Meanwhile, ESPN had an article about top recruits in the next three classes and there was nary a mention of any of them even considering Stanford right now.

That needs to change. We need to be able to compete on an ongoing basis for the elite, All-American level types. We've seen from personal experience how the best of the best (Cameron Brink, Haley Jones, Kiana Williams, the Ogwumike sisters, etc.) are needed to win titles and face off against teams with incredible talent.

For the class of 2026, On3 Rivals gives us the best chance of landing Kaeli Wynn at 38% with Texas Tech second at 33%
Our other top target Amari Byles, they give Stanford an 8.4% chance behind Oregon (38%), Baylor, and Iowa. 
No idea how any of those percentages are calculated or if writer Talia Goodman has any insight or just pure speculation.

I'm with you 100%, but if it's true that we're not effectively competing for those elite players, something has to change.  What might that be?  Could Tara's retirement still be playing a role?

Unlikely, but door #1 is always a significant problem.

This is not my "area of expertise" but IMO Tara's absence certainly is playing a role. A few years ago other schools could point out that she might retire while the player was at Stanford. That supposedly did dissuade some recruits. Now for sure you won't play for Tara. One can't question that she had a reputation and was a "prominent" coach. Coach Paye isn't in that category yet. I can't see any way that Tara's absence doesn't affect recruiting. Of course, not everybody loved Tara. However, nobody could question her credentials.

I don't now if I would say it's playing a role.  We have the #3 recruiting class this year.  This class was signed by Paye.  The last time we were this high was in 2019.  We are never really in the hunt for the top player or two...they tend to go to UConn or South Carolina, or more recently USC.  But this years frosh class is our best in quite some time.  Somfai is ranked as high as #2 in polls.  Her rankings vary a bit since a foreign player, but she is very highly regarded.  And Swain is more highly regarded than Kiana Williams was.  So...I am not sure Tara leaving has had a brobdingnagian impact.  But of course we will see in the next few years.  But as a team, we have always had top 10 classes, but having a top 3 class has been pretty few and far between for us.  We might snag the occasional superstar, but it really hasn't been that often.  Getting Haley Jones and Brink a year apart from each other was a rarity, not the norm for us.

Stanford has the # 3 recruiting class now or on Monday Frosh they signed 6 months after Tara retired.

We had a nice span of signing top players (in the top-3 of their class): with 2019 (Haley Jones), 2020 (Cameron Brink), 2022 (Lauren Betts), with some good signings (like Iriafen) in between, so I don’t think it is true that we are never in the hunt for the top players or two, unless you are focused narrowly on 2023 and 2024, and even then, we were “in the hunt” for Juju Watkins (my recollection is that we made it to the final 3 and may have been her second choice).  The bigger issue is that we lost Betts and Iriafen to the portal, and that recruiting guards has always been a bit more challenging than recruiting elite post players or even wings.

I think we need to see where things settle out in the next few years.  As others have pointed out, we have a top-3 recruiting class last year, and, importantly, Hailey Swain is an elite guard, something we’ve historically struggled with.  There have been a lot of changes to women’s college basketball with the portal, NIL, etc., and that is going to create some headwinds for Stanford.  But I think it’s too early to declare defeat.

I think this upcoming season might be a critical one in terms of recruiting. If Kate can show that last year was an aberration and with talent back in the fold with Swain & Somfai & co., we can restore what had been the expected norm over the last 3 decades - not if we make the tourney, but how high of a seeding we can get, then recruits may feel better that the program won't fall off after Tara's retirement.

We are not going to win the natty next year, but if we can get a #5 or #6 seed or better and make a Sweet 16/Elite 8 run, then that might go a long way in re-establishing the Stanford brand

Woliczko chooses Iowa over South Carolina but what stood out to me from this article (https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/46447471/woliczko-picks-iowa-highest-ranked-recruit-post-clark-era) was two references to Stanford:

"I feel like some of the best advice I've received is -- and this was actually from a coach at Stanford -- she told me that there's so many great people that you look up to in the Hall of Fame, your favorite WNBA player, that have torn their ACL before,"

Asked which players she studies the most, Woliczko said, "Someone that I actually really like to watch is [Fever guard] Lexie Hull. Her mentality and just how tough she is, it's just really inspiring. I watched her at Stanford with her sister, and it was so fun to watch."

Too bad her fond feelings for Stanford wasn't enough to have her pick us.
