Upsets lost: 8 seed USC lost to 9 seed South Dakota State in OT (SD State had a similar NET ranking to USC, 34 vs USC's 31 so not a big upset)
Upsets won: 0 (no lower-seed matchups)
Notes: 1) Stanford wins by 43 without Brink, 2) Utah scores over 100 and Pili has a career high 33 points AND a career high 8 assists, and 3) Arizona easily defeats the Big 12's #5 team and Kate Reese goes off for 25 points. Would've been nice if USC had won, but the teams did about as I expected on the first day. Not much respect for the Pac 12 at ESPN though. Their pundants didn't even mention Stanford at all in their day 1 wrap up article and then went on to predict both 5-seeds Washington State and 6-seed Colorado will lose today: ESPN Wrap - Day 1 We'll see.

USC lost to a smaller conference team. WSU, our conference tournament winner, lost to a much lower seeded team from a smaller conference team. Not a good look for the conference. I am on record speculating that the conference is deep with a lot of good teams but is weak in the top half. If CO loses or struggles, well, that would confirm that suspicion. I hope my suspicion is wrong.

Colorado crushed Middle Tennessee, although the final margin shrank to 82-60 after they went on cruise control.

Well, Colorado just destroyed Middle Tennessee, a team from a small conference which has some good wins (Louisville) and a high NET rating (28). It's hard to extrapolate the strength of a conference from the first round. Seeing which teams win two games and get to the Sweet Sixteen will be a better gauge.

UCLA is taking care of business over poor Sacramento State. Kiki Rice is picking up where she left off against us. The first time we saw her, she did not seem to be living up to her hype. She now looks awesome. It is going to be hard playing against her for years to come. Well, at least one year to come. Then she can enjoy jetting east to play in Iowa City and Champaign.
I also watched a bit of Texas demolishing its hapless foe. Strange to see Shaylee Gonzalez and Taylor Jones playing for them. And Rori Harmon seems entirely back from her earlier injury. I think I'm cheering for Louisville to beat Texas.

The real test is how things go tomorrow and Monday, how many get into the sweet sixteen. I hope it's all 5 that are playing in the 2nd round!

(On the other hand, they could do us a favor and knock Duke and Iowa out of the tournament, assuming we get by Ole Miss and Texas--a big assumption.) I liked Arizona when they played us for a national championship, and respected Adia Barnes. But then she seemingly weeded out her players (7 players transferred out) and I found that disturbing. So I am not very enthused about any of the remaining Pac XX schools other than ourselves, and possibly Utah. I would have gladly cheered for WSU.
