With all due respect, I'm going with (2). As not infrequently happens [in many sports], the team that takes down a prohibitive favorite in the SEMI-finals has a tough time getting it together again right away to actually win the whole thing. Texas [and, certainly, Hammer] looked a little flat. Not to take anything at all away from our guys, but they had the advantage of being able to still aim for THE peak, while Texas was looking at one MORE peak.
If we hadn't played our way into 6th on Monday, the roles might very well have been reversed. Conrad Ray knows what he's doing... :-)

Right, but if we'd just stayed put in second place or dropped a bit to third, we still would have been in the opposite half of the draw. We didn't need to flirt with missing the top 8!

The PGA Championship was played as match play when I was a kid. The Ryder cup is great but the possibility of Brooks Koepka vs Dustin for a major is thrilling.

I think the NCAA has settled on a pretty great format for the golf championships, with both the stroke play and match play portions. And it seems right and familiar to crown the individual champion based on stroke play while using stroke play to winnow the team field down to 8 and then switching to match play the rest of the way.
The NCAA doesn't always make the right call, so I'm glad they settled on this format. Great drama on every day of the tournament.

I bet Oklahoma State doesn't like this format right now. We didn't like it the year we won the stroke play portion to get the #1 seed and then lost in the match play semis.
I think it's weird that almost all of the tournaments during the year are stroke play, but the national champion is determined via head-to-head match play. It would be like March Madness switching to head-to-head games of HORSE between two teams at the elite eight rather than playing a regular game.

To me it makes sense for the team competition. It takes a complete team to win it. If one guy is a -10 and the other four on his team are scratch golfers, then their team would be -10 in stroke play. A team that had five -1 golfers would lose to them in stroke play by 5 strokes, but would beat them 4-1 in match play.

I'm fine with match play and think it makes spectating a whole lot more fun. However, I think stroke play with cumulative scores is clearly much more of a "team" concept. An analogy would be a 4 x 400 relay race where the first three of a relay team's runners each complete their laps 1 second faster than the other team's runners, while the fourth gets beaten by five seconds by his/her counterpart. Viewed in "match play" terms, that team wins 3-1. On the other hand, viewed in "stroke play" terms, that team loses by two seconds.
It seems to me that the total TEAM score in stroke play represents more of what the players accomplished as a whole unit [i.e., a team] than does adding up each individual player vs. player outcome as is the case for match play.

What is our incoming class like? He chance we have a couple like those Freshman at OSU or Texas? But then my guess is we get some improvement from those coming back, but how much is something we will have to wait and see.

I think both points of view have merit. However, stroke play is in a way "pure" golf, you against yourself and the course. There is no particular individual you are competing with, no strategy except to go as low as you can. One might argue that match play should be approached the same way, but having your opponent right there with you makes a difference. You may choose to lay up instead of going for it because you think he is temporarily rattled and you can beat him on this hole without taking much risk. You may relax and just go through the motions on a hole you are pretty sure you have already lost. Lots of things are different in match play. It may be said it is not "pure" golf, but it sure can be interesting!

I love the hybrid format of the championships.
But what amazes me most is that 48 hours ago we weren't sure if Stanford was even going to make it to match play. They were in a complete meltdown and if it weren't for some clutch pars & a few birdies down the stretch they might have been coming home with their tails between their legs on Monday night.
Congrats to Coach Ray and the team. We can worry about next year later. Right now that's a school record-tying SIX nattys this year, and who knows we might not be done yet on that front...
At some point in the future I think there's a worthwhile discussion about the site selection, but for now let's just relish in what was a really amazing championship run that started a few months ago and just kept rolling.

a Brit (from Yorkshire, my old turf).
He looks like no more than
a contender for our fifth spot.
(Figuring Shimp, Snyder, Daulet, Nate Menon, and Freddie Lee
as the most probably 1-5.
Just not enough fire power there.
Vilips arrives next fall.
The year after that, with the arrival of last year's Junior US Amateur champ,
we could have another very good team.
Vilips could be sensational
and Thornbjornsen should be no worse than a strong three.
