I'm starting to think we'll be lucky to go 3-9 next year.
Somebody please convince me I'm being too pessimistic.

Daniels will not be our QB.

We are bringing in 2 veteran transfer CBs and will not have freshmen and walk-ons playing there out of necessity, which by itself lost us the final 2 games of the season.

We are bringing in at least 2 transfer OL.

Daniels will not be our QB.

We are bringing in at least 1 transfer WR, maybe 2. It was known Elic would declare.

There has been zero front 7 attrition outside of eligibility expiry.

Daniels will not be our QB.

So given all that, if you had to speculate what our record would be next year, what would be your best guess?

Is Stanford really not bringing in a QB? That would be a horrible mistake, imo. If Brown looks good in the spring he could easily be poached. I guess Stanford would then have an opportunity to bring someone in, but that person would have much less time to prepare for fall 2025. Not to mention the possibility of injury, which could happen at any time to anyone but, let's face it, is more likely behind Stanford's porous O-line (barring major improvements).

Apologies, but that was my big takeaway from your post.

Good move for Elic. He's #47 in the ESPN pre-draft assessment. Unlikely he would have gone higher.

As for next season:

Hawaii, win
BYU, win
SJSU, win
Miami, loss
North Carolina, win over hugely overrated new coach
SMU, loss
Boston College, loss
Cal, win
Florida State, win
Pitt, loss
Virginia, loss

6-6 overall. LA Bowl, same as Cal this year. Fresno State opponent.

4-8 at best…

Wins over SJS, Hawaii, BC and one upset to be determined.

Stanford is at least a couple years from getting back on track.

RE: Ayomanor declares for NFL draft - fullmetal - 12-20-2024

Regardless, Elic should leave if this is the best timing for him.  A stellar draft result for Elic and successful NFL career will only reflect well on Stanford.

Wow, it's been a while since I've looked at that schedule. It's brutal, especially when you consider that ND is expected to be the 12th team. (We're still assuming this, right?)

We have bigger problems than not having Elic - good for him to go get his money. He was the hero in our most exciting wins, but it's a team sport and we have other complete voids on our roster that made us very easy to beat. (For example, I'll start feeling better if we can sign a couple more offensive linemen who are proven above-average starters.)

Here are the current Sagarin ratings for next year's schedule.
#1 ND (TBD)
#10 SMU
#15 Miami
#17 BYU
#50 BC
#52 Pitt
#64 Cal
#67 UNC
#75 Virginia
#82 FSU
#101 SJSU
#114 Hawaii
------------
#97 Stanford

The only reason we had 3 wins this year was the presence of Cal Poly (a sure win) on our schedule.  SJSU can go 7-5 while being the #101 team in the country, but against our schedule, it seems like we'll have to get to around #60 (or maybe even as high as #40) to go 6-6.  NC State went 6-6 this year at #60 against the 65th hardest schedule, whereas our schedule will likely be top 20 in strength.  (Our strength of schedule was #21 this season with Cal Poly included.) Arkansas went 6-6 this year as the #43 team against the #22 schedule.  Nothing is getting any easier for us...

Back to Elic - he put in a ton of work to pull a 3.96 in Computer Science. I hope he finishes his degree at some point because he has already done way too much work to waste.

Couldn't disagree more on Daniels. I think he has a lot of arm and leg talent but was hindered mostly by a very weak supporting cast. I actually wish Brown had entered the portal and Daniels had stayed.

He's the most athletic QB that Stanford has had since Hogan. And I don't think I've ever seen a SU QB who was tasked to do more, but who had less to work with.

There was essentially no running game, a QB's best friend. In fact, Daniels WAS the running game. The OL was horrible all season, and the WRs had a hard time separating from DBs, though Mosely made big strides later in the season. But as a unit they sucked. I used to laugh whenever I saw Stanford go 4-wide. It gave them no tactical advantage, and they were EASY to defend.

Brown? Limited pocket mobility and zero threat to put pressure on a defense by running. Arm strength? So-so, not as strong as Daniels'. I don't think Brown would have survived the season if Taylor had continued to play him. He would have been eaten alive.

I agree, 3 wins is max. I think it's going to be ugly. And Taylor is NOT the man for the job. I was against the hire from day one.

RE: Ayomanor declares for NFL draft - Farm93 - 12-21-2024

The transfer portal really reduces the value of prior season ratings and rankings....for everyone but Stanford.

For example, Florida State is a mega brand in this sport.   They will be able to create a very competitive team via the portal rather easily.

Most of the other teams in the ACC are not exactly mega brands, so a decent Stanford squad could be competitive with most of the others in the conference.  However to be a decent team would require a strong coach (no comment for now) and a top tier QB or two.    The catch is that QBs now cost quite a bit of money and they also expect to play in front of large passionate crowds to then enhance their actual NIL value.

So I am not confident Stanford, with TT as coach, will be able to attract and then retain QBs required to get 6-6, or better, seasons.

I suspect even a 5 win season would be a major accomplishment requiring multiple upsets as a 7-10 point dog.

I expect to see preseason experts predict a 2-10 type season.   And if the team gets 3 wins that will be good enough for Muir to extend TT's contract.

RE: Ayomanor declares for NFL draft - JohnR34231 - 12-21-2024

I never thought Daniels was as bad as his detractors claim; that his absence at quarterback will automatically be a plus for the team. He was a good runner and a hit or miss passer. Unfortunately, some of his misses came at the most inopportune times.
I also think it is a little early to pass judgment on Brown. I do worry about his mobility. He is used to playing on a physically dominant offense and no longer will be.
Time will tell how good next year's team will be. I can't say I'm optimistic on an improvement in W-L record.

Thanks for the rare, brutally candid appraisal of the flailing, sad-sack status of Stanford football, a laughable shadow of the short-and-sweet Harbaugh/Bowlsby era. The university has only itself to blame for the Portal-NIL shambles it's in. Fitting. And entirely avoidable.  Whenever I need a good (albeit cynical) belly laugh, I read the cheerleaders on his site. You know who you are. They're almost  as entertaining as the know-it-all pontificators and apologists. FOOTBALL IS DEAD. Deal with it.

It doesn't seem to me that there are many cheerleaders and apologists on this site anymore.
There are:
1. People who are hopeful that the program can be turned around.
2. Cynics who say it can't.
1 still outnumbers 2, but the gap is closing.
