PA is for Palo Alto. I did grow up outside Philly in the early 80's, that's where I began my sports fandom.

Not really a trivia question, just wanted to get your personal opinions in the wake of Pete Rose's recent demise. Pete was given the nickname "Charley Hustle", a nickname that coaches and broadcasters used reverently, but when Mickey Mantle assigned that particular nickname, he meant it derisively.
If you put personalities aside, and concentrate solely on baseball skills, let's say you own or are GM of a team, and you can pick just one of them to start the team, which one do you pick?
For Rose: played in almost 50% more games than Mantle, had 2/3rds more at bats, 1,831 more hits, scored 656 more runs, beat Mantle out in both triples (135 to 72) and doubles (746 to 344), 45 more career SBs but thrown out a far higher percentage than Mantle, slightly higher batting average (.303 to .298), struck out 557 fewer times, 3 batting titles, 2 gold gloves, 1 silver slugger. Rose more versatile, named an A-Star and played 500+ games at five positions.
For Mantle: much more powerful hitter with a higher on base percentage; 536 HRs to 160, had 167 more walks (was HBP almost 100 times fewer), .421 OBP to .375, .557 slugging % to .409, .977 OPS to .784, 172 OPS+ to 118 for Rose, and Mantle also led in WAR, 110.2 to 79.5.
Rose played 24 seasons, Mantle played 18. Mantle made 20 all star teams in 16 seasons, Rose made 17 all star teams in 17 seasons. Rose was nine years younger, and played in a more integrated sport.

Mantle for sure. Rose was an excellent player but no one struck fear into a pitcher like Mantle. Stats aren’t everything.

For a game or a month or a season at or near their peak, for sure. No question you'd rather have Mantle. But Rose played 50% more games than Mantle. Statistically, Rose was a better fielder, and could play more positions.

Oh cmon Mick. On any team at any level the best fielders play SS and CF, which Mantle did. Rose played 3B, 2B, 1B, LF and RF — mainly because they wanted his bat somewhere in the lineup in front of Foster, Perez, Bench etc. Yes he was versatile but Mantle could have easily played any of those positions. If Mantle had a worse fielding pct it would be because he got to balls Rose would never have even touched.

Agreed, a team wants to be strong up the middle, C, SS, and CF, although I would want a strong 3B and 2B as well. And you're right, Rose did have slightly better metrics and Mantle had slightly better range.

Rose had two gold gloves, Mantle had one. Ironically, Rose played 1/3rd of his 1969 GG season in CF.
Rose had more than twice as many chances in his career (16k to 7k), nearly twice as many putouts...and twice as many errors. 5x as many DPs.
Rose was more versatile. He played five different positions at 589 or more games each and Mantle played just the one, with 276 games as a corner outfielder with a -7 Rtot in RF and a -6 Rtot in LF. Rose's figures were +52 in LF (prob his best position) and +3 in RF (where he won two gold gloves). Mantle also had negative Rtot at 1B (-14) and CF (-10). The OFs who won multiple gold gloves during Mantle's career included Al Kaline, Yaz, Jim Landis, Minny Minoso, and Jimmy Piersall. Other OFs who, like Mantle, won a single gold glove during Mantle's career included Vic Davalillo, Norm Siebern, Jackie Jensen, Tom Tresh, Tony Oliva, Tommie Agee, Mickey Stanley, and Roger Maris. Since October 3, 1960 was a Monday, and new rankings came out on Monday, I would guess it had something to do with the rankings. I'm going to guess:
1) it's the first time since then that a team (Oregon) beat the #2 overall team but didn't get a #1 ranking or
2) Vandy having the brobdingnagian upset of a Top 10 team ('bama) and didn't get ranked in the Top 25 or
3) Seven Top 25 teams were upset.
