Quote:Authorities believe the head-on collision that seriously injured San Francisco 49ershead coach Kyle Shanahan occurred after a 21-year-old woman made an unsafe turn while driving a Mercedes SUV in the opposite direction on a four-lane street in Palo Alto, records show.

Shanahan was holding and using a cellphone at the time of the July 14 crash on Alma Street, which authorities listed as a factor in the accident, but he was not at fault for the wreck, according to the California Crash Reporting System, a statewide database of collisions.
...
The crash happened at 6:12 p.m. on July 14 at Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue, near downtown Palo Alto. The database said the woman was headed north on Alma, and Shanahan south on Alma.

Neither Shanahan nor the woman was found to have been drinking, according to the database. The airbags in the coach’s black 2023 Tesla Model S and the woman’s blue 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 each deployed, and both parties were wearing seatbelts.

Both parties sustained injuries in the crash, according to the database, though Palo Alto police told ESPN the woman was unhurt.

1. I'd guess that the woman driving north on Alma was making a left turn into the Hamilton St. CalTrain parking area. (It wouldn't seem problematic if she was driving north on Alma and made a right turn onto Hamilton going east.) Making a left into the CalTrain parking area at the Hamilton/Alma intersection can be quite dicey/risky, given that cars traveling south on the Alma at the University Ave overpass often accelerate on the downslope and approach the light at Hamilton and Alma quite rapidly. Also, trying to 'squeeze in' a left hand turn at that intersection into that parking area amidst cars traveling south could be risky. Maybe she was at risk of missing the next desired train.

2. Many scofflaws believe that it's only "other people" who shouldn't use their cellphones while driving. They make an exception for themselves, believing they are fully capable of safely driving with one hand while using their cell phones with the other. Wrong! That behavior is already worse than using one's cellphone while it is in a phone-holder and the other person's voice is coming through the car speakers. Attentiveness is a critical and fragile resource.

Shanahan says it’s his fault

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan met with local reporters to clarify that the July 14 accident was his fault. He said he took eyes off the road briefly to find his phone, which fell between seats and when he looked up he had gone over the line and into an SUV.  The CHP database had a clerical error attributing the accident to the other driver. Shanahan said that is not accurate.

A little more detail from The Athletic about the visor with garage opener slicing his eye. Never thought that would be a hazard…

I doubt it to, just trying to figure out how one driver is uninjured and the other has a broken nose, rids, hand, concussion and over forty stitches.  Only thing I can think of is being t-boned at an intersection but that would almost certainly have at least one driver cited for something...

Not necessarily.  Many years ago, I was making a right turn on an intersection in Los Angeles.  I had stopped for the red light, looked to my left for oncoming traffic, noticed a cop on the side of the road but no oncoming traffic, and started to make a right on the red light, only to belatedly see the “no right on red” sign.  Knowing that the cop was there, I slammed on the break and was rear-ended.  The cop came over and told me he was about to pull me over to give me a ticket for making an illegal right on a red, but, in light of the situation decided not to.  He also could have cited the woman who hit me, who was technically at fault, but chose not to.

Did he file a police report? First thing insurance claims adjuster is "was there a police report?"

Quote:The San Francisco 49ers placed Ricky Pearsall on season-ending injured reserve Saturday as the wide receiver continues to deal with a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee.

Niners general manager John Lynch said Pearsall will have surgery in the next couple of weeks. The timeline for his recovery is six to 12 months, with nine months the potential sweet spot for a return.

Along with Pearsall landing on injured reserve, the Niners announced the signing of wideout Deebo Samuel to a one-year deal. Samuel took Pearsall's spot on the roster.

Shanahan apparently had Tesla’s autopilot on when he crashed.

at the risk of turning this into a tesla debate and getting thread frozen, as a tesla driver for 4 years I find it improbable that while on autopilot the car would have crossed a painted line

The headlines on the news altered between him saying he had autopilot on and “may have been on” or “thought it was on”.

Tesla could confirm if it was "on", they are often quick to reveal if it was "off" following a newsworthy accident, of course Shanahan was not apparently "attentive and ready to take over"....

The Bay Area NBC channel news at 11 this morning indicated the initial charge included solicitation for prostitution (not "prostitution" itself) and that the "criminal tools" was his phone (which was apparently seized but will be returned).

He pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and was then found guilty by an administrative judge.  I think it was something like $1300 in fines or whatever.

The NFL is aware of the issue and will be reviewing it.

RE: 2026 49ers - fullmetal - 08-24-2026

He forfeited the $160 in cash he had on him, which was apparently seized by the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.  Sounds like a sting that caught much bigger fish than they were expecting...

RE: 2026 49ers - BostonCard - 08-24-2026

I have to ask what an NFL owner is doing soliciting a prostitute in a trailer park.

In addition to the fines he was sentenced to one day in jail for each of the counts, served concurrently (so, one day in jail).

RE: 2026 49ers - M T - 08-25-2026

Apparently the fee for services was $140 but reports indicated $161 in cash was forfeited.

Perhaps that’s because he tips 15%. ???

RE: 2026 49ers - fullmetal - 08-25-2026

I heard they seized $160.  Just a single $20 for the tip seems likely.  Just goes to show that you can have all the money in the world and still not be happy enough to live a clean life.
