RE: Other Games this Weekend - OutsiderFan - 09-04-2022

Will the Pac schools ever stop spitting the bit against SEC teams? What in the hell is Utah doing throwing a pick from the UF 6, on 2nd down and Goal, with less than 30 secs left, down 3?!?!?!?

Only watched about 5 or 6 minutes of actual game time, but did see the last 3 minutes, enough to see Utah is Florida's physical equal, and at minimum that game should have gone to OT. Pac teams always seem to find a way to lose late in these big matches against SEC teams. Given how dreadful the Pac is otherwise, Utah had to win that game to be a CFP contender. Brutal loss on heels of last brutal loss in Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

As an aside, I was right that my passion for college football is dead.  I still am interested in it, but Notre Dame and Ohio State couldn't keep my attention. Happened to see the go-ahead Ohio State TD, then didn't tune in the rest of the game. Historically, would have been glued to the screen. I found myself more entertained reading the board game threads of Stanford and Cal than even bothering to look at the box scores, let alone finding a way to watch or listen to radio.  I love the game, but hate the administration of it and hope I'm not the only one tuning out.

Are we supposed to be happy about that?

Absolutely not.  But it is interesting to track how some of our transfers are faring at their new destinations.  Nathanial Peat had a pretty good outing in Missouri's game yesterday.  I wish they were still on our roster.  If Smith goes down, we have only scant back-up potential at RB.

I think you're blinded by the poor results, or we have very different coaching needs. I would absolutely expect any good coach to take those two remaining shots at the end zone (and through the air, given the lack of timeouts), especially with someone like Rising at the helm. I'd be yelling at my TV if he'd settle for the tie and OT in that situation. Tough loss, but them's the breaks, in my book.

I can't answer your question.  But I do remember Stanford's 10-5 loss to Colorado in 2016.  That game was stultifying.  We went up 3-0 late in the first quarter, then did not score again until 4 seconds left in the game. The Cardinal committed 4 turnovers, 3 off of INTs by Ryan Burns.  It was the last game he would start.

Um, trying to win behind one of the best QBs (allegedly) around.

You are truly an amazingly quick study.

"and hope I'm not the only one tuning out."

Why do you want others to tune out? Why would you care, if you've given up caring?

Fundamentally, I agree. The only caveat I would add is the QB should know and additionally been reminded of the situation. If its there, take it. If it isn't, throw it over the goalpost.

Crimson, where is the ignore button? We could do it to Toejam Al and HecSpec on T Dome.

Did they have any TO’s  left?  If so, I definitely run once.  Maybe QB draw.  I’f no TO’s I’m still thinking about running as I can spike it.

Bigger issue was where the pass was thrown. Can’t throw into traffic.  Look for one on one on sidelines (fade) or back of EZ. Awful decision by Rising. Not crazy that the route was run (especially if, as it appears that was first read) either.

Looking at the highlights, it looked like a pretty ill advised pass. I guess Rising thought he could thread the needle between two defenders, but it sure didn't work.

I am going further. It was mega-stupid. It was second down with 22 seconds to go. He probably had another play if the pass was incomplete before they had to kick a FG. Their were two Florida defenders in front of his receiver. His receiver had fallen, so he had to throw it low. The ball was actually behind the receiver, so he had no chance to catch it. Utah had 3 receivers crossing in the middle of the field at different depths of the end zone. Utah had one receiver running out left that was well covered. IMHO, not a well designed play because it sucked all the defenders into the same area. If the QB had waited he MIGHT have has a guy running left to right that would have been open. Hard to know because him throwing attracted defenders. Throw it away and try again.

RE: Other Games this Weekend - AlbanyCardinal - 09-04-2022

No question it's on Rising and I'm sure he knows it. Even if (and it's a doubtful if) the coaches hadn't reminded him of the situation, his situational awareness surely understood he had time to throw it away if the coverage wasn't right. But he's mortal and it's a split-second decision. In that situation I still want my coach aiming for the end zone and kicking, if it comes to that, on 4th down, but I don't doubt it must sting for all parties involved.

RE: Other Games this Weekend - Mick - 09-04-2022

Pac 12 is now 9-3 after the first weekend.  Losses by #7 Utah and #11 Ducks and Colorado.  Everyone else won.

Only other ranked team was #14 USC.  With the Notre Dame, Utah and Oregon losses, my guess is USC ends up at #11 or so. We'll be playing the top ranked Pac-12 team, I expect.

RE: Other Games this Weekend - old spanish trail - 09-04-2022

Did anyone else think the Oregon D looked slow?

This is exactly my point. You just can't throw a high risk pass on 2nd down and Goal with so much riding on the play. Maybe on 3rd, but you are kicking a FG for OT if you don't get TD on 3rd down, so high risk passes probably aren't a great idea in that situation period. Needs to be a "if my guy can't catch it nobody can passes on 2nd down.  I've no love for Utah, but do respect Whittingham and hate seeing teams like Utah blow big opportunities tee'd up for them, especially against an SEC team.

crimson, it's real simple. You don't win a game by throwing a pick down 3 from opponent 6 yard line with less than 30 secs to play. Goose and I made clear it wasn't throwing a pass that was the problem, it was the pass thrown and the decision to make it that was the problem.

You know what made clear Utah was the equal of Florida physically? It was Utah's fantastic pass protection and usual strong defense for most part. Utah is typically great in the trenches and their TEs are very good, but they just don't have the top level outside receivers needed to get to the top of the college football heap. They can compete at the top but don't have a large margin for error against top teams.

When did I ever say anything about not caring about college football? I specifically said I'm interested, but my passion for it is gone. I hope to get it back when the market rejects its wayward path  - hence hoping others stop watching too - and it organizes itself into something I can again be passionate about.

Calling a QB draw with a terrific running QB is not settling.  But agree mostly on Rising. Should have thrown it away.

I see that FSU beat LSU.  Didn’t watch.  But I’m always glad when Brian Kelly loses.

poorly designed and poorly executed. wide receiver #21 is aggressively blocking the deep defensive back in the area more than 5 yards downfield just before the pass is thrown. i believe that's an illegal pick, technically offensive holding. pretty flagrant on the replay though it didn't get called.  (at least in the nfl it's not legal, not sure about ncaa)

Missed extra point with no time on the clock. Several missed kicks and silly turnovers/mistakes by Kelly's team. So much for the regimen he's installed at LSU. Allegedly, he's started to talk with a draw, too. . . .

Even better, a gut wrenching loss.  Here’s hoping for 11 more. Maybe he used the same great coaching comment to the kicker that I heard him scream at a player on the kick coverage team as he got near (with his usual bright red face) “When are you going to grow a pair.”
