RBruno gets out of the 8th.
Then Eddie “parks” it and we’re up 17-12.
Anyone ever see twin Jaden Bruno (R/R) pitch? Shared genes, you’d think there’d be something there…

if you didn't feel good about our pitching, don't look

Can we all agree that Braden Montgomery’s pitching career is over?

This game is getting ridiculous

Might as well bring in Quinn Matthews.

Can someone please provide a status update? Game tracker appears to have frozen from all the runs.

Yes, bottom of 9th, bases loaded. Stanford just walked in a Santa Clara run.
Edit: Stanford wins finally.

So we’re up 20-17?

20-17 final score. Stanford wins

I was worried we were going to lose this one… 20-17 it is, and we used 10 pitchers. For a 9-inning game. The first 2 didn’t record any outs… but glad we got the W!

Stanford missed an extra point. Santa Clara with two touchdowns, extra points and a field goal. A W is a W.

What a frustrating game when we were on the field, and what a thrilling game when we were at bat.
Gut wrenching to see college pitchers have such a hard time throwing a strike.

That was one of the ugliest games I've seen in a long time, at least since my son moved on from Little League.
It was a season high for Stanford in HRs (6), but also in giving up HBP (4), free passes (BB+HBP=16) and hits (17).
Stanford used 10 pitchers, none particularly effective, out of the 14 pitchers who have accumulated a statistic this year.
Matthews and Dixon didn't pitch because they are starters who went considerable distance last weekend and will be expected to again next weekend.
Matt Swartz didn't pitch, but has only two career pitches in total.
Ty Uber didn't pitch.
Uber seems to be either injured or ... something. He had been reasonably effective in relief up until his last outing against Sacramento State where he got shelled. That was April 18 and he hasn't pitched since.
After watching, I was surprised to see there were merely 9 HRs in the game. Seemed like every lazy fly ball was at least hitting the wall, most going out.

At some point if you’re Esquer, I think you’ve got to wonder if Eager is the best man to manage the pitching staff. The control issues are too widespread throughout the staff and have been going on too long to ignore imo. Ironically, one of the best to fill the role that I can remember was in the opposing dugout last night.

Some notes on Eager.
Was with Esquer at Cal for two years, now has been at Stanford for 5+.
Year Team ERA (Pac Rk) Walks/game (Rank)
2018 2.88 (1st) 3.11 (3rd)
2019 3.62 (3rd) 3.08 (1st)
2020 3.50 (4th) 4.25 (4th) [aborted season]
2021 4.64 (7th) 4.07 (6th)
2022 4.23 (3rd) 3.98 (5th)
2023 5.65 (9th) 5.02 (11th) [so far]
Not quite sure what to make of that overall.
The walks are largely this year's problem.
The average performance is pretty good but the trend isn't fantastic - while ERAs are rising overall the trend in the ranking isn't great either.
My biggest long term concern about the pitching staff is that there are essentially no contributors right now from the sophomore class. Uber has gone AWOL. The only other nominal pitchers in the class are Montgomery and Sapien who seemed to have mostly left pitching behind and Jaden Bruno is listed on the roster as a RS sophomore. We're going to need this year's frosh pitchers (Scott, Dugan, O'Haran, Moore) to really develop this off-season.

Thanks for the stats, CT. I think it's also fair to point out that in several of those seasons our overall staff numbers were significantly bolstered by one ace who was among the best in the country. While it's true that every staff has an ace with the best stats on staff, my gut says that the dropoff between guys like the Beck brothers, Alex Williams and Quinn Matthews and the rest of our staff has been steeper than most programs. This over reliance on an ace has come back to bite us in June as seen in Williams' dead arm and B. Beck having to throw the 9th of the Vandy CWS game despite clearly running on fumes.

I didn’t quite realize the Arizona game was on Pac-12 Networks from a half hour ago.
Bonus? I can watch from the beginning and fast-forward through ads on Sling.

Stanford let's Zona tie it in the 8th as they steal home.
Stanford wins it 9-8 in the 9th with a sacrifice fly by Moore.

Impression: Dowd has given up the tying run in quite a few games, then credited with the win. I propose a new nickname: Dread Pirate Dowd.
