Men's BB: Stanford 57 -- Cal 50 -
Papa John - 01-31-2022
The Stanford men entered last weekend's roadie to LA at #98 NET and tied for fifth in the conference. After splitting the trip, including a Quad 1 win and another reminder that Stanford cannot hang with elite teams, Stanford is <sarcasm>all the way up to</sarcasm> #89 NET and alone in seventh place in the Pac-12 standings. However, Tuesday's previously postponed contest vs Cal is the start of a four-game home stand with the two teams immediately above Stanford in the standings--UW and WSU--visiting Maples later on this week.
But first up is Cal. The Dirty Golden Bears are at #128 in the NET rankings and 0-6 on the road. They have played eight (!) Quad 1 games and lost them all. They are 2-8 in conference, which puts them all alone in 10th place. On offense, Cal is not terribly impressive--only 63.2 ppg, which is next-to-last in conference play--although they only commit 11.2 turnovers per game, which is 2nd to UCLA. On defense, the Bears give up 69.9 ppg, which is .1 ppg better than Stanford. But they have a negative net rebounding margin and negative net turnover margin. In fact, Cal only forces 8.3 turnovers per game in conference, which is dead last.
The Bears have two players who average double figures in conference games: Sr G Jordan Shepherd (15.3 ppg) and Sr F Andre Kelly (11.4 ppg). Shepherd is a graduate transfer who played two years at Oklahoma and three years at Charlotte. I read somewhere--so this may not be entirely accurate--that Stanford is one of 5 D1 schools that does not have a transfer on its roster this season. And the most recent transfer to Stanford basketball was Andrew Zimmerman in 2009. Or something like that.
Cal coach Mark Fox looks a bit like George Castanza on his wikipedia page. He experienced a lot of success at Nevada in the early 2000s, then spent nine years at Georgia, where he experienced modest success (which I would take right now), but was let go. After a gap year, Fox joined the Bears. In 2+ seasons, his teams have gone 31-47 (12-33).

And on a somewhat related note, congratulations to Harrison Ingram, who earned his fifth Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award for his performance in LA last week!

Looking for big things from HI this week at home vs Cal and the Washington schools.

The next three games are all must wins if this team wants to even get a sniff of a trip to the dance.

I wish the team could get a little more rest after that LA trip. Heck,
I could use more rest after that UCLA game.
But a mediocre opponent who doesn't force turnovers should be a good matchup for us. We'd better take advantage.

8 games in 17 days. 2 days off before Cal is a long break in that stretch.

And Cal is on the same 3-games-in-6-days schedule, since they were our travel partners to LA. No excuses. Beat Cal!

This is a must-win on multiple levels. From here on, Stanford practically needs to win out and this year's weenies are historically weak. Gotta smoke these guys.

Cal hasn't been great for years now, but they've managed to beat Stanford a fair amount.
I agree Stanford has to have this game, but I don't see Stanford smoking them (or anyone, really).

Yes, I fear 'tis bridge too far for Haase.

At this point I think NIT is the most likely scenario. As teejers noted, Stanford's margin of victory has not been impressive; our biggest margin was 14 points over both lowly SJSU and North Carolina A&T. 8 of our 12 wins have been single-digit or OT. On the other hand, some of our losses have been flat-out nightmarish: by 16 to Santa Clara (whom Cal defeated outright); 38 to Baylor; 28 to Arizona; 23 to a depleted UCLA team. The rankings that don't take into account margin of victory love Stanford. We're #28 in RPI! But, unfortunately for us, the committee uses NET instead.
Beat Cal!

I don't like using the transitive property, especially in MBB.
Cal may have beaten Santa Clara, but we have beaten USC twice (Cal lost to them twice) and Wazzu (Cal lost to them).
We beat Oregon, who beat (a full-strength!) UCLA a few weeks ago.
You can find such examples for almost any school. Same generally goes for football too (actually, us beating Oregon is a great example there as well).

I’m not feeling the energy I thought the students/crowd would bring.
They said there was a power outage in Maples before the game which messed up the shot clocks. Seems to have affected both offenses’ power as well. 21-20 good guys at the half.

With 4:23 to play we have 45 points. Fortunately cal only has 39.

We can do this if we want it enough.
7 turnovers in a low possession game. I’ll take it.
Watching these Cardiac kids is bad for my blood pressure.

Keefe was came close to a double double with 8 points and 11 rebounds. We played down to our opponent in this low scoring game. It was mostly a close game until the last couple of minutes. Not a very encouraging win.

Definitely not an encouraging win. Very tough to watch. Nonetheless, you have to find a way to win those ugly games. And most importantly, we BEAT CAL!!!!! That always feels good. Stanford must win the next two to have any chance for a tournament bid. That just keeps them in the running. Lose and its over. I really want this team to develop and get to a level where they make the tourney. I would love it if they can start to build some momentum that can start to flow from season to season. Hope lives another day.
Cheers,
Pete F.

Always good to beat the Weenies. Not pretty, but I did like how they took care of the ball, particularly in the final 5 minutes. However, better teams are going to pressure the ball a lot more.
Two must-win games tomorrow & Saturday!

This ritualistic "most importantly, we BEAT CAL!!!!!" bores me at this juncture in human evolution. Who gives a hoot if we beat a team considerably more mediocre than ours? IMO, it's much more noteworthy that we racked up a paltry 57 points against a team as bad as that opponent, not the sheer fact that we "BEAT CAL!!!!!" Having worked at Stanford for decades and now working in the U.C. system, I can personally attest that there are wonderful faculty, staff, and students (as well as some bozos) at both distinguished institutions.

I sure as hell do. Must be the Denisova hominins in me.
