The UWM women win the very weak Horizon league most years - 8 in a row now. And then lose in the first round of the tournament. To your point, it’s the only sport UW Milwaukee is consistently good at.

Stanford gives up a goal I believe 39 seconds in. Smith fails to contain the cross and 3 players marking nobody give up the goal. Plenty of time, but not a good start. Smith remains a poor 1v1 defender.

Wild Cal Poly tackle on Nguyen there but she looks ok. Really obvious card.
Not a great half but hey they are ahead. Some concerning trends carried over from the ACC tournament though.
- Nguyen’s corners have been far better then Bhuta’s.
- Boamah was a big step up at LB.
- Again not enough from L/RF
- Aikey not sharp so far though she can easily conjure up a a couple of goals even on an off day.
Does Cal Poly try to tie this up or are they ok with just losing by less?

Stanford looks flat, or Cal Poly is better than their seed. In past years I've been disappointed by how the attack has lacked creativity or risk-taking, resulting in seemingly endless back passes and possession seemingly for possession sake. In comparison, this year the team was more forward-looking and adventurous on attack. However, tonight seems like years past.
Only Y-Lay Nguyen (and Jung in a brief stint) seem to be playing well. Aikey has been very quiet.
For a time this year the narrative has been that the offense is amazing and deep, whereas the defense was uncertain. I believe that narrative has been proven wrong. In my opinion the defense is solid, the midfield is the team's strength, and apart from Aikey on a normal day, the offense is the weak link. At this point you dance with the one who brought you, but the trial of Boamah at wing that came out against ND last week might need to be resurrected in later rounds .

And now 3-1. Kitahata finally got a decent cross off that wasn’t blocked. Aikey gets blocked point blank and Kohler sneaks in the loose ball. Pretty hard for Cal Poly now.
That is almost certainly not offsides. No idea how you don’t review that. And finally they do. Ball coming off the goalie doesn’t reset offsides.
And somehow that ends as a Stanford handball.

Stanford wins 3-1. Bottom 3 or 4 performance on the season today. Fortunately Cal Poly didn’t have much after the first minute goal.
- not much changed from my first half comments.
- Boamah opened up space for Kitahata which helped her in the second half.
- Aikey might not have scored even if it went 900 minutes. Just an off day.
- breaking down a low block is hard especially if you aren’t sharp with your passing. This team is best when they can press you unless you are a UVA or ND level team and can actually play out of it.
- crossing was mostly terrible today.
- Cal Poly still created a few scary moments even though they barely got forward. I am sticking with the defense is the concern.
- but Klinger and Kitahata are definitely in a slump right now.

I was at Cagan, sadly just the first time all season I've seen the team play in person. Cal Poly probably isn't the best opponent, but I thought LSJU actually looked pretty good!
Posession may indeed be an overrated stat but the first half was like an LSJU passing and shooting drill in Cal Poly's half and penalty box. The long goal by # 21 reminded me of Teresa Noyola. It should've been at least 5-1 but the ref waved off a goal and then #12 (?) hit the post and almost volleyed in the rebound.

So far, 8 ACC teams have advanced, with Notre Dame about to make it 9; while favored in most games, still impressive that the ACC is undefeated in the first round.

Florida State 4-0 over Stamford
North Carolina 3-1 over 3 seed Tennessee

Not many upsets this year in round 1 though there were a few additional close calls - Colorado, BYU for example.
Tennessee is the biggest loss though really not that surprising - see above. The real surprise for me is Lipscomb beating 6 seed MSU. The only other losing seed was Georgia and they were just an 8 seed and up against a big 10 team in OSU. Power conferences dominated as is typical, and you really don’t want an unseeded ACC or big 10 team as your opening game. The next round will really start to show though if the Big 10 and ACC are dominant again this year.
