ooh, would love to get Hunter. Very promising freshman year with 3 years left. Yes, please...
Same. Relative to expectations she was among the frosh that most impressed me. And anyone who steps up and is clutch in big games is A++ in my book.

Hunter is a Cal Stars alum so presumably has connections to our alums Lepolo and Demetre.

Our 2023+ recruiting thread says she (actually her dad) reported she had a Stanford offer then.

Hmm...Hunter and Heal.
Join me in a novena to St. Matthew (the apostle), the patron saint of guards. ?

More apt: a novena to St. Jude -- not to be confused with Judas Iscariot -- the patron
saint of desperate cases and lost causes.

MV, let it go. Life is challenging enough without the needlessly downtrodden entry. Let's hope for the best.

Another portal name to keep an eye on. Purdue Forward Mary Ashley Stevenson. She was Big10 Freshman of the Year. Followed on IG by Jeanette and Coach McCall. She follows the Stanford WBB, Stanford University and Stanford athletics account. Could be someone we are targeting. Just announced her intent to transfer in last couple days.

With all the academic challenges in getting players to Stanford WBB in a rapidly changing WCBB landscape in recent years, and sheer hard luck narrowly missing out on some talented guards in particular, I don't think one could wish for a better pair to add to the Stanford backcourt from the portal than Heal and Hunter! Fingers crossed!
I read Hunter visited TCU, but with Hailey Van Lith just joining Maddie Scherr and Taylor Bigby in their commitments from the portal, let's hope that lessens their chances.

Stevenson went by Mary Ashley Groot in high school and was one of the earlier names to emerge on the national radar from the c/o 2023 (one of 20 c/o 2023's invitees at the USA U16 Team trials and one of 17 at USA U17 trials). Finished high school ranked #97 by ESPN Hoopgurlz but was as high as top 40 earlier on.
Just learning that her father, Gary, was actually the president of Pac-12 Enterprises when the Pac-12 Network launched and was hired by David Stern to help build the WNBA's business plan! Currently Deputy Commissioner of Major League Soccer, has held many other major positions in the professional sports world.
I recall Mary Ashley was one of the first ranked recruits from outside California that Lindsay Gottlieb was able to get to take an official visit to USC, so perhaps they will be in the mix again. Also took O-visits to Princeton, Harvard, and her ultimate choice Purdue. Also had offers from Miami, Clemson, Michigan, and Arizona. Said to be an excellent student.

I hope for the best when it comes to recognizing an attempt at humor by a poster invoking traditional Catholic patron saint monikers and applying one of them to basketball affairs. My comment was not intended to be taken seriously.

I think that the experience of SG Lou Lopez SENECHAL of being a UConn transfer from Fairfield
during the 2022-2023 season, then excelling during her extra covid year, and subsequently being drafted
5th overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft, also weighed heavily on CHEN's decision to transfer to UConn.
And, of course, being mentored by the soon-to-be all-time winningest coach in USA college basketball history.

I guess Caitlin Clark is right. Yukon is everyone's dream school.
Can't help wondering if she will get much playing time.

How many did Geno have in his rotation this year? Six?

However, any athlete worth her salt thinks she is good enough to start and will out compete everyone else. Finding players who want an easier path to start on paper is a great way to wind up with a team that isn't very good. Which all begs the question of why portal players are so desirable. I mean those unhappy with playing time, not the established superstars.
It took me a minute to remember where I'd seen analytics on this and I found it in my other alumni magazine.
Portal Analytics
Undergrads including basketball players and MBA students at Scheller College of Business found that statistically, transfers do not typically improve their performance after jumping schools and the schools that most used the portal between 2018 and 2022 did not experience a statistically significant improvement in performance. The main takeaway: "If you can recruit a good class coming in [out of high school], it tends to bode well for the success of the team."

And I’ll also go w Skim Milkey showing the tree so hoping for a portal announcement.
