I read that article. Have to admit that I was more than a little confused.  It has nothing to do with the fact that the SF Bay Area has 8x the number of Japanese residents than does the Chicago metropolitan area. He did mention the number of homeless, but Chicago has nearly 4x more than does SF. And with the greatest of respect, if I were a family man,  I would probably avoid Chicago, a/k/a America's Murder Capital (heavyweight division) with 797 homicides in calendar 2021, than San Francisco with its 56.

I also read the article and came away unconvinced; I am skeptical about him signing with Chicago simply based on Yu Darvish telling him he enjoyed playing there. To me the article was reminiscent of the rationalizations that P.R. firms put out after the fact. The crime problem in San Francisco is real, but with $85 million you will probably find ways to feel safe.

There was nothing in the article that mentioned SF matching (or attempting to exceed) Chicago's offer. I don't doubt that there were legitimate non-economic factors involved, but if SF had offered $20 mm/year would he still have signed with the Cubs? I'm pretty sure that if SF had made such an offer (or at the very least made the same offer as Chicago) that the same P.R. people that fed Baggerly the other material would have included that information. The fact that SF making a similar offer to Chicago has never been leaked indicates to me that such an offer was never made, rendering the other stuff moot.

11 game, 4 city road trip and they go 8-3. Pretty decent performance, don't ya think?

Not bad, probably not good enough for Lex. LOL.

Giants writers are pretty soft.  Rarely ask tough questions.

Baggarly has a reputation for being a straight shooter.  Heck, he was ostracized by a number of Giants players for a period of time during his tenure with CSN Bay Area for what the players felt was unwarranted criticism.  I’ll take his comments (that SF was willing to pay what was necessary) at face value.  The problem was location, location, location.

Gee, I guess no FA hitters want to play in SF…..

The article was basically a P.R. piece justifying why Suzuki signed with Chicago instead of San Francisco. But there was no mention of an offer from SF, which of course would be highly relevant, in fact it would be the key piece of information. If Baggerly reported that the Giants offered $85 million but Suzuki chose the Cubs, or even better that the Giants offered more than $85 million but that Suzuki still chose the Cubs, then that would be meaningful, because it would be a message that the Giants did all they could but that non-economic factors prevailed. As it is, absent reference to a Giants offer the narrative of the article falls into the same category as Mike Hampton choosing the Rockies because of the Denver school system or Gerrit Cole proclaiming that he signed with the Yankees because they were his favorite childhood team.

If the Giants had made a competitive offer you can be sure that it would have been leaked to Baggerly, to strengthen his thesis. The fact that no explicit Giants offer has been reported indicates that either there was no offer or that it was inferior to the Cubs offer (and therefore best left unmentioned), so any fluff about the Suzukis loving Chicago more than California being the overriding consideration needs to be taken with several grains of salt in light of the Cubs obviously offering more money than the Giants.

P.S. I'm not questioning Baggerly's integrity, but being ostracized by players doesn't support his credibility with regard to this piece, since this was a defense of management/ownership, not a player criticism.

Bring back Glenn Dickey and Lowell Cohn...

And Giants on pace to win 114. Second biggest run differential in the majors. They're 12-5. And 11 of their 17 games have been on the road. Oakland A's tomorrow.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Phogge - 04-25-2022

Jeez, I thought that everyone knew that Suzuki doesn’t abide with coconut oil.

Taylor Rashi (26) 6.2/0ER/3BB/11K

Sacto... David Villar (25) 67AB/.286/5HR/17RBI/11BB/20K
Raymond Espina (30) 12.2/6BB/22K

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Giants - 04-26-2022

Effective 5-2, MLB has changed the maximum number of pitchers allowed on the roster from 13 to 14.  The  maximum of 13 will take effect on May 30.

The roster total of 26 is still effective 5-2.  I would imagine the Giants will take advantage of this rule change and keep 14 pitchers and 12 hitters.

My guess - Beede and Vosler will be sent packing.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - BostonCard - 04-26-2022

Giants now on pace for *does math* 117 wins.  Rodon is on Pace for 30 wins and a Cy Young, LOL.

Slater hit a home run and had three RBIs.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Giants - 04-26-2022

The most amazing stat to me:

Since the beginning of last season, the Giants are 120-60 in the regular season.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - old spanish trail - 04-26-2022

Two more HRs tonight. Flores and Slater both hit 3 run HR's. Giants lead the majors in HR's I think.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Phogge - 04-26-2022

Flores knocked in four. Staff has 15k’s. Joc does nothing and they still roll over the A’s.

Diamondbacks spot the evil empire 3 in the first but give up no more to knock the Bums out of first place.

I had Rodon going 25-0 but I’ll take 30-0.

Fidel Castro strikes out the side.
