Alexis Blokhina should be a senior on this team. Eleana Yu and Katherine Hui should be juniors. All of them are gone. Stanford has recruited what looks like a good class of frosh this year but they just replace a strong class of seniors (Ma, Xu, Yepifanova). Stanford has not really been successful in the transfer portal replacing the likes of Blokhina, Yu and Hui with comparable quality.

No Valerie Glozman today - and Alyssa Ahn only suiting up in the doubles.

A peek at our lineup - with Monika Ekstrand slotting in above Caroline Driscoll - so presumably, we'd see Driscoll play at the 4 this year if Ahn and Glozman are healthy.

It looks like we won the doubles point, followed by.....Driscoll and Wang winning fairly comfortably at 2 and 3. Ekstrand labored a bit, but won 7-5 6-4 on the first court.

Not really a lot that you can tell about our team from a game like this - we'll hopefully learn a bit more at the Cal Winter Invitational followed by the ITA Kickoff Weekend the next two weekends.

Neither Ahn nor Glozman played last weekend at the Cal Weekend Invitational. Stanford went 8-2 in singles in matches vs. Cal, Cal Poly and St. Marys. But the doubles teams were only 3-3.

Assuming that the severe weather didn't delay Stanford's trip to Norman, OK, the Cardinal open play in the ITA Kickoff tomorrow vs. Yale at 8 am pacific. Live stats will be available here - https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=629316&vislive=stan

Stanford wins 4-2 over Yale.

Playing without Valerie Glozman (unknown reason for absence), Stanford won the doubles point. A quick singles win by Ahn at #2 was just as quickly offset by straight set losses at 5 and 6 (Myoung and Sun). Driscoll (3) and Ekstrand (1) pulled out wins to clinch the match. Wang (4) was leading when the match ended.

It's definitely concerning that Glozman has been MIA - and I wonder why.

That said, weird to see that Emma Sun has moved back up above Morgan Shaffer after some challenging displays from Sun last year. There's no question that we're weaker on 5 and 6 than in years past without Glozman at the top of the lineup. It is also curious to see Ekstrand playing above Ahn - but perhaps there's a logical reason for that one. The good news is that Sun and Myoung won their doubles comfortably - so I wonder if they're going to be a solid doubles duo in a pinch like this one. We'll learn more when we line up against Oklahoma this weekend.

Shaffer withdrew from her match last weekend in Berkeley due to injury. If she is out and Glozman is MIA, Stanford only has 6 available players.

Without Glozman, Stanford lost today to Oklahoma 4-1. Only win was Ekstrand playing at #1. Stanford will not be advancing to play in the ITA Indoor Nationals.

India Houghton, who last played for the Cardinal as a senior in 2024, has just shown up at Florida. She is playing #3 singles.

There is also some discussion on a tennis bulletin board that Alexis Blokhina has re-enrolled at Stanford and would be eligible to play. Except that she is injured. I cannot find any corroborating evidence for that or for the report that Valerie Glozman is injured.

I would say Yes. But she is not listed on the tennis roster page.

Yes that is correct. Enrolled, re-joined team then got injured and is out for season.

As disappointing as the loss is... ultimately, with Glozman back (if that is the case), we have a chance to make a deep run. It will just be more difficult on our end, but not impossible. Of course though, it depends if Glozman is healthy (well, as long as our top 6 are healthy...).

If Blokhina is back (but injured), does that mean she might take a fifth year to play next year?

Stanford got swept at home by the LA schools, losing to #17 UCLA 7-0 yesterday.

The team now has a 3 week break before it starts ACC play. Sure hope that Glozman can return.

Edit to add - report is that Glozman's wrist is in a hard cast.

Here's how far the women's tennis team has fallen. Stanford came from behind to defeat Sacramento State today 4-3. With the score tied 3-3 and Monika Ekstrand down 4-2 in the third and final set, she reeled off the next 4 games to clinch the match.

Glozman is out until April (at least) according to reports. For whatever reason, Ahn played doubles but not singles. That meant that all of the remaining 6 players on the roster played singles including Emma Sun who lost in straight sets at 5 and Morgan Shaffer who lost in straight sets at 6. They are now a combined 2-6 in dual matches this year.

With Glozman and Ahn, I think Stanford could be a top 15-20 team. Right now, this does not even look like an NCAA tournament team.

Apart from Lele retiring, to what would we attribute this slide? Recruiting? Move to the ACC? NIL? There haven't been many transfers out and I had thought we were continuing to recruit "blue chip" recruits, so I'd be curious to hear whether there are parallels to WBB's decline or if it's due to something unique?

Not specifically women's tennis related, but I just wanted to observe that Stanford sports has been hit by a deluge of injuries that has really affected teams and their season results.

men's basketball - Chisom Okpara
women's basketball - Nunu Agara, Talana Lepolo plus Kennedy Umeh
women's tennis - Valerie Glozman, Alexis Blokhina
men's tennis - Samir Banerjee (playing but injured), Kyle Kang, Nico Godsick (playing doubles but not singles yet) - all returning from last year's national semifinalist team
wrestling - Hunter Garvin (returning All American), Lorenzo Norman (ranked as high as #4) - both out for the year

That's 5 sports losing their best player/leader. Each team has talented freshmen who have been asked to step up which they have done with varying success.

The top 6 for this team should be:
Valerie Glozman (sophomore)
Alexis Blokhina (senior)
Katherine Hui (junior)
Eleana Yu (junior)
plus 2 of the frosh (probably Ekstrand and Ahn)

This was the formula during the Forood years. Experienced players at the top. Talented frosh play at 5 and 6 then work their way up the lineup as their college careers advance.

But Glozman is injured. Blokhina left Stanford then returned but is injured. Hui was injured last year then turned pro. Yu transferred.

Stanford has replaced these players with freshmen (who are doing just fine, but cannot carry the team) and transfers from Denver U and Cal State Fullerton.

I would say that the decline has been a combination of bad luck and failure to fill the pipeline with equivalent veteran talent. Coaching? I don't know enough about college tennis to say how good Frankie Brennan is. But there certainly is a parallel to women's basketball. He was a long time assistant promoted to replace a legendary coach, probably without much of a search outside of the Stanford campus.

The problem with the Frankie Brennan analogy is that Lele Forood herself succeeded a legendary head coach (the elder Frank Brennan) who had won 10 NCAA championships in 21 years. She had been his assistant coach for 12 years when he retired and she became head coach. Admittedly, her career as head coach did not fully measure up to Frank Brennan's: she won 10 NCAA championships as head coach, too, but over 24 years instead of 21. ;) Or maybe the lesson of Frankie Brennan is that too much inbreeding eventually catches up to you? But seems like too small a sample size for him so far, and same for Kate?
