Ref did a good job today - it wasn’t that rough, but it had weird moments he got right and he actually did things to deal with the time wasting.
My one complaint with the men is they lack patience on offense much of the time and can end up banging in mediocre cross after mediocre cross over and over instead of trying something more interesting once in awhile. Note the goals yesterday.
Goal 1 did come on a cross but where Palmer got all the way forward and was unmarked - good aggression and a change up coming forward that far from LB.
Goal 2, Islam did something different and went around his guy on the edge instead of simply crossing right away. Made for an easy tap in for Chow.
Goal 3 - Islam again with a change up rocket from 30-35 yards out.
You can see though why Islam has been such an impact player this year. He processes the game a bit differently from the typical college player.
I really appreciate your posts on the soccer games (men and women), Hieronymus. Thank you for sharing your observations and insights.
Islam is not a big guy, but he does a good job of holding the ball with his back to goal, which is so valuable in stringing together passes in the offensive zone. The BC defender towered over him, but he kept the defender off the ball. (I liked Kiil last year for that reason.) I think that in a previous post you said you were disappointed in de Flores, and I agree that he has struggled. He has made some nice flick-on headers leading to goals, and he got one himself v OSU, but his ball-handling has been poor, as it seems the ball always gets stuck directly under his body, from where he can't do anything with it. Islam is clearly an improvement.
I completely agree with your observation about a lack of patience, not only on offense but defense. I realize men's college soccer can resemble roller derby at times, and if you don't get rid of the ball you risk winding up in the hospital, but there is far too much of what we clambered for in junior soccer: "Boot it!!" On offense, just last night there were at least a few times when a shot taken a moment later would have likely led to a much better chance.
Jeremy Gunn certainly believes in meritocracy, as in addition to de Flores, Dylan Hooper and Duncan Jarvie have been displaced by younger players. That's got to be tough, and as one who loves to worry, I hope it does not affect team chemistry. (Not that I've seen anything to suggest that...from my home in Denver.)
I also worry that Rowan Schnebly might let in a bad goal at a bad time. I still remember his terrible gaff against SMU last year, and he can be sketchy playing the ball with his feet.
I think you posted earlier that you'd never give any particular team more than 10% odds of winning NCAAs, and I'm inclined to think there's even greater parity (coupled with the randomness of soccer outcomes) than that. Which makes playing as many games in the tournament at home so important, and therefore every regular season game significant.
