RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Utah Friday 6pm - Madera86 - 01-20-2023

Better shooting at home. Good D after a hot start by the Utes. One thing I'm envious of is the 9/9 FT shooting by the opponent. It's preventing our lead from being even larger.

FT shooting and we're not dominating the boards.

Sorry to hear about Lepolo. Hope she recovers quickly,

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Utah Friday 6pm - martyup - 01-20-2023

Poor start to the second half.

We got beat in the 3rd Q 14-18.  We lead by 5 at the end of 3.  GO CARD!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Utah Friday 6pm - mbdude - 01-20-2023

There is really not much different with the offense. Jump always tries backdoor,  and goes to middle off of screens. Still problem shooting 3s.
Running more for Brink down low though

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Utah Friday 6pm - DaBears17 - 01-20-2023

Is Lepolo wearing a boot?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Utah Friday 6pm - martyup - 01-20-2023

We've got an 8 point lead with 4:30 to play.  Fran and Ashten helping a lot.

Brink on the bench with 4 fouls.  Pili doesn't get called as much as she should.  She butchered Fran under the basket with no call.

Brink fouled out in one of the cleanest games she's played this season.  No justice no peace.

We win 74 to 62.  That's a top 10 win!

Season high for Haley.  25 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 brinks.

Cameron Brink:  25 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 brinks.

Yes, she went to the locker room, came out with her ankle on ice.  After halftime she came out in a boot.  Hopefully it is all an overabundance of caution.  The fact that she stopped icing it and stopped elevating it seems encouraging.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 -- #8 Utah 62 - martyup - 01-20-2023

We held UT to 33% from the field and 19% from 3.

We shot 49% and 29%.  Also, we made 78% of our free throws.  Much improved shooting performance over the loss to USC.

Lepolo was walking around  after the game with a boot. Seemed to be moving  around easily without a limp

Well, at the chalk talk we were told that they had been practicing ways to make our offense more productive, although Britney Anderson was very circumspect about not saying what it was.  She said hopefully we would see the adjustments working in the game.

With Jump there were a lot of middle screens to get her open in the mid range--that is pretty clearly her adjustment.  Did anybody here say we needed the option of making some mid range jumpers?  Well, that was the plan.  Jump was 3/5 from two and 2/5 from three, mostly in the first half. Utah adjusted and seemed to take that away from her in the second.

I'm not actually sure what we did schematically to spring Brink for 25 points.  She hit her one three point attempt but was already being productive long before that.  On one play in the first half she was surrounded by 4 Utah players and she got a shot off and got free throws.  It wasn't that long ago that free throw shooting was her weakness, but lately she has been on fire from the free throw line, and was 7/8 tonight--with most of the 7 hitting nothing but net.  Unfortunately, she also had 6 turnovers and fouled out--with a couple of those 5 fouls being quite questionable.  But her fifth came close to the end of the game when it was out of reach for Utah, so it was not consequential.

As for Jones, she was 10/17 for 25 points, and most of those were (wait for it) mid range jumpers.  Yes, she had her acrobatic over-the-shoulder layups after the defense loosened up, but she punished Utah for leaving her open around the free throw line.  This is what has been missing from her game for a while now, and it was back.  Let's hope she keeps doing this for the rest of the year--when Jones hits the mid range at a high percentage she also get more openings for the inside game.

To defend Utah, you have to slow down Pili and prevent her from getting the ball deep in the paint, and you have to defend the three point line.  We didn't do so well with Pili, who got 25.  I thought Prechtel was our best interior defender on her.  Pili did have to work for her points--she was 8/18 and 0/3 from three point territory.  But she has a spin move that gets her around taller defenders regularly, as well as a jump shot.  She kept the game close for Utah.

We did better defending the three point line, holding them to 5/26, way below their average treys and way below their normal sky-high percentage.  This is probably why Emma-Nnopu started--to give us more quickness and defense on the perimeter.

With Lepolo's injury, Nivar got 27 minutes.  She had 3 assists and 0 turnovers--Utah never pressed the point guard.  Her shooting was off, going 1/7 and hitting her 2 free throws.  She seems deadly accurate in practice--my guess is that at some point those shots are going to start falling for her in games and she could become a mainstay for both offense and defense.  But not yet.  Harriel also came in at point after Nivar picked up 2 fouls, and acquitted herself well, hitting her one shot--a trey.

Belibi and Prechtel both reached double digit minutes but did not add a lot of offense.  They each had some outstanding defensive plays--Belibi using her length to disrupt passes and Prechtel bothered a couple of Pili shots.

As a team, we were even with Utah on turnovers.  Utah had more rebounds than we did, but this is probably because they shot such a lower percentage than we did--34% to our 49%.  As a result, we held Utah to its second lowest point total this year--and it would have been the lowest if they had not hit a meaningless three pointer at the final buzzer.

In short, our offense did show a new wrinkle or two and was much improved, but this game was won with a level of defense that Utah has not seen before.  They will get a second change at us--we will have the most difficult road trip of the season on the final weekend of Pac 12 play when we must play Utah and Colorado at elevation, and Utah will have much time to prepare.

Still, overall, I am encouraged.  Our players needed this win.  I wish Jump had been more successful in the second half--it makes me think that Roberts figured out our wrinkle and shut it down at halftime.  But I was especially pleased to see Jones hitting the midrange and radiating smiles all over the court.

Great summary!! Jones and Brink played exceptional. We saw very little Demetre and Iriafen tonight. I hope Iriafen isn’t permanently relegated to end of the bench role. She’s been way to good all season and could be a great spark off the bench. Hope she stays ready. Sunday will be a game. Looking forward to it already.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 -- #8 Utah 62 - chimera - 01-20-2023

Hope Lepolo is not out for long.  I am guessing she will miss the CO game Sunday, just based on them usually being cautious.  Our stars shone tonight - Jones was excellent and Brink also aside from fouling.  The offense was less stagnant.  Did not hit threes much or at a good percentage though.  My hope is that Nivar, who I really like a lot, will benefit from the forced increased playing time.  She is very strong going to the basket, can shoot (I know she missed a lot tonight but she should get better with playing time), is aggressive and defends well generally.  She tends to be overly aggressive and reach on defense but if she stops the fouling, she will be fine.  Utah doesn't put a lot of pressure on the perimeter so this was an easy way to get into the flow of things.  If we get Nivar going, once Lepolo comes back the team will be stronger at guard.  CO will be a test for the new backcourt.  I assume we will see Nivar at the point a lot and more of Harriel, who hit a nice three, backing up, with some of Jones as well.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 -- #8 Utah 62 - jonnyss - 01-20-2023

i, for one, posted calling for mid-range jumpers. very glad to see the coaches concurred! that really plays to haley's strengths. no need for her to shoot from 3.

fran did great. got in the passing lanes for several deflections and paired well with cam for high-low. i understand starting agnes, but fran seemed to offer more.

with talana out, indya did well enough - with one beautiful coast-to-coast (if i remember correctly) drive. so did jzaniah when indya got 2 fouls.

cam was a beast!

I really don't like the Utah style, I think they play dirty. Physical play is okay, but there were nasty fouls and illegal screens all game long. And the refs seemed to be more interested in keeping the foul numbers even than in accurately calling the game.

oh, I already do.

I can only hope we have more observant officials for Sunday.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 -- #8 Utah 62 - treetop11 - 01-21-2023

Refreshing to see our 2 AA's together take over the game and led us to victory. Cam had a monster night. Haley made some incredible moves and finished. Such a shame she can't hit threes, otherwise she probably could for 30+ fairly regularly.

Prechtel was the best at defending Pili. Ashten's bulk was a factor so Pili couldn't push her around, but also Ashten fronted her, making passes to Pili tougher and forcing Pili to try and set up where she wasn't as comfortable.

Great to see Nivar and Harriel step up. They weren't outstanding, but they were solid and did not have deer in the headlights look - they looked like they belonged on the court.

Good to see Jump putting the ball on the floor more - could still do more and be more confident.

Lepolo must be enormously tough or her ankle isn't too bad. Having badly sprained my ankles in basketball, baseball, and football five times, I know what a real bad sprain feels like and how you react. If real bad, Lepolo would have been writhing in agony and probably would have needed to be helped off the floor. Perhaps she is just incredibly tough, but I suspect that it's serious enough to be cautious, but not a long term thing. I do agree with Chimera that she will be out for the CO game and possibly for one or two more after that. No sense rushing her, she needs to be fully healed for the stretch. Our other players just need to step up.

Officiating was absolutely piss-poor - bad enough that those refs should be canned. We did about 4-5 fouls that were obvious and should have been called. But Utah deserved at least another 15 and Pili should have gotten about 5 more. The worst was when Brink did a spin move and scooped it in for a basket in the first half. On that play, Pili had her arms wrapped around Brink and it should have been an "and one" but no foul was called. Cameron couldn't believe it nor could I. These refs were a joke.

Our team brought it on defense tonight holding a high scoring Utah to a low number and really low FG & 3 Pt percentage. Our offense looked better in most respects. Utah never has the type of players or style that give us fits, so it's not surprising that they have onlly 1 W over us over the years. CU is tough because of their style of play, but we can hurt them a lot in the post.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 -- #8 Utah 62 - 81alum - 01-21-2023

To add to what I posted earlier, and to concur with some other Cardboarders, Nivar's one basket was a thing of absolute beauty.  She really knows how to finish around the rim and looked like a faster, more nimble Jones with her drive to the hoop and over the shoulder layup.  Wow.  If her jumpshot ever starts falling then double wow.  We probably will see a lot of her on Sunday, so I expect she will get another big chance to shine.

I also concur with treetop's assessment of Prechtel on Pili.  I think Prechtel is our best pure paint defender--remember it was Prechtel on Aliyah Boston too.  Brink is excellent too and blocks a heckuva lot more shots, but Pili got around Brink a few times and had a harder time doing so to Prechtel.

I thought individually Stanford was substantially more skilled than Utah and Utah didn't have anyone who could guard Brink.  Utah probably felt they had to play physical to have a chance.   But, of course, I agree they should not play dirty if that's what they did.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 -- #8 Utah 62 - MV72018 - 01-21-2023

Kudos to Haley Jones for continued excellent rebounding and for improved shooting (10 for 17, and no treys attempted). With all her drives to the hoop, curiously only 4 assists. Should finish if the lane is open or dish if it's clogged, to Jump or someone else.

Must keep up the improved shooting for Stanford to beat top-caliber teams.
