During the USC game Brando was acidic toward Stanford and almost gleeful at what the Trojans did to us. Disdainful. I was quite taken aback during the broadcast with how he talked about us. My read is that the meetings/coverage/etc. this year have led him to cotton to Taylor.

Interesting. As I recall Brando seemed to like us during the Shaw days.

RE: Sunday morning thoughts - Washington - msqueri - 10-31-2023

That actually could be part of it. He strikes me as exactly the type who would eat up Shaw’s schtick and fall for propaganda that Shaw was the best we could do/foiled by events outside of his control/unfairly scapegoated. Brando in the USC game could have been thinking Stanford was getting its rightful comeuppance whereas Brando in the Washington game may have moved past Shaw and/or remembered he likes Stanford and Stanford men. Also possible I was misreading him and what I interpreted as disdain was really more over-exuberance for USC.

I'm no Tim Brando fanboy, far from it, but I will say this: He was bang-on, double-dog-dare-ya on target when he uncorked the following, in what used to be called a Tweet:

"We had another epic Saturday in CFB tonight at Stanford and as I hop on my redeye flight home I’m compelled to post this," said Brando. "I’ve never seen a 5th ranked team like Washington play before such a small audience on the road in a Conference game. What happened tonight was epic yet so few seemed (to) care on site. It’s my sincere hope that @StanfordFball garners more respect from its students, faculty and alumni in coming years under @CoachTroyTaylor! He and his team deserves better. Ya wonder why the @PAC12 is on the verge of extinction? Apathy and lack of overall respect for a mammoth tradition in CFB."
He continued, explaining that he feels for the program as there seems to be a lack of respect for the history and tradition.
"I have greater empathy for @StanfordFootball even more because this is their home and there seemingly were more vendors than fans in the stands. I understand CFB is not as big a deal in the Silicon Valley, but how about some respect for the rich history & tradition of your program. Let’s hope it improves before heading to the @TheACC Many thanks to the @StanfordFball and @UW_Football for giving us a great game," said Brando.

(I believe Coach Taylor will do exactly that, BTW.).  And thanks for your post-mortem, as always.

It’s a little ironic that you are so enamored with this Tweet, since it is directly critical of fans like you, who show so little “respect for the rich history & tradition of [the] program.”

You apparently have no trace of a clue as to who I am.  And I prefer it that way. Have a really nice day.

Many seem to think he is out for the season with the injury suffered against Washington. Hope he gets some more chances to show that this addition made sense.

Interesting. I've always liked Brando partnered with Spencer Tillman. Brando wasn't saying anything I wasn't thinking against USC, but to be fair I bailed on that game quickly and they could have broadcast in Latin for all that it mattered. I assume they are just reacting to the quality of the competition. Stanford was dogmeat against SC, but very competitive against UW. I heard what he said about the lack of support and how UW could be playing down to that. Human nature. I remember Mike Price at WSU saying they often had a hard time in Palo Alto because it had the ambiance of an empty parking lot. And yeah, I'm a brobdingnagian part of the problem. Shortly after hearing Brando encapsulate Silicon Valley College Football truthfully, I turned back in the comfort of a leather chair to watch even-game Tech complete its rally against Carolina and a Homecoming crowd (with too many empty seats, btw - this is endemic to college football now) spill out onto the field in jubilation.

It is interesting how competitive we were against UW, a legitimately good team, versus how non-competitive we were against USC and UCLA. I'm still trying to figure out why. (I was going to add Colorado to the UW datum, but I think that we now know that the Buffs are a fairly average team with a really good QB.)

My guess is that Stanford simply was too green in early September to be the least bit competitive against $C. My guess is Stanford would give them a better - likely much better - game now. UCLA is an extremely physical team that Stanford simply can't match along the line of scrimmage.

Agreed, but note that "extremely physical" is code for "one of the oldest teams in the country on both lines thanks to the portal."

Very simple formula. Just get old in the trenches.

Hmmm....Jane Stanford?  Herbert Hoover?  John Arrillaga?  Milli Vanilli?  D.B. Cooper?  How many more guesses do we get?

RE: Sunday morning thoughts - Washington - washingtonismoney - 11-01-2023

Might be all those things, but a young bad team (to be perfectly blunt) probably has more variable performances than any other combination of those two attributes.

I fear this is somewhat wishful. There has been a little bit of a pattern of improvement but even more the case of essentially alternating between respectable and not even major college football (top 130 something) level. We can’t yet say this team is consistently trending up. Hopefully that’s coming.
