Also well deserved as both come from sports that traditionally avoid the opening ceremonies because their competitions start the first day after opening ceremony night.

The swimmers won't have that problem in 2028.
I can only guess lots of swimmers will bring out the flags for the 2028 opening ceremonies.
Also the athlete attendance rate for most countries at the opening ceremonies will likely be way down since track & field will be week #1.

USA W soccer had a great second half to win the goal medal. Girma at center back is the Bobby Orr of soccer. Excellent athlete, superb defender, fantastic long passes with accuracy and pace, and supernatural instincts and feel for the game!
Grant Fisher, two brilliant races. He lit the fuse for Team USA in the 10K and capped it off in the 5K. He is now officially an American distance running legend!

Good article about how the NCAA feeds the Olympics, with Stanford being mentioned, though the article incorrectly omits that the cuts were rescinded. But the point stands; Stanford, with the second most athletes on the games, and probably the most medals, was pretty close to cutting several sports a few years ago, and the financial situation is not going to get any better for the non-revenue sports. Last bullet:
Quote: "So that's the one concern ... are there going to be sports being dropped?" Robinson said. "Because at the end of the day, the football dog must get fed."
I think this will probably be the high water mark for Stanford in the Olympics and perhaps for NCAA current and former athletes. I can easily imagine a few years from now, Team USA will suffer because of the profesionalization of collegiate athletics.

We can add that to Stanford's total. Stanford alum Erik Shoji and starting libero was masterful on defense with 12 digs and a perfect passing record in a 3-0, straight set victory over Italy in front of 9,376 fans.
USA came into the games ranked third in the world, lost a tough match to Poland (3-2 and 15-13 in the final set), but crunched the Italian team. Here's the recap and stats:

FWLIW, I am a big fan of the USA coaching staff. John Speraw (UCLA head coach) is the head coach, and his first assistant is former Stanford player Matt Fuerbringer. Speraw and Fuerbringer played against each other years ago, and Matt got the final block on Stanford's first NCAA championship. The other assistants are Javier Weber, a top Argentine Olympian and Polish pro coach and Mike Wall who won two championships as a player at BYU.

it looks like Team Stanford wins 39 total medals!!!
Trying to convert to a "Stanford as a Country" and counting no more than one per event (e.g., for women's soccer 1 and not 3) I get 27 medals (eight gold, ten silver and nine bronze) which ties Canada for #11.

Team USA gets its 40th gold medal of the Olympics to tie China on the gold count. U.S. has 126 total medals.

the SAA says there are over 220,000 living alumni, using that number 39 medals is pretty impressive. The US won 126 medals with a population of 330 million....

USA M water polo won the bronze medal overnight, beating Hungary in "PKs"! First Olympic medal for USA M WP since 2008!
USA led 4-2, then trailed 5-4 and 8-6 before tying the game 8-8 late in the 4th quarter to force the penalty shoot-out where LSJU alum Bowen scored the decisive goal.
The USA starting goalie is from cal and despite that, he had some terrific saves. Great scoring and playing throughout the tournament by LSJU alums Hallock, Bowen, Woodhead!

Silver medal for USA W VB and it wasn't their best performance, 3-0 loss to Italy and it was never close. Plummer had an off day, just 2 of 13 in the first set, sat out the second set, started the third set and got subbed out after some rough service returns.
Still, silver medal at the Olympics is fantastic, and she'll be back for LA 2028, hopefully joined by Hentz for a gold medal run!
