I'll bite, what other reason is there to have genders?

Agree 100%.

My comment was in reference to why we have males, with all of their traits, and females with all of theirs. One reason, other than reproduction, is division of labor for survival. But, this thread has drifted far from Stanford sports and should not be the forum for debating such issues.

I believe every transgender woman who has gone through puberty as a man, now has an inherent and irreversible sports advantage in size, stature, and strength over other women who did not get the advantage of male puberty. And fairness alone, along with safety in some sports, dictates that they should not be competing in women's sports because it is an uneven playing field. We had similar controversy way back in the day with East German women swimmers suddenly winning a lot, far more than ever before, as they were taking steroids and testosterone and other such chemicals to make themselves (unfairly) more like men. It was rightfully and eventually determined to be unfair and not allowed.

The outcome of the matches is irrelevant to the issues involved.
I'm not so sure it is. These issues aren't easy, but some of these situations strike me as implicating competitive fairness issues, while others just don't seem like they're as big of a deal. Lia Thomas certainly wasn't a safety issue, but on the more extreme end of a competitive fairness issue, and while I sympathized with all concerned in that situation, it didn't feel fundamentally fair to have Thomas--who had only recently transitioned and who was dominating competition and setting records--competing against cisgender women.
But from what I've been able to gather, this isn't the same situation. SJSU isn't going to win a national title. Their 4-3 conference Mountain West record is aided by three of those Ws being forfeits that almost certainly would've been losses otherwise. This player isn't going to the Olympics or anything. She started playing women's college volleyball four years ago and no one has said boo before. She played girls' high school and club volleyball all through high school and apparently no one said boo then either. She appears to have transitioned a long time ago. "Born male" is only one piece of the puzzle. When the transition occurred also matters. The degree of dominance of the individual player matters. And yeah, the physical profile of the individual player matters. Here, she's a tall, skinny woman who looks like a tall, skinny woman--the media reports seem to float the idea of some hulking behemoth who's out here injuring competitors left and right, but this ain't that.
I agree that player safety is important. But why is player safety a paramount concern this year for the University of Wyoming when it beat SJSU 3-0 and 3-1 last year with this player on SJSU's roster? Same question for Utah State, which beat SJSU 3-0 twice last year. Same question for Boise State, which beat SJSU 3-0 twice last year. The results of past matchups are indicative of the veracity of the stated justification for these cancellations. It seems demonstrably true that it was safe for these teams to play SJSU with this player last year. She didn't put on 50 pounds of muscle in the offseason. The only thing that appears to have changed is that now those teams know that she was born male. And that makes me question how much players' legitimate concerns for their own safety--or whether there is a reasonably objective safety issue--is really driving this particular discussion.
Again, player safety is fundamental. And players who feel unsafe need to be heard and respected. But precisely because issues about trans women competing against cis women are so complex and fraught, I try to take these situations on a case by case basis. And my instinct when I heard about this in the first place was that it was just not that big of a deal. And everything I've learned since has only reinforced that.
I think probabilistically. Just because somebody wasn't injured in previous matchups doesn't mean it couldn't have happened. Now we know the risk is there and should act accordingly.
Athletic competitions need to be governed by rules so I don't think case by case works here.

I appreciate that everyone has been respectful and arguments are well reasoned and have avoided personal or ad hominem attacks but let's not skirt the line here. I like you guys and our community and don't want to leave an opening for the divisiveness that may follow.

Having followed this all season it seemed all along there has to be an underlying tension on SJSU's team. The setter on the SJSU team joined in a lawsuit against the NCAA to remove the player in question from the team.
For the upcoming match against Nevada which probably will be a forfeit, here are two quotes from an article:
"It [Nevada players voting to forfeit] also brought praise from multiple players on San Jose State's team..."
"Round of applause to the girls of the (Nevada Wolf Pack) volleyball team," San Jose State women's volleyball player Brooke Slusser wrote on X."
I'm only commenting on how difficult and contentious this situation has become for the SJSU team. I'm not taking a position one way or the other. However, if anyone feels there is some political context to my post, PM me and I will delete it.

Quote:SJSU administration is caught between a rock and a hard place. They are beholden to the CA state government. There's probably a law or regulation requiring no discrimination against the trans community. So they can keep the guy on the WVB team. Sacramento will be happy, other teams on their schedule not so much. Or they can go against the law, regulation, or whatever and risk Gavin's revenge. Happy I'm well out of the CSU system.
This thread should be locked. Don't need this political crap here.

I have apologized in a PM and deleted my message. I urge dabigv13 to also delete his reply. Please vote on whether I should delete my original post (killing the entire thread).
