Things haven't been great since the sweep of cal, but not quite terrible either. 
Baseball has more randomness than most popular american sports, and even most good teams go through dry spells. Stanford is only 2-4 since sweeping cal, but if that is the low point it's not so terrible. 

Recently we have seen both the potential and problem for this team. 

Pitching:
- Matthews has been steady; generally good but not spectacular.
- Scott will be the next ace of the staff, but his outing vs Oregon was his worst of the season. 
- Dowd showed why he could be a star, but has been frustrating. Was great vs Oregon. He has great stuff, and when he's on he's a top-level pitcher, but when he's off he goes from missing the strike zone to throwing up meatballs to avoid walks. Last two outings he went 5 innings pitched, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk. Previous two outings - 4 innings, 9 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks.  
- Sac State disaster was mostly two pitchers struggling: Montgomery and Uber. Neither has pitched much this year. For Uber, that has surprised me. For Montgomery it seems to be because he is concentrating on being an outfielder. 
- Two bright spots: Max Meier has just had a couple of the best outings of his career. Last two appearances: 5.1 innings pitched, 0 runs, 2 hits, 0 walks. Ryan Bruno's last two outings have been much better: 3 innings pitched, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 6 strike outs. Maybe he's finally getting back to his form from the end of last season.

Hitting:
- This is a power hitting team. They're not going to hit for high average and will have some dry spells. Oregon's pitchers in games 1 and 2 were very good (Friday starter Stoffel got Pac 12 pitcher of the week), but Stanford helped them out a lot as well. 
- So, over the 6 game down spell Stanford scored 6 or more runs three times, but also put up 0,1,2 in three other games. Averaged 6.5 runs/game. 

Overall.
- Stanford is in second place in the Pac 12, 1/2 game behind ASU. Third place is UCLA two games behind Stanford, though they have both a tie and a snowed out game cancelled. ASU last weekend split two with UW then had the third rained out. They just followed that up with a non-conference loss to UA by 20-0. Ouch. 
- The fewest losses (overall) for any team in the Pac 12 is 11. Six of the eleven teams have 11 losses. A little weird.

The weird thing about the post season is that circumstances can take you from being able to get by with a small amount of (good) pitching all the way to needing a to manage 5 games in 3 days. 

Stanford is reasonably well set up for a three-game weekend with Matthews, Scott and the Dixon-Dowd combination. Four to five game weekends scare me a lot, particularly because those extra games would be elimination games. To get back to the CWS Stanford may need to win a 15-14 lack-of-pitchers duel somewhere along the way.
