Something else stuck out to me that maybe others also noticed. Spencer Jones did not suit for the game but he was on the bench. The announcers said he was sick. I know I'm speculating and I don't have details to support, but it didn't pass the look test for me. Usually if someone is deemed sick, they don't stay around the team. Or maybe they are at the end of the bench away from everyone. But he sat right in the middle. And he did not look sick at all. Smiling, jumping around, clapping. This looked to me like he was held out. He's been hurt and hasn't been playing too well, so maybe the coaches thought it would be the right time to give him a chance to heal up because they could beat NI without him. Wrong! This Stanford team has very minimal depth. With our main guys gassed, we ended up with rotations that had Geeler, Stojakovich, Keefe, Agarwal...yikes. It was ugly.
If the coaches did hold him out, I think that was a big mistake. Jones is a solid defender and rebounder. Even 15 minutes of him at less than 100% would have helped a ton. I also think Spencer looked like he could have played and the kid strikes me as a competitor who would want to be out there for the team, not to sit out because of an upset tummy. Either way, the result is a bunch of tired, sore-bodied players who are wondering why the team leader is sitting out the game. The result was a lackluster effort with zero leadership. That's on the coach.
There is a world where Carlyle plays, along with SJones, Bynum, Angel, Raynaud, MJones as a core 6. Geeler as a fine backup. That's actually pretty solid and they could surprise a lot of teams. Not sure if they have it in them to overcome their coaching though, because he'll still probably play all the other guys!
