Multiple press articles have said the new president is more football-aware than we've seen in recent past. Witness Andrew Luck and the recently departed AD. Fingers crossed on that. If so, I'd like to make a pitch for a more traditional Spring Game. I get that there are limited practices, etc., but forcing football-starved spring fans to watch position drills from the bleachers is as tone deaf as calling the same play every time they get inside the 3. Does ANY other major program do that? While others teams are getting their fans all charged up for the season to come, Stanford's spring event would suck the energy out of a black hole. How does that help the program? At all? Fans leave with just one overpowering message: if you mistakenly go to a game this year, don't forget to bring a book! If this is a new era of Stanford football, let's see it start in April!!!!

82lsju beat me to it. Schools have been cancelling their spring games to prevent other schools from having a chance to scout and potentially poach their players.

Hmmm... I honestly think no spring game would be better than some of the recent vigils they've held in the Stadium. Maybe I should change the title of this thread.... :)

Honestly, if the players aren't clamoring for a spring game, then I'm okay without one. While it is nice...it is also an open invite for coaches to somehow reach out and solicit transferees, despite all rules to the contrary.

Well, it turns out Stanford's non-spring-game was the best Spring Game I've seen in a while. The Season Ticket Holder event today was a big improvement over recent spring games. It started in Maples with AL giving his thoughts and answering questions -- nothing really new there other than that he makes pancakes for his kids every morning. :) After the Q&A, we went to the practice field where they started with position drills and then quickly moved on to a full red/white scrimmage. Lots of energy on the field -- more so than recent years. During the Q&A, AL said they had a real QB competition on their hands, which I discounted as him just giving props to the QBs, but I have to say it was not at all clear who was best QB today, though you could make strong arguments for Brown, Bachmeier, OR Jackson. On production/results alone, I think Bachmeier won the day. Brown threw a pick, but otherwise looked good. Jackson had a lot of people on their phones trying to figure out who THIS guy is and where's he been? (Where HAS he been?). He looked like a guy competing to start, not to be the best back-up. Running game and line looks improved, and I suspect Tiger will have his biggest year yet, both from his own development and all the outgoing transfers. He's also had 20 years or so to get familiar to a pretty strong looking QB.... Might be tough to win more than 3 games again this year, but AL says all the right things and brings much needed hope back to the program. Pretty cool that we'll see a Belicheck v Reich rematch in the college ranks too. :) Go Stanford!

Elway, Gerhart, Luck, McCaffrey, Love have all come in second in the Voldemort race. Stanford will have athletes in the future that will have the same potential generational talent. How can Stanford market more effectively to get the Voldemort back to Stanford.

without looking at past kickoff times my impression is that we had more late games (7pm PT or later) than either Oregon or USC which would be a big negative in terms of generating support of H.eisman voters. If you read about someone with big stats you might vote for them in the top three but if you haven't seen them play would you vote for them to win?

Otoh, if you have Western evening times, your games are pitted against news and late night TV rather than some game the Easterners care about.
Bestdes that, you move it away from as many daytime distractions (kids’ events) for those that care about the school.
I never figured out the illogic of those here that keep claiming early starts are the cire for all ills.

Thanks for the recap :) It seems that maybe the team has been buoyed by the prospect of fresh chances and energy.
