I'll start by saying that this year has been an unmitigated disaster with the team not living anywhere near their own expectations.

I'll follow that by saying that I'm not as discouraged by yesterday's performance:
- The team fought through when needed and of massive proportions, Ingram is beginning to show up
- The defense on the second half was very strong
- Three pointers are starting to drop
- I'm really hoping O'Connel is slowly starting to turn a corner and gaining a little confidence, not being completely afraid to take a shot, I believe point guard play is the key culprit (with many other contributing components, granted) for the dismal performances this year
- Keefe being out is giving much needed playing time to that outstanding but ridiculously underdeveloped talent in Reynaud
- Somewhat related, is Haase finally slowling down on the carrousel substitutions

Baby steps..., I hope we can keep the streak going through the weekend

Agree
We barely beat a small school (1600 undergrads) with significant losing record and horrible road record,
that is ranked 282 on the NET rankings (we are ranked 125)
If we were really playing well enough to generate optimism, we would have buried them in a runaway.

What a joke that game was. Why can't Haase get his team to play with intensity against such a patsy from the get go? 

Talk about playing down to the level of the competition! 

One thing that bugs me is that Haase's team gets a "W" added to its record for playing such a supreme marshmallow midseason. Pathetic. 

Our wins this season have come against the following powerhouses:

Pacific
Cal Poly
Florida State
Green Bay
Loyola of Chicago
Oregon State
Oregon
Chicago State

The FSU and Oregon wins are the only ones worth mentioning. We are light years away from the glory days of Stanford basketball. I noticed that the attendance last night was an anemic 2400. Not a surprise.

For sure less than 2000.  My section had only 20, for example.

This was a strange game.  Chicago started out shooting lights out, even when guarded closely.  Everything they threw up went in the hoop.  They also were playing tight defense, disrupting our entry passes to the post.  

In the first half, I wouldn't say that we were playing poorly.  Our shooting percentage was in the 40s.  It was just that Chicago was making a high percentage of their shots despite our tight defense.

At the start of the second half our shooting was cold and we started something like 1-6.  Chicago built their lead up to 12 early in the 2nd half.

Then, all of the sudden, it was like someone flipped a switch.  Chicago couldn't make a basket and Spencer Jones couldn't miss from outside the arc.  We clawed our way back, took the lead, and never gave it up.  We won by 7.

If you just look at the box score, you would think that we won this game easily.  We finished better in every stat except for FT % (75.9 to 76.5) and turnovers (12 to 7).  We out rebounded them 41 to 27.

Maybe this total collapse in the last 10 minutes of the game is a pattern for this Chicago team and the reason they are 5-17.  They certainly have real talent on their roster.  Cardet scored 33 points!

Long time observer here - old enough to have watched BOTH Keefe's run the floor at Maples.

I was pleasantly surprised by Stanford at last week's Oregon and Oregon St games, easily the best games I've seen from Stanford this season.  Oregon was athletic and talented with at least one likely NBA talent.  Sure they are down from past years but the Stanford I saw earlier this season would have been rolled by those guys.  Instead we led wire to wire and survived a late in the game run.  

Stanford players didn't shoot well late in the game after a hot first half but we contested against a muscular Oregon squad in the paint throughout, finished athletically near the rim, and (in general) played solid defense.  Side note, I'm not sure why Haase continues to stick with zone for so much of each game given we seem to have the tools to play man to man.  We lose shooters as they play across our zone and leave lanes open on switches.  I'd like to see more nose-to-nose man defense but maybe that's the Montgomery era fan in me.

Negatives? Stanford's parts look better than their sum and we don't have a solid identity offensively.  That's on the coaches.  However there are some good pieces on the floor to build on.  It wouldn't surprise me if February results are better than January.

Espn says 92%chance of beating Cal. You should have no trouble. Cal wont shoot the lights out again.

IMO 92% is wildly inflated.
Our Defense specializes in being "polite" and tends to bring out big shooting nights for other teams,
or a season's best from one of their players.
Latest example just on Weds where Wesley Cardet Jr had his top scoring game of season against us.

He did have a greatly improved game.  Solid.
But I contend he could still take some toughness and intimidation lessons, especially on defense, from Cam Brink.
When she's on, you can see the tentativeness of the other team anytime they get deep in the paint.
For every shot she blocks, which are a lot, she intimidates and affects 2 or 3 others.
Against Chicago State their biggest player getting any significant playing time was 6'6" 210.
Reynaud coulda been more a beast, if got something more of whatever Cam is running on....

I wouldn't give our team anything more than 50/50 against any conference opponent no matter how bad.

That seems to be the theme running through all of Haas's teams.  We have had good pieces.  We've never put it all together.
