Well, with Betts gone, with Bessoir out for the season, with Dugalic and Sontag off to trials, that would theoretically leave 6'4" Izzy Antsey but she has been out a couple of weeks and did not travel to Cal, and 6'4" freshman Amanda Muse. No wonder Close is betting the farm on guard play!
Muse played 4 minutes at Cal so I expect we will see a lot of her today, as the only remaining tall person on the UCLA team. She has not played more than 6 minutes since Pac 12 play began. I doubt if anyone knows if she is any good since there is almost nothing to scout. When you play behind all those other bigs there are not many opportunities. Well, she could get a chance today.
Someone Close praised after the Cal game was 6'2" sophomore forward Christeen Iwuala. She played 18 minutes at Cal, got 4 O-boards, a couple of assists, and was 2/2. I imagine we will see a LOT of her. She will probably start.
My prediction: with the three guards Rice Jones and Osborne carrying nearly all the offense, we can expect to see a lot of 6'0" forward Gabriela Jaquez and 6'2" Christeen Iwuala. If they are unable to defend Brink and Iriafen with them, then we will see Muse come in to absorb some fouls.
Starting lineup I predict:
Jones
Osborne
Rice
Jaquez
Iwuala
This is a small, quick lineup. Muse off the bench for their only height. The only other available bench player would be 5'11" grad student guard Camryn Brown. Brown gave them 14 minutes at Cal. If Jones, Osborne, or Rice get in foul trouble she is it. She is 1/9 from three this year.
There will be two keys to our offense today. First, we need to keep Brink and Iriafen IN the game. The speedy UCLA guards could get them in foul trouble. But if they can BOTH stay out of foul trouble we should be absolutely dominant inside.
Second, we need to be able to get the ball to them. The smaller UCLA lineup will probably front them, so lob passes and and successful three point shots if they are doubled will open it up.
The key on defense--what the heck. Just slow them down. Lepolo on Jones, Jump on Osborne, Bosgana et al on Rice. Just make them work a bit for their points, and hope our inside game will be so dominant that we can outscore them.
The obvious strategy given the situation is for us to RUN RUN RUN and just to exhaust their 7 by the fourth quarter.
