Stanford scores 3 in the 8th to win 7-4 and get the sweep. Owen Cobb drove in 2 runs in the 8th with a triple, then scored on a sac fly. For the day, Cobb went 6 for 9, with a double and a triple, scored twice and had 4 RBIs. Not sure what the plan was for Haskins prior to his illness, but Cobb is really taking advantage of his opportunity.

Haskins seems like a big-time talent so I'm guessing that Troy moves to center field when Haskins returns. But, who knows.

Haskins seems like a big-time talent so I'm guessing that Troy moves to center field when Haskins returns. But, who knows.

Obviously a nice weekend for the team after starting off 2-2; though it remains to be seen if Rice will be a decent team or not.
Some things I like:
- I always have a soft spot in my heart for guys who have been in the program for a while who finally break through. There seem to be two of those so far.
Anybody surprised Cobb was starting hasn't been paying attention. Since the end of last season Esquer has been talking about Cobb as a likely starter in the middle infield. Cobb got a chance to grab a starting spot in each of the past three seasons, but his bat never came around. Now it has.
Past 3 seasons - 0.170 BA, 0.481 OPS, 9 hits (3 doubles) in 59 plate appearances. [13 starts]
This year - 0.500 BA, 1.298 OPS, 15 hits (1 double, 2 triples, 1 homer) in 32 plate appearances. [7 starts]
Alberto Rios (Junior) has been buried in the depth chart at catcher. I think before this year he was best known for an exuberant celebration in the bullpen as somebody hit a dramatic (extra innings?) home run to cap a big comeback [unfortunately I forget the game - perhaps somebody here remembers?]. But Esquer said he had a great fall and seems to be moving in to the starting left field position in order to get his bat in the lineup.
Past 2 seasons - 0.000 BA, 0.125 OPS, 0 hits on 8 plate appearances.
This year - 0.409 BA, 1.064 OPS, 9 hits (3 doubles) in 27 plate appearances. [5 starts]
If Trevor Haskins does manage to claim a starting spot when he returns, it would be presumably at the expense of one of these two - though right now they have the top two BA on the team, and two of the top four OPS.
- Matt Scott - Frosh RH pitcher. Was drafted by the Rangers.
He's made three appearances. Did give up 3 walks in his first outing, since then only one bloop hit.
0.00 ERA. 5.2 innings pitched. 1 save. 1 hit allowed. 3 walks allowed. 3 appearances.
Some things I don't like (so far):
Worried about the start for Carter Graham. He's in a notable slump.
0.077 BA (only two hits so far, 1 HR 1 double), 0.496 OPS.
For a guy who last year led the Pac 12 in HRs and hit 0.331.
Ryan Bruno. Finished the year as the closer and/or setup guy. Was critical during the tournament.
So far. 18.00 ERA, 4.50 WHIP, leads team in walks with 7 despite only pitching 2.0 innings in 3 appearances.
Would like to see O'Rourke and Haskins back.

Anyone know why O'Rourke hasn't played? Hurt, illness or other? Coach raved about him at Pac-12 media day.

I thought last year that Graham finished off his great season with a fantastic game in the prelims (I think). After that game, he was swinging for the fences almost every at bat. He became increasingly frustrated... and then the season ended. Is he still going for the HR?

Well, we beat Pacific 15-5. Troy wound up 4/6 with a double and a triple, but a home run short of the cycle. Moore wound up going 5/5 and was a triple short of the cycle, with three doubles and a home run. Montgomery did his best Ohtani impersonation, going 2/4 with a pair of home runs and then pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief (giving up a run).

7-1 victory--quality start (6.2IP, 0 ER) for Mathews although he threw 117 pitches, followed by Pancer and Lopez (a shaky bases-loaded ninth). Good to see Carter go 2 for 3 with a HR and 3 RBI. Bowser also had a no-doubter 2-run bomb.

Lopez appears to be another nice story of a guy in the program for many years suddenly emerging as a contributor. He's a fifth year player (listed as a grad student).
Over his first four years he pitched 12 innings total with and ERA of 9.75.
This year he has pitched 7.0 innings with an ERA of 0.00.
Now, yesterday in the ninth he doubled his season totals for hits, walks and hit batters (he had one of each in the ninth, now has two of each on the season), but he got out of it.
His stuff isn't great from what I can see on the iffy feeds I've been watching, but he's a big lefty with a side/under delivery so the ball comes in with a very different look. That should be good as a change of pace all season if he can stay around the strike zone.
