After a mediocre campaign in 2025 in which Stanford barely reached .500 and did not advance to the NCAAs and a mediocre fall, the 2026 version of Stanford men's golf starts tournament play this week in Hawaii at the Amer Ari Invitational. Round 1 was today. 

The Cardinal is off to a strong start with scores of 64-65-65-67 for a total of 261 (-27) which may be a school record. It was good enough for 2nd place behind Auburn. Round 2 is tomorrow and Round 3 is Saturday.

Stanford finished behind the #5, 6, 7, and 16 teams but beat the #4, 11, 15, 17, and 26 teams. Placing high in a strong field like this helps the Cardinal get the ranking points they need to move up from the current #35 position.

Senior Nathan Wang led Stanford with an 8th place finish. Stanford only had 3 top 10 finishers all last year so more evidence that this year's team may be have some upside.

The drought is over as the Cardinal wins the weather impacted Prestige tournament in La Quinta. The afternoon wave in the first round was played in a steady rain, the second round afternoon wave was played in heavy winds, and today’s third round was cancelled due to very strong winds. All of the teams were impacted, with Stanford enduring the rain in the first round.

I happened to be close by and walked the back nine with the team in the second round when they were paired with players from Wake and Texas Tech. The Cardinal players looked very solid in comparison. Greyserman and TK finished tied for second in the individual standings.

BTW, every single one of the players acknowledged my wife and I in our Stanford hats. Coach Ray makes sure they appreciate their fans.

It was a birdie fest. Stanford's top 4 players totaled 23 birdies. Edan Cui, Dean Greyserman and Nathan Wang each had runs of 3 consecutive birdies. All of Stanford's top 4 are currently in the top 7 with Edan Cui and Dean Greyserman tied for the lead. 

With most of the field still on the golf course, Stanford has a 9 shot lead over 2nd and 11 shot lead over 3rd. Virginia, the 2nd ranked team in the country, is 16 shots behind. 

The ACC men's golf format is the same as that for the women. 54 holes of stroke play with the top 6 advancing to match play.

Yes, I see now that the men's and women's tournaments *are* different. In the women's tournament, the top 6 advance to match play. In the men's tournament, it's the top 8.

I'll add that I think the ACC tournament matters more for Stanford than for Virginia. Virginia is going to get a top seeding at regionals regardless of the ACC tournament results. I think the goal for Stanford is to be ranked high enough to be assigned to a regional out west (Corvallis or Tucson area) rather than go cross-country as they did last year (to Amherst, Virginia).

Yes, I see now that the men's and women's tournaments *are* different. In the women's tournament, the top 6 advance to match play. In the men's tournament, it's the top 8.

I believe that for ranking purposes the stroke play counts as one tournament and the match play counts as another tournament. So winning the stroke play portion would provide a good boost to Stanford’s ranking regardless of the outcome of match play.
