My limbic lobe is screaming at me "pick 6! look at the new coach enthusiasm!"
My prefrontal cortex replies back "you idiot, it's the players on the field that play the game, and we lost a lotta good ones"
So for now prefrontal won out and I went with 3.
But secretly hoping the limbic pulls an underdog win over the cortex.

(1) Coach Reich thinks the players made significant progress working on their own during the offseason.
(2) QB is an open competition between Elijah Brown (QB3 last season), Ben Gulbranson (QB2 at Oregon State the last two seasons) and Dylan Rizk (unsuccessful QB1 at UCF at the end of last season).
(3) Stanford's transfer class has 17(!) incoming student-athletes.
(4) Stanford's freshman class, which ranks 56th nationally, has a 4-star WR.
Overall, according to 247, Stanford has 35 incoming players total. Not that rankings are perfect, but there are only three 4-stars among that group. Overall, 247 ranks this group as 54th nationally.
Maybe the VIP article has more info that would instill confidence that 2025 will be better than 2024?
Rizk is unsuccessful? His stats look pretty good compared to the other two
Unsuccessful as in 1-4 as a starter and transferred to a 3-9 team. Daniels transferred to Auburn where he will probably be QB2. Rizk has a QB rating similar to Daniels--with admittedly fewer data points--but with the data we have I don't see an obvious overall improvement.
I'm just looking for data that show that Stanford will be improved in *any* position group. We have 17 incoming transfers, but I don't see the next Glyn Milburn in that group. On the other hand, I probably could have made the same argument when Jim Harbaugh took over for the 2007 season, and he improved the team from 1-11 to 4-8.

UCF does have five QBs on their roster (four transferred in at one time or another) so it seems that maybe he either was nudged out or didn't like where he thought he was on the depth chart, or maybe he realized that he could go to Stanford and that the Stanford degree was much better than a UCF degree.....
He as recruited by Northwestern, so he has to have something on the ball academically. He came in as a starter last four games of last season, crushed Arizona 56-12, lost a close one to ASU 31-35, lost by 10 to west VA, then by two TDs to Utah. UCF finished 4-8 but started 3-0. He's the best returning QB, my guess is they told him it'd be an open competition. Former Cardinal Scott Frost is the recently named head coach at UCF, and transfer Cam Fancher had 6 starts and transfer Tayven Jackson had the most talent upside, so...adios Rizk.

Hi Mick,
Good post.
A Bit of Context & Trivia: The Tayven Jackson you refer to, is the little brother of the Golden-State Warriors Trayce Jackson-Davis, who in turn is the son of the Indiana Pacers forward Dale Davis.

Bump. Last chance to make your prediction.
I predicted 2 wins this year. Hope I'm way under.

Went with 6 when Taylor was canned and Luck and Reich stepped in. Sticking with it. .. .

SEC has announced they are going to nine conferences games next year. Will the ACC follow suit?

I'm thinking my 4 win guess is now unrealistic (well unless we pull a 1999 season out of our hats)....

but if we get a few calls and lucky bounces, we could win 2 or 3........

Almost certainly a 4 win guess would have included Hawaii, so we are now down to 3.
In a fit of optimism I picked five. Now I'm down to a guess of 3.

Update: with such lousy QB play, 2 Ws and 10Ls.
How can Brown possibly be worse than Gulbranson?
From what I heard from Troy and John on the radio, Ben wasn't accurate, even when he completed a pass. Thew lots of balls too low or behind the intended receivers.

And Bear Bachmeier was so bad he had to transfer to BYU where he'll be starting when we play there in two weeks....

Stanford has one of the ten toughest schedules in the country. Our best shot at a victory and maybe the only game where we will get favored is Big Game because Kal is awful also and we get them at home. Winning Big Game would be a great turning point for the program.

0-1. There is no talent on this roster.

The roster is the roster. We could have won yesterday's game. Look at that defensive effort and that last touchdown drive. Certain coaches, on the other hand, showed nothing that gave me confidence in their ability to prepare young men to win games. Coaches can definitely lose the game for the team, and just look at the final Stanford possession for a shining example of how.

Incidentally, after the 3-8 1998 season, I predicted 8-3 in 1999 and nailed that season's 8-3 record when most folks, including a Mr. winded thought I was nuts and two wins were more likely. I did not, however, predict the Rose Bowl that in fact happened.
Feeling the same vibe this season...
Apparently, I'm an idiot. After a loss to the worst team on our schedule, I think we win 0 (zero) games this year. I think Reich was a mistake, and a Cal guy that I know says scuttlebutt is that Reich really, really doesn't want to be here. Stanford will drop football within five years.

well in 1999 we had a disappointing first game and then went 8-2 plus the Rose Bowl.....you gotta believe!!!!

Yeah, I think any of us that were somewhat optimistic about our chances this year got a reality check Friday.
I still think we will find a way to win a couple of games this year, but I will have to say 0-12 wouldn't shock me.
As far as Reich not wanting to be here I think he came as a favor to Luck. Now that he sees the realities of the situation I'm sure his enthusiasm has waned. At the same time I would be highly skeptical of what I heard from a Kal guy.

No I don't! The only way I will pretend to believe that the team will fare well this year is if I am offered a chunk of NIL money, a comfortable seat at the 50, and an ample supply of Red Ropes.
