That really was quite the final play.
Some curious bits:
- The live stats described the back end of the play as "Mahler, R. advanced to third, scored on a throwing error by 2b, unearned" but then under Scorer's Decision listed it as E5.
The box score/play by play confirms it was recorded as E4, which I think is the standard call as the ball bounced. But it looked to me as if 3B made the bigger muff.
- Pretty sure if the 3B had caught the throw, Mahler would have been out. Still, it's hard enough to score in softball it was a risk worth taking.
- If Mahler had been thrown out, Allister should have challenged the call at 1B. It sure looked to me as if Gindlesperger beat the throw. Of course irrelevant as things turned out.

I put the video on .25 speed. Stanford runner at first looked safe to me. Throw to third base was not bad. It bounced but IMO 3B should have easily caught it. 3B might have been too focused on tagging runner before securing the ball. In any event lucky break for Stanford and I didn't get to see it live.

Really tough loss to ucla 1-0. Two errors in the 6th cost Stanford although not sure why the runner was safe at second on that error. However must have been obvious to the coaches

A couple of mistakes by the coaching staff; pulling Canady, and then not challenging the ball at second. Would have gotten out of the inning with no damage. But at the end of the day, you have to score every time to win, and we did not today.
I think we have done enough to get that top 8 seed (if anything, because of some absolute chaos out there with the would be chasers of the Cardinal). I think a compelling argument could made for a seed as high as #4. I will set my prediction as a #6 seed.

Great joke spiny. And hence my hesitation in definitively predicting a top 8 seed, certainly after the UW home series loss and before the UO win. It would be a travesty if this team didn't get a top 8 seed, but there are plenty of people elsewhere in the country (SEC country for example or down in LA) who think we shouldn't get a top 8 seed because of our performance against the top teams in the Pac, or because of our offense (or both). But in a crazy scenario with Northwestern, Duke, Washington and maybe even Texas all seeded higher than us, I could see a #9 seed.

NCAA tournament selection show is 4:00 pm PT today on ESPN2. The last game against UCLA was a good showing for Stanford on ESPN2 even though it was a loss. Will it be enough to get Stanford into the top eight seeds?

At this point, we still lack power and consistent hitting, but I am sure Jessica will rectify that through recruiting. The Cardinal somehow, have been stunningly left off the top 8 seed line.
To put a bow on this is the first time in the history of the NCAA tournament under its current "Super Regionals" format that a top 4 RPI team,
let alone a top 3 RPI team, has not been a top 8 seed.
Stanford is a #9 seed, and get Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount and Florida in their regional.
Duke is the #8 seed with Charlotte, Campbell and George Mason in the Durham regional.
One other lesson from seeding: H2H results matter. Washington is a top 8 seed (after beating us at home). Duke is a top 8 seed
beating us in the first tournament of the year. I flagged that loss to Duke for a while as a potentially significant factor in determining
our seeding. I can almost guarantee if that early season contest goes the other way, Stanford would have been the #8 seed (which the committee chair also has essentially confirmed).
Second factor: you have to beat top competition (specifically top 10 wins) (which the committee chair has now confirmed, along with top 25 wins and H2H, were the three main criteria). We didn't beat anyone in the top 10 (four losses to UCLA, a loss to Oklahoma, and a loss to Duke).

In the abstract, I agree with you, and I think regional/super regional matchups (who you play) are almost as important as where you play. However, in practice, Alabama was seeded #5 in this tourney. We know a bit about Alabama beating them in Tuscaloosa last year. Their performance this year in the SEC, their RPI metrics etc. said they weren't a #5 national seed.
If Stanford doesn't hit enough, we will go out early against almost any regional/super-regional matchup (particularly a Florida squad that can score runs).
However, if Stanford plays its game, I don't think this regional, or the teams out of the Durham regional, are an impossible path to Oklahoma City. A team like Northwestern getting possibly sent to Tuscaloosa if chalk holds is far worse of an outcome than getting sent to a program that is still building its softball culture and has essentially only been competing for 5 years.
