And I hope it is that close, SJSU looked much better against USC than Stanford looked playing KSU.
A team with CFP dreams will need to beat the lower tier Pac-12 teams, like Stanford, by big margins to maintain any credibility with the committee.

Does anyone really enjoy picking against your own team just to get more points on a fan message board? Against the alma mater for most of you?

No money is on the line here, and I have no pride in trying to win this contest. You will be getting an extremely irrational pick from me. Maybe I'll go with 24-23, just for old times' sake.

And if the season continues to get worse, I'll probably bail from the contest but not from the team. But you guys have your fun, picking us to get blown out. I won't judge, I just don't enjoy it.

I never enjoy picking against my team. I always look for reasons to bolster my confidence in a Cardinal win. But sometimes you simply have to accept reality; and right now, there are not a lot of data points suggesting we will beat the Trojans in the coliseum. It could happen (Pritchard, Sherman and Co. in 2007), but pure reason dictates that it will not. If you are predicting, you go with the data, not your hopes or emotions. Every time I pick against the Cardinal, I hope that I am wrong. I could not care less about winning this prediction contest. If I am dead last and we get an NY6 bowl bid, that is a good result.

Your list above was pretty funny. Some more to add: 1-point conversions down multiples of 8 in the 4th quarter, declined holding calls, unavailable ILBs, QBs sliding 2 yards from a critical 1st down, and penalties on the left tackle.

I am still processing my complicated feelings about Stanford Football right now. I just can't enjoy picking against us and don't care enough about being right. What is it that Winston Churchill said? "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty..."

You are right on! I have revised my prediction to counter Phogge's.

BTW, this sentiment is why I suggested that there should be a major points penalty in our prediction game for picking Stanford to lose.

I predicted that KSU would win by ten points in the contest; but during the game I was 100% rooting for Stanford to win and 0% rooting for my prediction to be correct.

The prediction game is a contest intended to be fun. While luck plays a big part, in theory the winner is the best at analyzing all of the data and synthesizing this into a prediction of the final score of games. To play the game properly, there should be no influence from fan sentimentality. Setting aside feelings of loyalty towards your favorite team is difficult for some, so they play the game with a major handicap. This is why such a game on a fan board is fickle. Some may play the game to express their optimism, their loyalty, or their pessimism -- despite the data.

Through many years of following The Cardboard I have noticed that some members make great effort to convince other members of their position on topics. I've always wondered to what end is this effort. If everyone on this board had the same opinion on every issue, it would be oppressively boring. Surely the effort is not made to somehow influence the outside world (e.g., getting Shaw fired because a consensus on The Cardboard says he should go). Is the effort made to prove how smart you are? Is the effort made to seek justification of your own feelings by ratification from others? Do some just enjoy arguing? It is perplexing.

No disagreement from me there. As stated from the very beginning:

To your question about whether some just enjoy arguing - that's one of the main points of a message board. Most of the time, you can call it debating rather than arguing, though. There is a great debate on another thread about the best Prince album ever.

Sometimes posts can involve virtue-signaling, such as my post above. FWIW, I knew what I was doing and it was for entertainment purposes. That said, it's true for me - I don't enjoy picking against my team. Nobody wants bland milquetoast posts here. If anything, we need more pot-stirring.
