Ugh. Sorry to hear about Fingall. Missed the game for a brunch, but will try to catch it on DVR later. Glad to hear we came back from an early deficit and gritted it out. All these injuries are really taking a toll on our ability to stabilize a lineup!
MT: Wow, not only did we have three 20+ point scorers, but Carrington was one rebound away from us having
three double-doubles: Smith (pts + rebs), Williams (pts + assts) and Carrington (pts + rebs). Also, Smith had 5 blocks, 3 assists, and 2 steals to go with her 24 points and 11 rebounds! Talk about a gritty effort.

Really good scrappy win—also really pleased to see that we were 14-17 from the line. Miss a few more of those, and it could’ve easily gone the other way.

Tough, we’ll-earned win, coming back twice from being down double digits. DiJonai was key in the first half, Alanna in the second, and Kiana throughout. UCLA tested many aspects of our game, including throwing a few different zones against us, and we seemed to acquit ourselves well (haven’t checked stats yet), except giving up too many O-boards. Tara was very complimentary in the post-game talk with fans. And she introduced Haley Jones who made the trip over from Santa Cruz to support her future teammates!

Another tidbit from the post-game talkback with Tara: a fan asked where Alexa Romano has been, and Tara replied that she is no longer on the team "for personal reasons." Sad to see her go during her senior season. Hope all is well.

My write-up done at the top. Quite a game, and quite a lot of adversity to overcome. Let's hope Maya heals quickly and Lexie shakes off the rust fast too!

Gritty win but this game showed the importance of Dodson/Fingall. On offense, we missed our two best offensive rebounder / put back players and thus don't have the opportunities for easy points. And on defense, we struggled to contain penetration and heavily struggled with rebounding in the fourth quarter. Both Dodson and Fingall clear a lot of space with their box outs, allowing Smith or Carrington to snare the defensive rebound. Without them, it was multiple offensive rebounds for UCLA and we are a little lucky their shooting cooled down in the second half.

Probably you are right. On the other hand, Lindy before the game and Tara after the game noted that UCLA is the #1 offensive rebounding team in the nation. We were probably going to struggle with that regardless. Yes we gave up 16 offensive rebounds, but we also got 12 of our own. And our two best rebounders on the season? Carrington and Lexie Hull, who is now coming back. We might be able to make do until Dodson gets healthy.
Also, for what it is worth, Tara called out Carrington, Smith, and Jerome as the outstanding three to talk to the crowd today. She praised Jerome's two baskets and especially her defense. Perhaps she is trying to build up her confidence in anticipation of a lot more minutes coming her way, and possibly Jerome played well defensively. I was not following her that carefully to see. I did see her guarding Kennedy Burke at one point, who had an average day with 4/10 shooting.

since Jan. 23, 2015 at UCLA, according to the write-up on gostanford.com.
Those of you who know the game better than I do, why is the team doing so much better against zone defenses this season? Today, UCLA deployed what looked like a 2-3 zone with guards up high in the first half, and then a 1-2-2(?) with a big up top. Each time, though slowed down, our offense found answers whereas last year we’d flail for long stretches. Even with the injuries, this bodes well, especially as Lexie shakes the rust.

A great win despite losing both post players. Alanna was awesome on O and D moving into the post
At the chalk talk Lindy said Romano had a family emergency. Remember at the Friday game the team had her initials and numbers on the backs of their shoes.
Tara said this weekend.
A pleasure sitting with fan of the game 81. Plus free food when you get floor tickets lol. And of course excellent commentary from 81.
A truest gutty gritty win.

Last couple of years we couldn't shoot so well from deep. Tough to beat a zone if you can't hit 3's. This year's team is looking like one of our best long-range shooting teams ever, so that is one factor for sure. Also I think this team passes better than we have in recent years, so if the lane is clogged we find other avenues to score.

Good points. Also I remember hearing we've worked a lot more on zone offense, after last year's experience where the Princeton worked almost too well against man and so our opponents spent most of the game in zone.

Congrats 81 on being chosen for those perks for the game. That's really awesome!
I assume in your write-up you meant Nadia when you wrote that she is out for the year with an ACL instead of Maya. I froze when I read that sentence, but you referred to Lindy's answer about Maya's uncertain timetable later on, so I think you are referring to Nadia and accidentally wrote in the wrong name.
Going forward, it sounds like we are deepest at wing, especially with Lexie's return. We have both Hull sisters, Jerome and Carrington plus Brewer and Moschkau in a pinch as well.
Obviously, the post position has gotten the most attention in the last 48 hours with Maya sitting out this weekend and Nadia's season-ending injury. I really hope Maya's return is closer to the shorter range of Lindy's estimate rather than the longer end. We need all the interior help we can get especially playing Oregon's frontline of Hebard and Sabally next month. As other people have mentioned, not only Maya's presence but her development since last season could be the key to a long postseason run on both ends of the court, which is only made more urgent and critical with Nadia's injury. We are painfully thin in the 4/5 position and it is now more essential than ever that Alanna stay out of foul trouble as we've seen the effects of Maya & Nadia's absences today.
However, the other news which has not gotten as much attention is the effect of Alexa's departure from the team. With Marta still injured and Anna just coming back herself from injury, we only have Kiana and Jenna for full-time guards. We saw how quickly Tara pulled Anna and Jenna from the game after they committed two silly turnovers when Williams was getting a rest. Kiana might have to play nearly the full 40, especially in close games and that could have a deleterious effect not only at the end of the game, but down the stretch run as well.
I was hoping that Jenna would have a similar immediate impact as the Hull sisters have, given her national accolades as a senior, but it looks like she might not be as far along, especially offensively as we have hoped.
As a last note, I don't know about y'all, but my heart skips a beat every time that one of our players falls and especially when they are slow to get up. Every hard drive and tumble during the game today put me on pins and needles

Yes, makes sense. With three point threats, the zone has to be extended, which then makes it easier for entry passes down low. Last year, the zones were packed in so much, cutting off driving lanes, too. Would be good if we could hit more mid-range jumpers - not many this afternoon though better than against SC.

Yes indeed! Thank you for the catch, which has now been corrected. I have learned a lot of respect for journalists by doing these write-ups, which I try to do very quickly after each game. But I often make mistakes when rushing to post them, and keep correcting myself over the next few hours. That one was a doozy, though!

That's too bad. I wonder if she had to withdraw for the quarter? Also odd is that her instagram was recently updated and doesn't seem to reflect that anything is out of the ordinary. Hope everything will be ok, whatever it is that is going on.

Some element of respecting her privacy, whether medical, academic or other, is also in order. We may never know, and that’s ok. Wishing her the best going forward.
