RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - burger - 11-14-2023

Our defense is just awful this year.  I've been complaining about our being out of position to close out on three point shooters as long as Haase has been here.  But it's worse than ever this year.

If the offense has improved this year (I remain unconvinced on the front), it's not going to matter if we keep giving up wide open threes and easy layups.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - old spanish trail - 11-14-2023

Why did I watch that? If Spencer is hurting, why is he playing? Can anyone by Reynaud rebound? Do we have any plays? Gealer should not be out 2nd man threat. Gawd. Here we go again. Stoyakovich looked good and will be better. Right now thinks he can make every basket.

Agreed
On offense one starter SJones a black hole of scoring and no one off the bench really sparkled
In hindsight the first 2 games opponents mighta made us seem better than reality that bit hard tonight

Announcers said first time in 5 years that SCU has beaten a Pac-12 team on the road
Coach Haase says You’re welcome!

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - needle - 11-14-2023

Angel would have made some difference, but in reality Santa Clara dominated after the eight-minute time out. Disheartening to see Reynaud play poor defense when matched up one-on-one against the Santa Clara big man. Gealer has a great mentality, but...he can't be the guy to close out games if this team is serious about making the tournament.

Better team won, definitely.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Sam Leopold - 11-14-2023

Congrats Mick, it is clear that there will be plenty of chances to rag on my team throughout the season and so I'll save that for another day.  Your Broncos have to be established as a clear number three in the WCC behind the Zags and the Australians, since BYU has moved on out, and this year a visit from Weber State has made St. Mary's look doubtful.  Santa Clara is a program on the rise and it would be cool to see them play in the NCAA tournament.

Regarding Making the tournament, I think it’s 50/50 we make the Basketball classic tournament, or if we really wanna think crazy, the CBI!

Thanks, Sam...just got back with the game. Sat with a small SCU contingent right behind the bench.

Game went about as I thought...SCU dominated on boards, Stanford has better basketball players. Uncharacteristically, SCU dialed it back on the turnovers...they were averaging 16.5, "only" had 10. But SCU gets motivated for a Stanford game in a way that Stanford just doesn't....

I really like Stojakovic's game...he came out like a house on fire. Sweet shot. Reynaud and Spencer had too many turnovers, Bynum looked good when he did everything but shoot. Stanford shot 6 for 10 from three point range in the first half, but just 2/14 in the second half. Unfortunate. And Stanford had 12 turnovers, which I think is uncharacteristic for LSJU.

Stanford is a fun team to watch. Some excellent basketball talent there.

Attendance was listed at 2,649, I would have said 1,500.

Technically that's true. They've won all their home games against the Pac-12 in the last five years except one. They last beat Washington State in Spokane on 12/21/18. They didn't play any Pac 12 team on the road last year, and only one in 2021-22, loss to Cal. Later this year, SCU will play at Cal and will play WSU and Oregon at neutral sites in tournaments.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - MV72018 - 11-14-2023

So this was supposed to be the best team of Haase’s tenure, one that is experienced and has what we’ve lacked, a quality point guard. So what happens? We lose by a dozen to that basketball Leviathan, Santa Clara University! GIVE ME A BREAK! Looks like another season of underperforming by a Haase team is likely.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Sam Leopold - 11-14-2023

Well, it looks like whatever afflicted our team went hopping down the coast, as UC Irvine rides up the highway into South Central and chucks the #16 Trojans.  I guess even Andy Enfield comes up empty for answers every once in a while too?

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Langdude - 11-14-2023

Congrats, Mick! The better team won.

What do you think of Sendek? Seems that he gets a lot out of the players he has. 20-win seasons three out of the last four.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - GK3 - 11-15-2023

Can anyone tell me what kind of defense we were supposed to be playing?  SCU had so many open shots from every where I am not sure we were playing any kind of defense. We are constantly over helping leaving someone wide open from 3, or we just waive at the guy driving to the basket. Did we ever try a zone to maybe slow down the three point shooters some. Whatever defense we are playing, or trying to play isn't working.
Then the substitution of Argawal, Keefe, and Murrell at the same point when the team was feeling it offensively.  That was instant no offense. We never got our mojo back after that.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - washingtonismoney - 11-15-2023

Can we just fire this guy already? Ridiculous.

Thanks, Langdude. I like Herb Sendek, a lot. Great track record, made the postseason all three years at Miami (OH), 9 of 10 years at NC State, and six of nine years at ASU, although four of the six were the NIT. Then he didn't make the postseason his first four years at SCU, though he replaced a former UCLA assistant who was allowed to coach for NINE seasons and never finished better than fourth.

I think he's an okay X's and O's coach. I think time has passed him by a bit. I think he's a terrific recruiter -- much as I like my alma mater, they don't have a lot to offer recruits other than playing time. But the transfer market was tailor-made for a coach like Sendek, six of the seven players in his rotation last night were transfers. And now he can sell that he's had two first round NBA draft choices two years in a row. So he'll do well in the mercenary market. But until either he gets better at X's and O's or hires someone who's better at X's and O's, they will fall short of Gonzaga and St. Mary's and exit in the first round of the NIT or NCAAs. We'll see how well they do against either Alabama or Ohio State a week from Saturday. CBS is ranking SCU #31. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe they're a strong team.

Candidly, I think Stanford has better basketball players. I caught myself shaking my head at stupid or inadequate things that SCU players did about 3x as much as I had that reaction to Stanford players. I really like Stojakovic, Raynaud and Jones/#13. I do think Stanford would benefit from a change in coaches.

Is there any argument to let him continue coaching Stanford Basketball that can't easily be refuted?

Every Stanford MBB thread since 2017 can be distilled to this (correct) comment.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Sam Leopold - 11-15-2023

On top of last night's result in Maples, Brandin Podziemski went off for 23 points off the bench in Curry's absence, leading the Warriors in minutes, and came this close \\ to willing his team to a win.

The Santa Clara program probably picked up a good few thousand fans in the Bay Area overnight.

2017??  Oh, that's right, the year after we fired the coach who took us to the Sweet 16 [beating Kansas in the process] and two post-season NIT titles.  Smart move...  In the years since, of course, we've had amazing post-season success.  Oh, wait...

It's all Dawkins' fault.

Well, with Dawkins we deemed making the Big Dance once in eight years and having a 66-78 conference record during that time was unsat. Not a totally brainless move, at least IMO.
Of course, Hasse hasn't even done as well.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs. SCU - Farm93 - 11-15-2023

I saw the game (on TV) and thought this team has a decent amount of talent.

Then I imagined how they might be OK if they can learn to play together.....

And then, with Santa Clara's help, I remembered that under Haase in-game and in-season trends are usually negative.

The Stanford team that started the game should have won the game.
My great fear is that by February we will, once again, see the November level of play as the high water mark for a season.

These are all Haase's players and they are certainly better than many teams in the conference, on paper.   I guess we will see soon enough.

A few more thoughts...
I saw the e-mail blast highlighting $10 tickets.   Yikes!  Tickets were more than $10 when I was on campus in the early 90s.
With Stanford now bound for the ACC there should be more interest in the Stanford head coach position....should the team have an opening in the next year or two.
