Lengthy travel to the Southeast is a rather significant negative for the coach and his team.
However, coaching in the ACC remains a great option for coaches with ambition and should be a recruiting positive too.

I just wish this had happened 12 months ago.  Though looking across the USA many quality D1 programs have been able to convince their successful alums to come back to campus no matter what the level of compensation or success at their current program.

While I am thankful Muir finally has realized this needed to happen, that 12-48 month delay should be enough for us to see a similar message about his tenure IMO.

Lots of good names on the lists floating around.  What concerns me is that I don't think we are going to pay anywhere near what top coaches in the ACC make, at least not to start. Plus there is all the negative rumors going around about how hard it is to recruit to Stanford, the NIL and then the portal issues. I am not interested in hiring an up and coming young guy who turns things around and then leaves for the really big dollars elsewhere.
We have lost some good player to the portal, but it is hard to say how many left due to coaching issues and who might have stayed if the programming was winning and going to the dance. Haase has shown you can recruit talent to Stanford, but you need to do something with the talent once you get it.
The WSU coach is bound to be the target of some bigger programs, plus his body of work as a head coach is limited. I like the guy from Princeton. He wouldn't find Stanford's academic limitations on recruiting all that different, but he would move from the Ivy to the ACC.  If we can't get either Smith or Henderson, I would pick Alford.  I hated the guy when he was at UCLA and think he has a lot of baggage that maybe Stanford doesn't want to deal with, but he has a proven ability to win, plus I think he would like a chance to get back into the big leagues again.
I sincerely hope we don't drag this process out too long until there are no empty chairs.

RE: Haase fired - SkiBum80 - 03-15-2024

Not knowing yet who the new coach will be, I'm mentally and emotionally preparing for MBB in a similar way to what I did for FB.
The new coach will likely inherit a very decimated roster.
If the new coach can scramble quickly and piece together some semblance of a roster, it would still be nearly miraculous to do as well in their first season as the departed coach did in his last.
This is why it is so much credit to Coach TT in what he did in his first year to match the wins of the last year of Coach Shaw.
Would that MBB might do as well... I kind of doubt it.
But it is the looking forward to years 2,3, and beyond that is the bigger hope.

If Stanford is going cheap, here's a speculative list of candidates for the Fresno State job. From this list I could be talked into Joe Pasternack, head coach at UCSB. Pasternack has been an assistant at Cal and Arizona, and at UCSB he's taken the team to the NCAA tournament twice.

Question for those who follow college hoops outside Stanford more than I do: is there any precedent for firing a coach 10 minutes after a road game, before he's even gotten on the plane much less held the press conference?

I wanted Haase gone as much as anyone, but not waiting until today to do it feels unnecessarily mean in retrospect.  It's not like there was misconduct or something.

I would not be surprised if he was told before this tournament. His courtside interview after the first round miracle comeback was understated and matter-of-fact. I remarked that this doesn't seem like a coach excited for the next game. I wonder how the players were informed. Did Haase simply walk in after the game and inform the team that he had coached his last game at Stanford?

Well, about a week ago UW fired its head coach BEFORE he got on the plane to Vegas…

As bad as Muir has been, I’ve got to believe that Haase has already been told long before yesterday. Indeed, the timing of the announcement might very well have been a matter of mutual agreement, allowing him to make his eloquent remarks at the press conference, along with Angel and Jones there to make their tributes as well. Plus, it put an end to all of the media (and fan board) snarky comments sooner than later…

Jerod Haase's press conference after he was fired shows that he was an incredibly decent, sensitive, and caring human being.

I would be thrilled if this happened. In the last 70 or so years of Stanford basketball only one coach left Stanford after a winning season - Mike Montgomery.

Stanford men's basketball has a long tradition (in my lifetime at least) of mediocre to poor teams and results with one shining era of success in the late 90s/early 2000s. Otherwise this has been a perennial middle-to-lower-half of the conference program. I am hoping for someone, anyone who can inject life and create some interest and excitement around Stanford basketball.

I've thought this from the beginning.  He couldn't be as good a recruiter as he has been if he wasn't a good guy to be around.

BTW, here's the press conference if anyone hasn't seen it:

After watching, I say hire Haase as AD. He clearly loves Stanford, he cares about education, he's been around top sports programs as a player and a (assistant) coach. He probably wants to keep coaching, but he just seems like he'd be a good person to keep around the university.

RE: Haase fired - Vandelay - 03-15-2024

I have no confidence that Muir will hire the right coach.  None. Should have fired Haase and hired Madsen when he had the chance.

Trent Johnson? He quit during an NCAA game walking onto the floor to get his 2nd T. Ugh

Don’t disagree at all (with the Ugh), but his final season was 28-8 (or, I suppose, 27-8, if you want to give that DQ game - in Anaheim, IIRC - to Doug Oliver).

Johnson’s worse transgression in my mind, though, was saying (almost expressly, again IIRC) that he was leaving because he felt that you could lever recruit players at Stanford that were good enough to win it all.

There was general consensus that Muir made a good choice in hiring Haase. A successful coach with a pedigree of being part of successful programs. Someone who understood the Stanford environment and culture. Energetic and enthusiastic with the team and with the external community.

I believe that Muir is going to hire someone we will view as a good get under the circumstances.

The issue with Muir has been his hesitancy to act at the back end as results decline and fans become indifferent.

smh. Duh, yes of course, I missed Johnson.

But Stanford has no history of being a stepping stone program for young and successful coaches to move to higher profile gigs. I would be thrilled for a new coach to come in and do so well that he was hired by a higher profile program. I just want to enjoy some Stanford men's hoops success!

I agree, 100%.
I've been all for NIL for reasons of simple equity. But the amount of money that fans of major schools are willing to offer college kids is staggering Tom me. Many of you know I follow Kentucky, and have for seven decades, having been born there 77 years ago. This year, UK had two freshman who blossomed unexpectedly, Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham. (Sheppard did so well he is projected as the first pick in the NBA draft, which is ridiculous.) To my amazement, the rumor is that both Sheppard and Dillingham are going to be offered $3,000,000 each to return for their sophomore seasons. And Kentucky is not the leader in NIL exploitation, though it is about to become so. Calipari has plans.

There is no way a Stanford with its llimited and frankly more sophisticated fan base can compete with these numbers. The only solution is to junk amateurism altogether, and allow college kids to sign on with NBA  (and  NFL and MLB) franchises, without losing eligibility. There is no principled reason for the limitation.

That way, the Stanfords, Vanderbilts, and others with small fan bases. have a fighting chance. Professional franchise money dwarfs NIL, and suddenly playing time becomes important again. The 40 year decision becomes meaningful.

Interesting thought GR, and nice to hear from you.

RE: Haase fired - jacket3ree - 03-15-2024

This will be interesting, which is more than one can say about the past several years of Stanford Basketball. I don't have any names, just a few observations and a question.

Muir is supposedly a basketball guy. His Wikipedia page lists him as a "basketball player". You would think this is in his wheelhouse. He was AD at Georgetown (once as basketball school as there ever was; what the hell happened?) from 2005 - 2009. He inherited a team in some flux after the Craig Esherick era ended and John Thompson III was in his second year. They did OK during Muir's four or five years there, making three tournaments and a Final Four.  Muir left for Delaware and Thompson III stayed until being dumped in 2017 when Patrick Ewing took over a dumpster fire and proceeded to throw gasoline on it. From what I remember and see, it is hard to pin blame for Georgetown's demise on Muir. Hey they had three good tournament showings and a Final Four when he arrived compared to five straight seasons without an NCAA appearance right before he showed up. Haase was not a bad hire on paper. I think Muir will, as someone said earlier, fire someone good on paper. (NB: meant to say "hire", but will leave as is because I bet this happens all over again. He'll go for long-term stability and it will backfire. I'd take a blaze bright and leave stepping stone coach any day of the week.)

There are no home runs or slam dunks. Bill Walsh's return to the Stanford sideline was the home run hire of all time. To be fair, had we found out that Walsh wanted the job but Leland went in a different direction (he really should have hired Shaw), he would have been crucified no matter what Shaw did.  Bill Walsh was a .500 coach and drove the program into a ditch before stepping aside.

If I'm Muir, I have a short list already and my first two calls are to Jay Wright and Tony Bennett. Not with job offers, but for feedback. (And maybe they will pull a Walsh and ask for the job.) Jay Wright ran exactly the program Stanford wants. He's been broadcasting games. Who does he see out there that might be off the radar, or on the radar and Stanford needs to interview?  Tony Bennett moved from the Pac12 to ACC, very successfully.  What advice can he give?  Does he have a great assistant coach ready to run an ACC team?  Are you really thinking of retiring?

Stanford is probably looking for someone who won't chafe under the recruiting restrictions, is OK working where his players (professional or otherwise) are expected to go to school, can recruit nationally, and can get more out of the sum of the parts than others might, to be nationally competitive.  Should this be a west coast guy, an east coast guy, or does it matter?  Stanford recruits nationally, but are we selling ourselves as a west coast school forced to play in the ACC, or as an ACC team from exotic California?  Are we going to be grabbing more kids from say Hampton Roads with visions of a familiar conference, but with palm trees on campus?
