Mosley, who made waves throughout training camp during the spring and fall, has not seen any in-game action to start the year due to a leg injury.

Quote:In a surprising move to start the season, Taylor appears to favor youth talent over veteran experience. Connor McLaughlin, a fifth-year lineman widely thought to remain the starting right tackle, seems to have lost his starting job to sophomore Luke Baklenko. Similarly, first-year Kahlil House appears to have beaten out senior left tackle Jack Leyrer. Taylor praised the young tackles’ raw talent, competitive spirit and dedication.

I haven't heard anything about Tobin Phillips, who did not make the trip to Syracuse. He's on this week's depth chart, but so is Elijah Brown, so we know they prefer not to update it. Phillips' injury seemed like it could be a tear of an upper body muscle, based on the way his arm stuck to the ball carrier as he went down. With the DL trending up, he would be another useful big-bodied player, although the youth movement is okay, too.

Frankly speaking, this update is worthless. It simply tells us WHEN Brown was injured and that he's expected to recover fully. It is irritatingly mute on WHAT the injury is and WHEN he's expected back. PATHETICALLY opaque. What is the problem here? What advantage could opponents gain from learning what his injury is and when he's llkely to return? If that's not the concern, what is? As far as Mosely is concerned, this "update" says nothing about when he was injured or what the injury was and it comes only 3 days before Emmet had a great game against Clemson. It's almost an anti-climactic "update." TT, you can (and should) do better than this!

Quite possibly he can't. HIPAA fairly severely limits what information can be disclosed without the patient's consent. It is probably true that TT didn't pester Brown about what he could and could not say, but it is a can of worms that coaches have no incentive to open. For all we know the AD has told the coaches "Just don't go there" for legal reasons. In this case I doubt there is any "gamesmanship" involved.

Easy there, big boy! In truth, none of your damned business. I imagine there are some HIPAA considerations in play here along with that.

Taylor is not bound by HIPAA as he is not part of the health care team. Convenient excuse for him and other coaches to hide behind though.

Technically TT is not a "covered entity" under HIPAA (
https://www.cms.gov/priorities/key-initiatives/burden-reduction/administrative-simplification/hipaa/covered-entities), but I do think that we ought to respect players' right to privacy about their injuries as a matter of course, and the health information of a student (they are still considered students, right?) may be covered by FERPA (
https://campusguard.com/post/hipaa-vs-ferpa-high-level-guidance-for-higher-ed/#:~:text=Colleges%20and%20universities%20are%20required,of%20their%20non%2Dstudent%20patients.). Regardless, our curiosity doesn't strike me as compelling enough to get bent out of shape about a coach who plays it close to the vest, whether officially restricted or not.

Quote:Any disclosure of injury or additional information in those records to other than those specifically enumerated in FERPA can only be done if the student-athlete consents in writing. One group that is allowed access without first obtaining such a written consent is other institutional employees who have legitimate educational interests in the records. The SEC this year began publishing an availability report for each conference game. No information about specific injuries, however.
Quote: SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said the new policy is designed to curtail individuals who might try to seek information on injuries and suspensions from student-athletes for gambling purposes.
"This availability reporting policy is intended to reduce pressure from outside entities seeking participation information and represents a commitment of our 16 institutions to provide enhanced transparency to support efforts to protect our student-athletes and the integrity of competition," Sankey said in a statement.

The article states that the B1G and MAC do something similar.

IMO it is very important to read that statement carefully. The phrase "for the purpose of protecting the health and safety of the student-athlete" is controlling. Disclosing such information for reasons other than "protecting the health and safety of the student-athlete" is therefore prohibited, even if the coach is not part of a "covered entity". Informing the public certainly is outside those bounds. The coach making the disclosure and his employer would absolutely be civilly liable. Nobody involved wants to get sued. As the article goes on to state
Quote:An authorization to release PHI for treatment purposes can be a prerequisite to a student-athlete's participation in the athletics program.
Authorization is not necessary on a per-injury basis; a blanket authorization at the beginning of the year will suffice for all injuries and treatments done during the course of participation for the year.
Authorizations must indicate clearly what information may be released, to whom and for what length of time.
If the "to whom" doesn't include the media, it is absolutely clear disclosure is prohibited. I would be astonished if Stanford's "Consent Form" included the media or the general public, as the coaches actually don't want to release the information. Why forgo an iron-clad legal excuse?

Coach TT indicated in today's weekly presser that
Ashton Daniels is day-to-day and might be able to play on Saturday depending on how much he improves. This might be gamesmanship with respect to this Saturday, but in any case, it was clear that Daniels did not experience any sort of season-ending foot injury (as rumored). We can infer that Daniels probably experienced a lower ankle sprain. If this is wrong and Daniels is out for an extended time, then we might as well stop listening to or believing anything that TT says about any injury.
TT's update on
Jay Green was "questionable" for Saturday but considerably less optimistic in tenor and body language. This is interesting because many of us suspected a serious non-contact knee injury based on what we saw in the game. In some ways, the questionable status of Green seems to discredit the positive update on Daniels to some degree.
However, a couple of weeks ago when Patterson and Phillips were both indicated as day-to-day and trying to play for Syracuse, Patterson ended up playing in that game and Phillips was back the following week. It seems that when TT conveys optimistic injury updates with a positive tone, he is being truthful. However, when he indicates lukewarm or questionable injury status with negative body language, he is being a bit deceptive and the reality is worse.
For those wondering why
David Bailey isn't getting more snaps, TT indicated that the staff has been managing a health-related condition but they hope to increase his snaps going forward.
