didn't know where to put this but Fran Belibi's sister Hana has declared to Harvard (basketball); another sister at Harvard (track & field) and Raoul's tweet indicates Fran not only going to grad school, but Harvard Medical School. What a family (and I believe another sister too)!

Looks like Heckel teammate of Koval is in play

RE: Class of 2024+ - natflblue - 07-25-2023

UConn freshman recruit Jana El Alfy has torn her Achilles in a U19 World Cup game.  She led the tournament in scoring and made the tournament second team.  She was being counted on as a possible starter beside Aaliyah Edwards.  We back East are really nervous right now, hoping, no praying, that this isn't the start of what happened to UConn the last two seasons.  The beat goes on and best wishes to Jana as she will have her surgery at UConn Health later in the week.

Hoping for a successful surgery and a quick recovery for her!  She had a great tournament up until her injury, and she has shown she is a coach’s daughter with great instincts and super footwork for a young big!  She will be back soon and be doing great things for the Huskies in the future!

Zamerya Jones announced her top 5 and we weren’t on it.

What are your thoughts on how the demise of the PAC-12 will affect our recruiting?

1-Tara and her staff's ability to land elite or 2nd. tier players for 2024?

2-The possibility that one or more of our three freshmen might transfer?

3-The possibility that some of our sophomores and juniors may also jump ship?

4-On a positive note, would this perhaps give Tara more of an incentive to recruit high-quality HS players from overseas?

I think the uncertainty of where we will end up is bad and is hurting us right now.  However, over the long-term, I think we will be ok.   We have the unique combination of top tier world class academics and athletic scholarships and that appeal doesn’t go away.  Plus, UConn had no problems recruiting when they were in the American conference.  Tara or her successor will still schedule a top notch non-conference to make up for potentially weaker conference games.

Uncertainty doesn’t help recruiting matters. Stanford needs to find a conference home and soon. Will elite recruits chose Stanford only to end up playing in the Mountain West or some other mid level conference. I don’t see that as a selling point. Stanford WBB needs to play in a competitive conference to continue to be competitive on a national stage (Final 4s and competing for National Championships). If that doesn’t happen, I see a major drop off in Stanford’s ability to be competitive and relevant nationally.

Without a positive outcome (Big10 or Big12 invite), this could expedite Coach Vanderveers retirement even sooner. This may be her last season coaching, IMO. Things were already quickly going south with NIL and the portal, here’s one more dagger to the heart.

Stanford's WCBB as a powerhouse program is truly remarkable
for a Top 3/Top 5 university in the USA and in the world.

Of course, same can be said of its WCVB program,
even in a more superlative way.

WCBB:
15 FFs and 3 National Championships.
The longest timespan between 1st (1990) and most recent (2021) National Championship.
The longest timespan between 1st (1990) and most recent (2022) Final Four appearance.
And this is Tara VANDERVEER's baby!
And we are all blessed to be fans.
Just being nostalgic about it, which may soon come to an end....

WCVB:
23 FFs and 9 National Championships,
Oh boy! Truly amazing!

So between WCVB and WCBB,
that's a combined 38 FFs and 12 National Championships!

To be a non-Stanford graduate fan of both for 33 years is just heavenly!

This is really great news, not just because Umeh is a top player (HG#28, ASGR#15, U17 national team member). The post position was a brobdingnagian position of need for us with Betts’ transfer.   Next year (‘24-‘25 season) we only have one true post player (Iriafen).  With Umeh we have a second one and probably a different type of post vs Iriafen.  Umeh appears to be more of a bigger, stronger more physical post presence whereas Iriafen relies more on her quickness and jumping ability.

Agree.  Several other sites list Umeh at 6'4, including USA FIBA.  With such uncertainty swirling around about Stanford's future alignment, this is such encouraging news.  Tara and the Stanford brand still has the power to bring in high quality talent.

RE: Class of 2024+ - Card10Fan - 08-07-2023

Umeh commit is REALLY good news. Did anyone even have her on our radar? Here's to hoping more good news to come soon.

RE: Class of 2024+ - BosCard - 08-07-2023

I am now going to redo my psychic predictions for the class of 2024.  It will be a class of 5.

Kennedy Umeh - P (HG#28)
Joyce Edwards - F (HG#1)
Jordan Lee - G/SF (HG#9)
Mikayla Blake’s - G/SF (HG#16)
Kayleigh Heckel - PG/SG (HG#20)

I think with Umeh’s commitment it might mean that Kate Koval (another post) is headed elsewhere.  Harper Peterson has a 3/4 tweener role but that may be less of a need because Agara and Ogden fit that mould in the class ahead of her.  Shay Ijiwoye is more of a pure PG but she would overlap 2 years with Lepolo ahead of her and 3 years with Swain in 2025.  We probably need more of a shooting PG/CG like Heckel.
