2026 Men's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 02-05-2026

After a mediocre campaign in 2025 in which Stanford barely reached .500 and did not advance to the NCAAs and a mediocre fall, the 2026 version of Stanford men's golf starts tournament play this week in Hawaii at the Amer Ari Invitational. Round 1 was today.

The Cardinal is off to a strong start with scores of 64-65-65-67 for a total of 261 (-27) which may be a school record. It was good enough for 2nd place behind Auburn. Round 2 is tomorrow and Round 3 is Saturday.

Stanford is still in the hunt after the 2nd round in Hawaii. Today's low scorer was sophomore Jay Leng with a 65. The Cardinal is in 2nd place, 3 shots back of Auburn.

Stanford has not won a tournament in nearly two years and barely contended in any tournaments last year. It's a big deal for this team to be in the hunt for a win.

The team fell back in round 3. Maybe a few loose shots or missed putts compared to prior days. It was enough to drop Stanford to 5th. But the total of 56 under par was the 2nd lowest team score in program history.

Stanford finished behind the #5, 6, 7, and 16 teams but beat the #4, 11, 15, 17, and 26 teams. Placing high in a strong field like this helps the Cardinal get the ranking points they need to move up from the current #35 position.

Senior Nathan Wang led Stanford with an 8th place finish. Stanford only had 3 top 10 finishers all last year so more evidence that this year's team may be have some upside.

Maverick McNealy shot a scintillating 63 at Pebble Beach today and is tied for 7th heading into tomorrow's final round. It got very windy late in the afternoon and tomorrow could be interesting weather as well.

The drought is over as the Cardinal wins the weather impacted Prestige tournament in La Quinta. The afternoon wave in the first round was played in a steady rain, the second round afternoon wave was played in heavy winds, and today’s third round was cancelled due to very strong winds. All of the teams were impacted, with Stanford enduring the rain in the first round.

I happened to be close by and walked the back nine with the team in the second round when they were paired with players from Wake and Texas Tech. The Cardinal players looked very solid in comparison. Greyserman and TK finished tied for second in the individual standings.

BTW, every single one of the players acknowledged my wife and I in our Stanford hats. Coach Ray makes sure they appreciate their fans.

It’s good to see these highly recruited players starting to reach their potential.

Players Championship Update: As the final round finishes Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young are tied for the lead at -13.

Thorbjornsen, Rogers, and McNealy all made a run up the leaderboard but have settled back as round four concludes. Thorbjornsen and Rogers are tied for 11th (at -7) and McNealy is tied for 32nd (at -2) with several holes to go for theThorbjornsen. There are several players still on the course but the Stanford alum standings are unlikely to change much other than TB . Still, not a bad result at <ahem> golf's fifth major. (and a lucrative one).

ADD: Thorbjornsen booked a +5 today to finish at -5 and tied for 22nd in a final round that included a quadruple bogey. Tough day at the office.

Stanford is on the fringe of the top 20 in the country which is amazing considering that no Stanford player is currently ranked in the top 90 in the country. It's been a true team effort.

They have 2 more tournaments before regionals. First up is the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo in 2 weeks. In years past, this tournament was broadcast on Golf Channel. Then ACCs in Florida.

Cranky Stanford alum Tom Watson wants Brooks Koepka, Patrick "Captain America" Reed, and other golfers who were lured by the LIV tour's riches to be permanently banned from returning to the PGA Tour.

He also wants you to keep off his lawn.

BTW, Reed is two back after the first round of the Masters. Maverick McNealy is the only Stanford alum in the Masters. He's at +4, T58.

The Stanford men just played their best round of the season in the 1st round of the ACC tournament.

It was a birdie fest. Stanford's top 4 players totaled 23 birdies. Edan Cui, Dean Greyserman and Nathan Wang each had runs of 3 consecutive birdies. All of Stanford's top 4 are currently in the top 7 with Edan Cui and Dean Greyserman tied for the lead.

With most of the field still on the golf course, Stanford has a 9 shot lead over 2nd and 11 shot lead over 3rd. Virginia, the 2nd ranked team in the country, is 16 shots behind.

The ACC men's golf format is the same as that for the women. 54 holes of stroke play with the top 6 advancing to match play.

Yes, I see now that the men's and women's tournaments *are* different. In the women's tournament, the top 6 advance to match play. In the men's tournament, it's the top 8.

I'll add that I think the ACC tournament matters more for Stanford than for Virginia. Virginia is going to get a top seeding at regionals regardless of the ACC tournament results. I think the goal for Stanford is to be ranked high enough to be assigned to a regional out west (Corvallis or Tucson area) rather than go cross-country as they did last year (to Amherst, Virginia).

Thanks for confirming, Spiny. So, based on how things stand today, Stanford's reward for dominating stroke play could be a match play quarterfinal vs Virginia (UVa is currently tied for 8th).

I believe that for ranking purposes the stroke play counts as one tournament and the match play counts as another tournament. So winning the stroke play portion would provide a good boost to Stanford’s ranking regardless of the outcome of match play.

If true, there's your answer for the National Championship as well.

Have a National Champion for Stroke Play [honoring the team that came out on top using the type of scoring that is overwhelmingly used all season long] and a National Champion for Match Play [honoring the team that came out on top in the format that TV really wants because it's more exciting]. If the same team wins both, that's great -- that team really did prove that it was the CHAMPION. If a different team wins Match Play -- as has happened rather frequently -- you've got two happy teams AND fodder for talking heads on the golf shows for at least a week as to which team is actually better [a BONUS for TV].

Win-Win ... literally.
