Tug of War, definitely. Polo itself.  That's two. We don't count the sports that came back.

The remaining eight are:

1. Croquet. Only played in 1900. France won all the medals. Three French women competed, thereby the answer to an interesting "when did women first compete in the Olympics?" They had just one spectator, and Englishman who traveled from Nice.

2. Cricket. Only played in 1900, may have been played as a demonstration sport in the original 1896 Olympics. England beat France (French team was made up of Englishmen from the British embassy in Paris).

3. Jeu de Paume. Only played in 1908, literally means "palm game" originally a cross between handball and tennis played in a room. Ultimately played with gloves, then bats and finally rackets. Sometimes called "real tennis." American Jay Gould II won the gold in 19808. Annual amateur world championship held every September since 1740. Oldest active trophy in international sport.

4. Pelota. Basque Pelota, only played in 1900 is similar to Jai Alai. Only played in 1900, Spain beat France. Was also a demonstration sport in 1924, 1968 and 1992.

5. Roque. A hard surface form of croquet. Only played at 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, all three medalists were American.

6. Racqets. Only played in 1908. Early form of racketball. Great Britain won all the medals, John Jacob Astor being one of them. Games to 15, best of five wins.

7. Lacrosse. Played in 1904 and 1908. Canadians won both times. In 1904, Shamrock defeated the American team. Same year, there was a bronze medal winning team from Canada consisting of Mohawk indigenous people. In 1908, Canada defeated Britain. Notable act of Olympic sportsmanship, when Frank Dixon of Canada broke his stick, his British opponent R. G. W. Martin offered to withdraw until a new stick was found.

8. Motor boating. Only played in 1908. Demonstration sport in 1900. Three categories; eight-meter, 60 foot and open class.  40 nautical miles on a specific course.  A Brit, Thomas Thornycraft won gold in two of the three races. 44 years later, aged 70, he was on the British yachting team at the 1952 Olympics. France won the other gold. Average speed, 19 mph.

Yes and yes.  Hornsby in 1922 and 1925;  Williams in 1942 and 1947.
Two more (one in the Negro League and one in the Eastern Colored League/Negro League).

Josh Gibson?

Yes, 1936 and 1937 Negro National League.  Missing one, not Nap Lajoie (who won it in 1901).
Yastremski was close but not quite the lowest; he hit .326 in 1967.
Cap Anson didn't win the triple crown.

And card crimson, I wasn't trying to be sly; my source (baseball-reference.com) included the Negro Leagues.

And Mick, that is an impressive bit of trivia. I remember seeing the list once and thinking “never heard of half of these”.  I thought there was a weird aquatic sport too, but maybe not.

Lowest average was Robinson (nice job Terry) in 1966 with a .316 average
Fewest home runs was Paul Hines, in 1878, with 4.
Fewest RBI was Jimmie Foxx, in 1933, with 32.

The last of the multiple crown winners was Oscar Charleston, in the 1921 Negro National League and the 1924 and 1925 Eastern Colored League.

To revive a dying thread, pun intended, I posted last week about the unfortunate shooting of Spider Sabich (a former coach of mine) by Claudine Longet. 

Who is the only MLB player to be murdered in season? What were the circumstances? 

Just to be clear, I never played baseball beyond the minor league level in little league.

Still looking for the triple crown winner with the fewest total wins on the season. Come on, this should be an easy one. . ..

Correct. Shot in the temple by a jealous husband. Turned out the woman was a friend of a friend whom he only met 20 minutes before the shooting and he was simply giving the two women a ride home. The shooter was found not guilty by reason of insanity (he claimed his wife's infidelity drove him crazy), and spent seven months in a psych hospital before he was released. By all accounts, Bostock seemed like a wonderful human being. Tragedy.
