I think they are waiting for the stench of the losses to Seattle and UNLV (quad III and quad IV, respectively) to wear off.

Wow what a performance by Okorie. That kid is something else.

For the first time this season, a Stanford player has a Line o' the Night on kenpom, and naturally it's Okorie:
FanMatch (behind paywall)
Tar Heels defense has an..... er, Achilles' heel in that it doesn't force turnovers, and we took advantage. We were 16-28 from BOTH inside the arc AND outside.

Recorded the game and just finished watching.
ALL RIGHT NOW!
This really reminds me of the Brevin Knight days. Big time win tonight.

I thought the Louisville win was the best Maples game in years - and maybe it was, for all of ~ two weeks, until tonight!
Time zone effects, with the game ending near 11 pm Eastern time? UNC missed a bunch of FTs late and made some turnovers late. Reminded me a bit of the 4th quarter of the football win over Boston College last Sept.
And thanks to the missed Carolina FTs. we get free burgers at Shake Shack tomorrow!
And I want one of those Okorie t-shirts.
And kudos to Muir for hiring Kyle Smith!!

scorecard - 01-15-2026
The new math: New Hampshire Gatorade POY > Georgia GPOY + Wisconsin GPOY + Missouri GPOY + North Carolina GPOY
There's a certain confidence that a team gathers when you know you have the best player on the floor. Okorie imbues our team with belief that we can compete. Somewhat like Curry but in a totally different way, his gravity disrupts and breaks down defenses and our other players need to knock down the open shots when they are there, and we did that tonight. Enormous stretch of 3 balls hit by Dent-Smith to keep us hanging around in the 2nd half and eventually to give us the lead.
When was the last time we had the fastest AND quickest player on the floor on most nights? I'd venture to say never. Brevin was usually the quickest, but he didn't have the top end speed of Okorie nor the ability to finish inside. Okorie took it directly at Caleb Wilson for layups with either hand. His handle is amazing, particularly in traffic when he is probing and probing for openings. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope that he stays for another year.
I like that we have 4 guys at the end of the game that we can likely trust to shoot FT's: Gealer, Okorie, Dent-Smith, Agarwal. Bodes well for the end-game in most cases.
UNC does not appear to have the caliber of team that they usually have. Caleb Wilson looks like a legit NBA lottery pick (where they won't call his slippery pivot foot either). Veesaar looks Charmin soft (can't spell Veesaar without AVERSE to contact) and other than being a 7 footer with a decent touch, he's got no NBA future and probably none of his teammates other than Wilson do either. But it's still a thrilling victory and to beat UNC 2 years in a row is something I never would have expected.

Do we REALLY get free Shake Shack burgers? The offer says late game defined as last ten minutes. I think there were 14 minutes left when NC missed those free thtows

I only was able to watch the final two minutes+. My only add is that at the end Stanford had on the floor some true veterans/old guys (Agarwal, Rohosy, JDS and Camman, who is in his third year after redshirting as a frosh). I thought Wilson and North Carolina's inexperience really seemed a factor in their costly turnovers.

Not fully knowing the logic/algorithm of the net rankings, it seems to me that it will be almost impossible to meaningfully climb out of the hole dug by the 2 Quad 3 and Quad 4 loses.
The logic seems to suggest:
Loss vs Quad 1 + Win vs Quad 3/4 >> Win vs Quad 1 + Loss vs Quad 3/4
In fact, it seems to me that multiple wins against Quad 1 cannot meaningfully make up for those losses.
I'm of course biased, but that logic seems odd to me.

Interesting to see that starting with the Colorado game, we have had double digit turnovers only twice. That sure helps the chance of winniing. We also have really sucked only twice when shooting the three ball, ND and Va. We do have some shooters, but when they all take the night off we are in trouble, but then when we are on, we can really be on. Really happy for Argawal. He seems to finally have confidence again in his 3 ball and he still does all the little things he has always done. Seems that with Okorie's threat to take to the basket at all times, teams are not playing us as tight outside making it all the easier for Okorie to find the open man on his drives. We did have a terrible night with offensive rebounds, but it did't matter in the end and considering UNC's players, not really surprising.

Totally agree with Nobadeer, that was the best game in Maples in years! Great come from behind win and Okorie continues to be the X factor as the best Stanford freshman that I've ever seen. NC's defense was incredibly handsy and physical last night and I think Hubert Davis challenged them to stop Okorie from getting to the hoop at all costs. He is a relentless driver, that probes and then finds a seam to get to the basket with either hand and then finishes! The Tarheels were hip checking and holding him constantly. Not happy with the refs and that 4 point swing with the Technical was brutal. Did anyone see what Kyle said? I need to watch the recording?
Best shooting from 3 that I've seen in a long time with Dent-Smith, Agarwal and Benny hitting some fantastic shots and really hustling on D as well. Loved the tenacity.
Coach Kyle was not happy with the start to the second half and I haven't seen him so animated courtside. He let the players know it, especially the bigs. Great adjustments to try to get some tougher D in the paint and I think Aiden and Rohosy both stepped up their game...especially given Okpara's absence. That said, I don't understand why we don't go harder after rebounds on the offensive side? We have been getting out rebounded far too often and are missing some mid range boards as the bigs turn away to quickly.
Here's to the momentum building up to Saturday and another great performance versus the Blue Devils! Maples will be packed and I fear there is going to be too much Duke Blue in the stands so please bring your Cardinal Red and your vocals! I'm hopeful that our shooters build off of last night, but it's going to be a battle in the paint with Boozer...boards please!
By the way, anyone know our record vs Duke?! Let's Go Stanford!

2-2 all time:
https://goduke.com/sports/mens-basketball/opponent-history/stanford/400
We got 1-point wins in 1999 and 2000. Lost in 2014 (Coaches vs Cancer Classic championship game). And the blowout loss last year.

I think we're 2-2 vs. Duke all-time. Last season Stanford was 2-1 before the mid-Feb road loss.
Here's last year's pre-game note:
Quote:CAMERON CRAZIES
The Cardinal is 2-1 all-time against Duke, with all three battles coming in neutral site events. Stanford picked up one-point wins at the 1999 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Brooklyn and the 2000 Pete Newell Challenge in Oakland, the latter against a No. 1 ranked team after a last-second shot from Casey Jacobsen. The battle also marks a homecoming for Duke graduate Jaylen Blakes and Stanford graduate Neal Begovich, in his second season as a walk-on for the Blue Devils.

If UNLV moves into the top 160, they alleviate from a Quad 4 loss to a Quad 3.
At this moment they are #161.

I think it is reasonable to speculate that Stanford does not win this game with Okpara on the floor. The offensive efficiency was such a joy to watch without Okpara becoming a black hole with the ball. The spacing was better too. The matchups against the UNC bigs would not have been in Okpara's favor. Stanford was helped by UNC's mediocre defense, but you still have to make the shots. Stanford impressively shot 57% on 3s and 57% on 2s.
One of Okorie's underrated strengths is his strength. He does not have a skinny freshman body that needs to beef up. He is a strong player who has a great sense of how to use that strength on the drive and then to finish. I don't think we have had a player of any size who can finish around the rim like Okorie.
Defenses will continue to develop schemes to slow down or stop him. That will almost certainly involve multiple defenders. So Okorie's development challenge is to help his teammates take advantage of overplays by getting them the ball where they can score as he did last night.
Stanford only has 6 more home games this season, including this Saturday vs. Duke and next Saturday vs. Cal. That means 6 more chances to see Okorie at home. Get out to Maples if you can.
