Well, here we are, at what may well be the last home game of the year. Senior day. Brooke Demetre and Elena Bosgana are expected to graduate and leave after the year. Four Five recruits are coming in, and so two others we don't know will be leaving. (We have 14 on the roster now, so only 4 have to depart to make room for the incoming class.) Nothing has been announced, but most of us expect it to be Lauren Green, a former walk-on, and Jzaniya Harriel. Green has another year of eligibility, but I imagine nothing was promised her as far as four years is concerned. Harriel is a redshirt junior, meaning she has had her four years on scholarship but has another year of eligibility. I would guess that she graduates and takes a grad transfer somewhere else. All pure speculation on my part. I suppose if someone else has let the coaching staff know they are leaving that Harriel could stay another year. Harriel has had an injury-plagued career but at one point was our best three point shooter--outshooting Hannah jump by percentage. As always, it will be sad to see the four go, but none of them were four year starters, and so the fans probably did not get too firmly attached to any of them.
I hope that our seniors bring their best play to this game. We need the "good" Bosgana and the "good" Demetre. Georgia Tech is a better team than any we have played in a while. Massey has them at 34--with Cal at 33, for comparison. Cal did just beat them 79-65. GT is 21-8, 9-8 in conference, and 5-4 on the road, although they have lost 3 in a row. Massey predicts a Stanford win 73-66. Georgia Tech's best win was over North Carolina. Their worst loss was at Clemson.
Just like Miami, this trip will be the first time they have played outside the Atlantic time zone this year--except for their Hawaii tournament last fall.
GT has three leading scorers, all averaging 13-16 points. Kara Dunn leads at 16. She is a 5'11" junior guard in her third year at GT. She hits about 38% of her treys, and treys are nearly half of her shots.
Dani Carnegie is their second leading scorer but has not started a game. She is a 5'9" freshman guard who shoots it from all over at 40%.
Toni Morgan, the third leading scorer, is a 5'9" junior guard. She is not much of a three point shooter but makes 40% of her shots, almost all from inside.
Just looking at those three give me match-up nightmares. Three speedy little guards who all have to be guarded closely. Not our forte. They have bench depth too, and in addition to Carnegie they can bring out a 5'4" freshman.
While GT puts a swarm of small guards on the floor, they do have some height. Ariadna Termis is 6'6" and plays about half of each game.
GT is coached by venerable Nell Fortner, who has been head coach at Purdue, the Indiana Fever, and Auburn before Georgia Tech.
