But too slow to be an every down safety.  Hell, probably too slow to be a good linebacker.

I genuinely wonder about Booker and KBK in the draft.  At the beginning of the year, I thought they might be shoe-ins, but neither of them played at the level of an early draft entrant.  On the flip side, they might want to go before their stock drops further.

BC

With respect to Booker, all of his and Shaw’s comments over the last couple weeks have indicated finality and closure. Last week, he started a sentence in response to Troy Clardy with, “As I come to the end of my run here…” But he was super gracious and thankful for his Stanford experience.  I think you can take the “if” out of your sentence - Booker is very likely gone, and DWP and Johnson have already said they’re gone.

With respect to KBK, the signs seem to point to him returning for his senior season. That would be wise because he can improve his stock and obtain his degree, while not foregoing guaranteed round 2-3 money (because he’s probably not lined up for that.) Bear in mind that guys like Adebo and Phillips went in round 3 - that’s a high bar. It doesn’t mean anything, but I noticed that KBK sat for the last series or two vs. Notre Dame and they let some of the seniors play, like Donjae Logan.

My guess is that KBK is returning because it would be the smart and rational thing to do in his case. He’s a great player but not quite good enough to risk leaving without a degree.

FYI - 6 Vandy players entered the portal today (8 overall including 3 DL, a CB and a safety). Maybe an opportunity to get some immediate defensive help.

Ahem. Help from a Vandy defense that gave up 41 points to our offense? I’ll pass (pun intended).

I hear you. But looking at the roster, I cringe at the lack of depth on the D line. Will they have enough bodies for spring practice? Reinforcements presumably arrive in the fall but they will be frosh and not ready to play college ball yet. A couple of experienced transfers could help.

Hey, if you look at the 10 best plays in each game they played this season, Vandy had a very good defense.  :-)

RE: Football Senior Decisions - Phogge - 11-30-2021

Booker underperformed IMO. Johnson and Wade Perry were mostly ineffective. 2022 isn't going to be great so play the kids. Maybe somebody emerges. I disagree with BC about Sinclair. He's a dud at ILB so why not give him a try at a position without any depth.

I'm also ok if McKee transfers. With a crappy OL you need a QB who can get out and scoot. Definitely not McKee's strength. Plus they aren't going anywhere anyway. Get Patu ready for 2023.

Good one, Marty! Almost but not quite as good as our wonderful offense.

I wish Heimuli well. But do other teams even use a fullback?

I recall there was quite some buzz around Heimuli when he joined the roster: he was projected to be that power running back we needed to establish our up-the-gut, high TOP game plan.  A short blip, and he's gone.

Austin Jones also came to Stanford with high expectations.  Either he is good and cannot find any holes behind our current O-line, or he is a 4-star underachiever.  Curiously, he had more rushing yards in the Covid-shortened 2020 season (550) than this season (370).

I think he is a good running back, But CMac and Bryce Love are tough acts to follow. Also, as has been pointed out many times the holes this year were a rare commodity.

RE: Football Senior Decisions - Phogge - 12-01-2021

Riley doing a Mike White at SC. Has already pulled a five star Sooner QB commit.

White took Muncie and Joe DeRosa away from Stanford when he got the Cal job.

There is a picture taken during the 1972 Rose Bowl (Stanford against Michigan) of game action, in the background is the Stanford bench and behing the bench is Muncie in street clothes.

RE: Football Senior Decisions - Phogge - 12-01-2021

DeRosa (my cousin and a starting tackle) told me that Roger Theder's wife was tasked with making sure that Muncie went to class.

RE: Football Senior Decisions - VB Card - 12-01-2021

Andres Fox and Trey LaBounty in the portal as grad transfers.

Has any of the seniors actually said they're coming back? Seems like last one left turn out the lights at this point...

So far the portal guys are all 2nd stringers, aren't they. They may want to see if someone wants to make them a starter. I never thought we used Heimuli enuf and have always wondered why Andres Fox never became a stud. He was excellent as a frosh and then injured. That must have led to 2nd, or in his case, 3rd string. He played well late this year. And Ryan Johnson was a second stringer forced to start.

RE: Football Senior Decisions - Phogge - 12-02-2021

The two edge guys who showed upside in limited play a few years ago were Fox and Umeroh. Fox disappeared and Umeroh retired.

Stanford has little outside rush left, just Herron and he ended the season on the shelf.
