RE: 2023 Stanford at Hawaii Predictions Thread - ADPinWDC - 08-29-2023

"So if Stanford can actually play a crisp first game, which they haven't in I can't remember how long, they should win big, 49-21."
That is where I am sitting for the first game... until Troy Taylor and the Guys disappoint us.
Taylor showed QUICK results at a nothing program left for dead at sad SacST -- 0-7 in league in 2018.
They went 9-4 in Taylor's first season, 2019.  Quick turnaround.   30-8 over three seasons.  Impressive.

I am betting
1)  Taylor knows what he is doing with QBs.
2)  The new Defensive Coaching staff transplanted from @WISC pulls together the Defense quicker than we think.
Look for THREE Turnovers by the Defense to make the difference in this game, killing Rainbow drives.
Yes, the RWs sling it around in the Air Raid, and I think that means INTs.  Both our CBs, Wright & Manley, are hawkers.
And I think our DL and LBs will stop run threats -- as Vandy did.
3)  The O-Line for HAWI is not USC.   Party-in-the-Backfield REDUX with Bailey, Keneley, and some blitzing LBs.
4)  Taylor will call a balanced game and let Smith & Filkins slash through between short routes to Yurasek and the tall WRs.

Until he disappoints, I am betting on Taylor, plus the Turnovers.  Have some.
Harbaugh came out of Univ of San Diego (the Toreros, not the Aztecs)...

Great analysis above. All I know is Hawaii has no (or few) four stars while we have a healthy dose of four stars on defense as well as at WR, TE and RB. I predict the new coaches will let the players play to their strengths and, for the most part, the players will succeed in doing so. There may be some sloppiness here and there but I expect the game to be well in hand for Stanford by the 3rd quarter, with a 31-17 Stanford victory at the end.

The sad thing about our thin OL for Hawaii (and the rest of the season) is that we could have had Oklahoma's starting left tackle, Michigan's starting center, and possibly Michigan's starting right tackle.

(I couldn't find the official depth chart for Michigan's first game yet.)

If we did, that would mean Shaw is still the coach. I'll take the tradeoff.

Seems like last few years we've made a specialty out of being outplayed by teams with far less star-rated players than ours. Their lesser star players playing better as a team, with more passion, determination, cohesiveness, better plays, playing more clutch rather than choke, etc.  I'm hoping (without any hard evidence) that this year we turn those tables around and surprise some higher-star-rated PAC opponents with one foot out the conference door.

Interesting given that Hinton was so heavily criticized on the Cardboard for poor play.

It may well be true that his situation at Michigan has allowed/facilitated a significant improvement in play. It is also probable he is being asked to do different things, which he may be much better at. That said, I think we all need to wait until he has played some games to decide he is markedly improved. What coaches say and what actually happens often differs.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Hinton has a breakout year. He had several good games last year that were buried in the rest of the team's mediocrity.
Too bad he left. He hung on for a year, and good for him for that, at least.

I don't think that a player who commits to a university and team deserves approbation or support for 'hanging on for a year' on the team to which he committed.

Hinton played in 7 games last year. According to PFF, in 3 of them he pass blocked well and in 3 he pass blocked poorly. His run blocking was mediocre or bad in every single one.

Under the circumstances of the 21 and 22 seasons, I disagree. Having inconsistent performances and considered mediocre is a hell of a lot better than the team's and head coach's performances which were disastrous.

Not a subscriber to PFF. But I'd guess much of our OLine had poor run blocking scores.
Which I presume a slow mesh that takes a long time to develop and the D tees off on it, and ends in a delayed handoff to the RB who had been standing around like a deer in headlights with a "kick me" post it stuck to his helmet, and so of course tackled in the backfield for a loss, ends up a bad run block score for the OLine, who basically had no chance on that play.

4 of them (Nugent, Miller, Leyrer, Rouse) had good run blocking grades in at least half their games. Nugent in particular was an animal.

Thanks. So of our 4 prior horsemen of the apocalypse, 3 have bolted the stables and the 4th is now gimpy?

I'm reading between the lines here, Sam, but are you saying that Shaw was asked to resign because of the transfer exodus? Forgive me if you have already talked about this elsewhere.

At any rate, if that is what it took to get rid of Shaw, then I agree...
