in charge. To me, it looks like he's not going to have any more luck spinning the Pac whatever's media rights straw into gold than Scott did.
If Scott was meeting with SMU and SDSU, people would have been apoplectic. Would Larry Scott have allowed USC and UCLA to bolt under his watch? Or might he have been more proactive about keeping them in the fold?
It seems possible Kliavkoff was caught with his pants down vis-a-vis the Big Ten taking the most valuable properties in the conference over which he is in charge.
Anyway, I don't think the Pac whatever would have fared any better with Roy Kramer in charge. There are too many factors working against the Pac whatever for any particular commissioner to have staved off its slow death. Two of them are Cal and Stanford being oblivious and seemingly unconcerned about the value of their media rights being destroyed by institutional indifference to football.
