Lara Somfai, Nunu Agara, Mary Ashley Stevenson, Harper Peterson, and Carly Amborn. Gone. Who is next?
Kate has failed. It's time for a new coach who can navigate the pressures of the portal and NIL and get us back to competing for the national championship.

really unfortunate we couldn't muddle through for a year or 2. betts and rice were only so so as freshman; look at them now as seniors. our 3 freshman could have been really good in a year and dominant in 3 years.

It's over. I bet we see more in the portal. Once an exodus starts, players see the team will not be good and add to the outgoing hoard. Probably too late to save things even with a coaching change right away. I still wish they would fire Paye. Crappy coaching, as we could all see, with players so unhappy they leave en masse shows that she doesn't have what it takes, not even close. It was always going to be a tough uphill battle to stay a top 10 team with money and the portal the keys to winning. If Paye did better we could have had a top 25 team that made the NCAAs for the next few years, giving the program time to adjust to the new era. Instead Paye tanked the program to the point it needs a total rebuild. In this era there is a good chance a rebuild doesn't get us back to relevance. It was fun while it lasted.
As for me, I no longer invest emotionally in college athletics. I don't blame players for getting the most money they can. That is the way of the world. I still can't hack the sad fact that nobody, but nobody cares all that much about loyalty to a school or a team. Coaches are in it for a job. Now players are too. They all come and go so fast we never get to know them much or see them develop individually or as a team. Or we watch them develop, get good and then leave to play their best ball elsewhere. So what of fans, what do we do? If players and coaches don't really care about the team aside from their own personal interests, why should we care about the team or about them? I say the heck with all of it. I will follow out of curiosity and habit only.

I will no longer go to games. The team Kate coached was unwatchable most of the time, and I blame Kate for that. With so many top recruits, we should have been so much better. I have emailed the AD. Others should too.

While I think Coach Paye should be replaced, I think that’s only part of the problem. In the NIL/transfer portal era, good players like Agara / Somfai want to start, be on a final four team, and get paid. Benchwarmers also want to play on a championship team and they want significant minutes. The vast majority of players won’t get these things and so they will transfer every year. This transfer/implosion happens to a lot of teams now (eg Iowa State and Tennessee). It’s just the mercenary nature of the game. And Stanford will always lose that game because a lot of transfers don’t qualify and our process is so long and arduous. I’m afraid the era of Stanford relevance in women’s basketball (and men’s basketball and football) is over. We should just accept Ivy League status and relevance in country club sports.

I have not been a fan of Betts, but I watched her play today, and she deserved the MVP. She got the championship that Stanford could not give her.

Those that were expected to enter the transfer portal have already announced.. hopefully that’s it, but we do have to anxiously wait about 2-3 more weeks. Hopefully, that’s it for now and the culture for SWBB can improve drastically for the better. It’s a sad day when we have to hope we can have a team next season.

yes NIL rough but the contrast here vs UCLA and their willingness to stick together out of confidence in one another and their capable AND caring coach is unbelievable. Suspect I am done too, as someone said earlier it's tough if only the fans care and not the coach or AD.

Ucla had at least 4 transfers, L Betts, Kneepkens (Utah), Leger-Walker (Wazzu) and Dugalic (Oregon). I think Rice and G Jaquez played all 4 years at Ucla.
Putting aside whether LSJU/coach Tara could have kept L Betts, could LSJU have attracted 3 transfers of the quality of Kneepkens, L-W and Dugalic and gotten them enough NIL $ and through the admissions office over the past few years?

Maybe Stanford couldn’t have competed for a National championship but so sad that it may be competing for fastest fall from grace.

RE: Grading Kate Paye's Performance -
BosCard - 04-05-2026
I agree we need a new coach but I don’t think this is 100% Coach Paye’s fault. it’s also a product of the mercenary NIL/transfer every year system. I think Coach Paye learned the Betts lesson which is if you don’t play your superstar frosh and cater to their whims, they will leave. So Somfai got to start, play lots of minutes and didn’t get yanked when she jacked ill-advised threes. She maybe was a diva and not the best teammate as evidenced by her abandoning the team during the post-season. Maybe Stevenson, Peterson and Amborn are like why is that bad behavior being rewarded and I’m stuck at the end of the bench? And Coach Paye is like if I don’t play her she’ll pull a Betts. So that trio is unhappy and leaves and Somfai leaves anyway seeking more money elsewhere. It’s a really nasty system that makes the college basketball product hard to stomach.

kneepkens had a 3.9 gpa at utah before transferring to ucla, leger walker had a 3.9 gpa at washington state before transferring to ucla. dugalic had a 3.4 at oregon, which is not a slam dunk, but nor is it disqualifying. it's not grades that are limiting our transfers in.
how about nneka to lead the search and, when she is ready, to serve as general manager?

I agree. It's definitely not grades that prevent Stanford sports from using the portal like all the other schools. It's the fact that Stanford allows its administration to impose unnecessary extra hurdles on admissions that go far beyond what their competition requires, and far beyond reason. Whereas the programs we want to compete against can get all the athletes they want into school whenever the NCAA allows it, and they're willing to be aggressive with NIL, Stanford arrogantly adds unnecessary hurdles, refuses to max NIL deals, and turns its nose up to upperclassmen transfers in, which is suicide in this day and age. Until I see Stanford start to enroll high-skilled upperclassmen transfers from the portal, I'll know that the Stanford administration is still refusing to adapt to the current environment. Before I start blaming any coaches, I'm blaming the administration for refusing to step up to NIL and admission realities. We can still require good grades and for student athletes to attend classes, but there are plenty of high-talent transfers with good grades. It's all the other arrogant extra red tape and restrictions that we allow the administration to continue imposing that''s really killing Stanford revenue sports.
RE: Grading Kate Paye's Performance -

Does Stanford still require a certain number of units be earned at Stanford in order to be awarded an undergraduate degree? Something like half the units required to graduate? If so, wouldn't that work against getting upperclassmen transfers?

I ask the questions below with curiosity and no informed opinion on the matter.
What are some of those unnecessary hurdles? And to clarify, are you saying that the actual academic standards are not too high, rather our admissions system is too inflexible?
Clearly some transfers are making it through the filter so it is possible. Is the effort too high and only some are willing to make it? Or does timing work for some but not others?

Yeah. The restrictive Stanford admission timing windows and extra red tape getting athletes admitted into graduate programs suggest that the Stanford administration doesn't prioritize revenue sports success, or may view this difficulty as adding to Stanford's selectivity. They also don't seem willing to drop brobdingnagian NIL cash on key targets. Obviously, some transfers have navigated the gauntlet, but the proof is in the pudding that other schools were able to reload through the portal, while Stanford only gets dribs and drabs. Cori Close could get whoever she wanted in on short notice when she had urgent needs, and in fact she upgraded her team. David Shaw, Tara, and their successors couldn't. I'll know Stanford has fixed this when we start seeing high-impact transfers in. All the rest is excuses.

Thank you. I have not posted much the last few years because I can no longer attend in person. I don't find the games beautiful to watch, unfortunately for me. The game has gotten more physical and less free flowing over the years. I did enjoy watching the Valkyries last season and other WNBA teams. I will do some of that this year. At least the WNBA has rules so that everyone is not a free agent each and every season so the rosters have some stability. The quality of play is much better, as it should be. Just bugs me that some college kids who will never do much in the WNBA get paid more than pros who are much better at basketball. 300+ teams fighting for players and boosters with bucks have created a strange system that way overvalues most of these college athletes. Everyone also seems to forget they get scholarships worth almost 100k a year at some schools. Sophs in HS have agents now. I have lost the love, probably for good.
