RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Boston College Sunday 2pm; preview and game thread - BostonCard - 02-16-2025

Free throw shooting down the stretch was pretty bad (Bosgana 0/2, but Clardy and Stevenson also missing 1/2), making what should have been a decently comfortable win into a nailbighter.  But Heal shuts the door by nailing both with a second left to make it a two possession game, and it ends 80-75.

All right now!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Boston College Sunday 2pm; preview and game thread - Hieronymus - 02-16-2025

- Brooke is definitely out of her shooting slump now, but a few too many turnovers.
- lots of wide open threes again.
- transition defense at the end of q1 was really bad - it got BC back into the game.
- not a good rebounding day - dead even vs. the worst rebounding team in the ACC.
- we finally got a favorable call at the end but
- Bad FT misses at the end for Bosgana. Her shot is too herky-jerky. It cracks under pressure at the line.

All right now.

Glad we didn't 'coug it.

No, but they are moving the ball better lately. Also, Mary Ashley is looking to score now. In the first half today she was very tentative and looking to pass. She had the lane wide open and still passed it out. In the second half she looked to score.

Heal and Deme3 are 8-13 from downtown, and the both have 21 points.

Is this a better team without Agara?

The call you refer to should have been against the player that ran into Heal from the backside, disrupting her before the other player could get there.

I quipped in the stands that the officials had a double-double today.  10 bad calls and 10 terrible calls.

We held their phenom down to 8 points today.  #30 was shooting 51% from three point range and we held her to 0/6.  The game plan worked.

Unfortunately, someone else for BC stepped up.  #2 Ivey is shooting barely 30% from three point range, and she went 6/7 from beyond the arc to keep Boston College in the game until the end.

Demetre not only broke out of her shooting slump, she had 5 blocks today.  The chalk talk warned us that BC puts 5 players on the floor who all drive to the basket, and keeping them out of the paint was a key to our defense.  Well, we gave up 28 points in the paint but Brooke's 5 blocks kept it from being much, much worse.  Those 5 blocks were more than the margin for our win.  If Demetre can keep her shot going like this for the rest of the year and continue to contribute on defense, then we have a shot to close out quite well.

I absolutely love Tess Heal.  The coaches think that when playing against highly athletic speedy little guards she has issues--it takes too long to get her shot up.  It is not a fast shot.  However, she always seems to me to play ferociously.  I love her aggression and her attitude on the court.  And the fact that she led us in points, including sinking shots when they really mattered--I'd give her the game ball along with Demetre.

I love Shay Ijiwoye's energy on defense, but just like Lepolo, we can't afford to have a player out there who isn't also an offensive threat.  Zero points today.  I'm sure she can bring along her offense in the same way Clardy did from freshman to sophomore years.  But for now, I wouldn't start her over Heal.

It is concerning that Agara couldn't really go.  I hope she is back at full steam for Thursday's game.  When she was on the floor she was not looking to drive, which is really what we need from her.  She overcame that hesitancy before, but it looks like her injury/time off may have re-instilled some of it.

MAS has the best rebounding hands on the team, I think.  I'd love to see that touch continue on the offensive end.  But something that some might not have notices--5 assists to 1 turnover for her.  A lot to like about her play today.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Boston College Sunday 2pm; preview and game thread - M T - 02-16-2025

One of the things I don't like about the use of basketball statistics is the use of "per game".

Agara will show this as a game played, but with zero points.  If stats were "per 40 minutes", you'd get a better sense of what a player actually contributes.
"per game" also fuels the "Look how much this player improved since last year" hype, since usually much of that improvement is due to minutes played.

One should acknowledge how well their Ivey shot.  I'm disappointed that even after hitting 3 of 4 3pt shots in 3 quarters, that she was able to get the ball and be open enough to hit 3 of 3 in Q4.

Stanford did well on offensive rebounds (36.7%) but did poorly on defensive rebounds (60%).  BC slightly out rebounded Stanford.
18 turnovers seems a lot, given BC's defense.  20 assists on 30 baskets is good.  BC only had 8 assists, which I think is a positive statement on Stanford's defense.  (As was the effect on Todd.)

There was a run where Stanford was able to get a lot of back cuts & such.  That was key.

I still see Stanford players standing around on defense or not getting close enough to an offensive player.  The first instinct when a shot goes up should be to look around for who to block out, and then to look up at the ball.  I remember one view showing one Stanford player taking a shot and Stevenson's head followed the path ion the ball, resulting in a defender getting the better rebounding position on her.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 Boston College 75 - Nobadeer - 02-16-2025

Demetre 21 pts 8 reb and the aforementioned 5 blocks, and only 3 fouls! One was highly dubious, looked like a clean block.

Clardy 9 pts 4 reb 4 ast 2 stls and it looked like at least a couple other deflections.

If I had read 81alum's pregame preview, I would've guessed right on the Tree-via question (McCall v. BC)!

Not such a good finish of the first quarter; BC ends on 15-5 run and it's 21-20.

BC

BC (our opponent) switched into what looked like an unusual 1-1-3 zone defense and we kept turning the ball over. Credit to coaches for eventually dialing up dribble drives, particularly by Elena, to break the dry spell. They tried a zone again later in the game and we responded better. But we gave up too many o-boards, which (along with the dubious reffing) allowed them to keep it close in the second half.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 Boston College 75 - Nobadeer - 02-16-2025

# 2 on BC was 6 of 7 on threes, her best game ever for BC. She's a career 28% shooter from three point range.

Her previous career high was 4 threes, once as a freshman and the other time in this year's season opener. Had she shot her usual 28%, she would've made 2 of 7, and LSJU probably would've won by double digits, maybe even by 15+.

yes, i was celebrating. i can't remember the last time a call that could have gone either way was called in our favor near the end of the game. of course the refs immediately gave bc a make-up call.

If you were watching on TV or from the east side of Maples, you probably didn't see that Tess's defender had her arm around Tess's neck. The ref, who couldn't notice it from his position, called a jump ball (which he wouldn't have been able to clearly see, either). Even the BC dad sitting next to me agreed it was a bad call.

The person I sit next to is a basketball official--although at the grade school and occasional high school level.  I routinely ask her what call she would have made when I see what I think are bad calls on the court, and she often corrects me and teaches me something about the rules.  However, she agreed that this crew was the worst we have seen all year.  We both noticed some truly atrocious calls that went OUR way, and other really bad calls that went the other way.  These officials seemed to distribute their incompetence "fairly" in both directions, but incompetence it was.

RE: WBB: Stanford 80 Boston College 75 - Nobadeer - 02-18-2025

The final ~ 30 seconds took an eternity, with 5 timeouts, 3 or 4 fouls, the interminable referee review of the fouls (were these rookie refs??), and the embarassing clock snafu with the Maples clock first being reset at 2 minutes 5 seconds, then 25 seconds and finally the correct 2.5 seconds remaining, but in period "OT-1".

It was almost 10 minutes of real time. If Bosgana had made any one of her last three shots, most of this would not have happened!

And she'll likely tell you that Tara used Shay's first charge in this game as one of the examples of officiating. Violet Palmer, ref emeritus, said that should have been a blocking foul.
