RE: 2026 Men's Golf -

The golf course continued to challenge players today. But Stanford again rose to the challenge.
The Cardinal posted a team score of -10 today and takes a 16(!) shot lead into tomorrow's final stroke play round. Stanford was led by freshman Edan Cui who shot 67 and has a 2 stroke lead in the individual competition. Sophomore Jay Leng had a 68 and moved up to 3rd. Dean Greyserman would be right up at the top with them except for a stretch of 5 holes where he was +4. He was -4 for the other 13 holes.
Team
1. Stanford -23
2. Virginia -7
3. North Carolina -5
Individual
1. Cui -9
3. Leng -6
9. Wang -4
9. Greyserman -4
66. Stearns +8
Freshman Cooper Stearns has not contributed yet at all. His score has been dropped for both rounds. But the team will need him for the match play portion. I think we can say with a good deal of confidence that Stanford will finish in the top 8 and make match play.
Also of note, Stanford has dismissed sophomore TK Chantananuwat for "violating team rules." He had not played the last several tournaments which had me suspicious that something was going on. Stanford does not appear to miss him. However that does mean that only one player remains on the roster from last year's #1 recruiting class - Jay Leng. After last season, Logan Kim transferred to UCLA where he is not currently in their lineup.

I'm surprised Stearns is in the lineup. The other two remaining players on the roster, Gao and Arora, have better track records than Stearns.

None of us sees what happens during weekly qualifying. Tournament results factor in the coach's decision about who plays. But so do head-to-head results during qualifying. I presume that Stearns has defeated both Gao and Arora to earn his #5 spot. Gao is with the team in Florida as the alternate. Coach Ray has the option to sub him in tomorrow.
UPDATE - Coach Ray has in fact substituted Ethan Gao for Cooper Stearns for round 3. Gao will begin his round at 6 am pacific.

Birdies were tougher to come by today. But Stanford held serve. They maintained their 16 shot lead to win the stroke play part of the competition.
Stanford now proceeds to the match play portion tomorrow as the top seed. There are still a few teams on the course but it looks like the opponent will be Wake Forest or Duke.

Looks like Stanford takes on Duke in match play, Sunday morning, first tee time at 7:30 am CT/5:30 am PT.
I hope Stanford's hotel has early quiet hours.

As a result of a 2 hour lightning delay, Stanford and Florida State were not able to complete their match this evening. Florida State leads 2-1 with 2 matches still on the course. Play has been suspended because of darkness. Dean Greyserman leads his match 2 up with 3 to play. Big advantage Stanford.
But the final match with Edan Cui is all square with 2 to play. It will determine which team advances to the final. Cui and his opponent have really struggled at times. Only 4 of the 16 holes they have played have been halved. Cui was seriously leaking oil when he bogeyed 5 of 6 holes in one stretch. He was 1 down with 4 to play and looking in bad shape. But his opponent 3 putted 14 to lose, then missed a 3 footer for birdie on 15 to allow Cui to tie. The horn to suspend play came at a great time for both players.

Cui birdied 17 to go 1 up and managed to get a par for a halve at 18 to win the match.
Greyserman lost 17 to a birdie but still took a 1 up lead to 18 where he also got a halve with a par to win his match. Stanford defeated Florida State 3-2 and advances to the finals!
Stanford will play Virginia for the title, the #2 ranked team in the country. I am guessing that they will start around 8 am pacific today.
Pretty amazing performance by Stanford men's golf. They finished 13th out of 15 teams in the conference tournament last year. Their current senior leader Dean Greyserman did not play any matches his freshman or sophomore years. He only played 9 competitive rounds last year. He just kept working to improve his game and now we see the results.
Stanford has moved up to #15 in the country after the stroke play portion of the tournament. They are probably a solid #3 seed for regionals regardless of the outcome of the ACC finals.

Tough watching things fall apart. But ten times worse having to watch it on the worst golf broadcast with the worst golf broadcasters I’ve ever seen.

Virginia had a ton of experience. They have 2 seniors, a grad student, a junior and a frosh. They have qualified for the match play portion of NCAAs each of the last 3 years, including last year when they were the national runner-up. It would have been a tall order for Stanford to beat this team.
Now we await Stanford's seeding and regional assignment. I think the NCAA announces the regional field May 6, a week from Wednesday.

I saw it for a short while. It was tied at 2-2-1.
The Virginia golfer that was tied won 3 holes in a row, and it was game over. Didn't watch the end, but I'm supposing we lost 3-2.

Officially it was 3-1 with one match unfinished (Stanford led 1 up with 1 hole to play). Yeah, it was all square when the Virginia golfer hit Stanford with a birdie-birdie-eagle-par barrage to win 4 holes in a row.

The NCAA Golf Committee released the regional fields today. Stanford is off to Columbus, Ohio as the 3rd seed. It's a regional with a strong West Coast presence including 5 former P12 schools.
The regional mostly includes teams from the south and the west. They are going to have to adjust to unfamiliar conditions and grass. Regionals will be played May 18-20 (weather permitting). The top 5 teams advance to the NCAA tournament.
Teams (seed, overall ranking):
1(2) Florida
2 (11) Arizona State
3 (14) Stanford
4 (23) Long Beach State [Big West Conference]
5 (25) Florida State
6 (35) Utah
7 (38) South Carolina
8 (48) California
9 (52) South Florida
10 (61) Memphis
11 (64) Oregon
12 (128) Illinois State [Missouri Valley Conference]
13 (173) Wright State [Horizon League]
