Giants trade Dubon to Houston for switch hitting minor league catcher. Hitting numbers in minors bleak. But I suspect he’s good defensively. And perhaps he walks…..

Called up Donovan Watson. (I call him “Mellow Yellow”) I would not be surprised if they release La Stella and just eat the contract. He was defensively below average before the injuries. Now I have to believe his range is nill. He can DH. But between Ruf, Flores Peterson and Gonzalez they are fine there.

I thought because of option issues Gonzalez might go down - even though he’s been terrific at the plate. (Not so good defensively). But I don’t know if he has options. And he’s a keeper. Another great Zaidi acquisition.

There are very few catchers who can hit. Papierski has a .358 career OBP in the minors (.379 last year in AAA) so he's not a total zero.

Dubon was going to be put on waivers once LaStella returns. Since he had no options left, he would have been picked up by someone for nothing more than a small sum of cash. Therefore, I think obtaining a catcher who hit .246 in his last full season (2021 in the PCL) was a reasonable deal. The Giants are thin at C at the top of their minor league system (prior to the trade, SF had no minor league catchers on the 40 man roster).

Unless there are any further setbacks, LaStella will rejoin the team in Denver. The Dubon trade foreshadowed his return.

To make room on the roster, look for a pitcher to be sent out. SF currently has 14 pitchers and are allowed a max. of 13 effective later this month.

Gonzalez and Marte optioned to Sacramento.

Llovera and LaStella recalled from Sacramento.

This puts SF at 14 pitchers and 12 position players.

I think Gonzalez will be back soon….

Me too. I wasn't initially excited about Gonzalez, but, yes, he can hit. New question, can he field? :)

I has missed this, but the Giants traded Alex Blandino to the Mariners. Hopefully he does better in their organization and resuscitates his career.

Was watching a bit of Astros play Red Sox last night before rain delay, and saw the Astros with a Catcher hitting .061 in their starting lineup. Their regular Catcher is batting .113 with a .438 OPS. The Yankees have the best record in MLB and their primary Catcher is hitting .161 with a paltry .424 OPS. It's almost like Catchers are the new Pitchers for hitting prowess, relative to all position players.

Joey Bart has a .178 BA with a respectable .722 OPS.

With last night's outburst, Curt Casali: .298 BA and an impressive .909 OPS. Hard to believe a 33 yo Catcher with a career .229 BA and .724 OPS is going to maintain those numbers, but I don't think Bart is any sort of weak link for the Giants relative to MLB Catching production in 2022.

He was doing well in Sacramento, .310 with power and an over-1.000 OPS. But that's the PCL, who knows how he'll do at MLB level. Hopefully close to his career .270 level.

Correct re: 13/13…

I’d like to see Gonzalez back as well. Perhaps once they finish playing in Denver, they can cut back on the number of pitchers on the roster…..

There is still a Home Plate Ump, Bob. He just gets told if the pitch is a strike or a ball and then says what he hears. Home plate blue is there for timeouts, balk calls, plays at plate, to break up mound meetings, and is one of the crew who adjudicates the playing of the game.
